  1. I'm just wondering - is this an STFM or an STF? All the STFMs and STEs I've seen have had the small eject button. Doesn't look to me from the picture that there's room for the 'M' on the label.

Would explain the inclusion of a monitor. The STF literally means ST with built-in Floppy drive. STFM is an ST with [F]loppy drive and [M]odulator, so it can be hooked up to a TV. The STFM is most commonly available without a monitor. Not always, of course, since people do prefer the sharper image a monitor will give you.

It's an STFM... I removed the original floppy drive and installed the HxC emulator.

I don't have an HxC, but if it is emulating an auto-booting game in drive A, there should be no way to do anything but load that game on reset. To avoid auto loading a game, put a different disk in drive A.

With the Atari ST, the only way to 'stop' a running commercial game was to reset the machine. Although some games (and demos viruses) hooked into the reset button, and you have to cycle the power to get rid of them.

PD games that you run from the desktop are more likely to have included a 'quit' feature, but with an auto-booting commercial game there is nothing to 'quit' to- the OS hasn't been initialized.

So far, the reset trick with holding down the emulator button and pressing the STFM's reset button is working... brings me right back to the manager screen.

Now if I can only figure out the sound issue. Some games have sound at startup, some don't.

  2. Ok... Figured out that the files needed to be converted to .hfe files.

New problem... when I do load a game, I don't know how to stop it... or go back to the emulator manager. So I turn of the unit. When I turn it back on, it plays the last game loaded instead of going straight to the emulator manager. Is there a way to turn off this feature?

  3. Can someone give me a "talk to me like I'm stupid" play by play on how to use the SLIM HXC floppy emulator???

This is for the Atari STFM... and this is where I'm at:

Loaded SD card with the "Floppy Emulator Manager" software and was able to get that to work. From there, I am lost. I don't know how bring up game files. I can select files into drive A or B, but from there... It only seems to allow me to reboot or save and reboot... but when I do it, it just reboots to the emulator manager screen. I wish I bought the one with the LCD screen and buttons. :(

Also, the game files I have are .st files, for example Outrun.st ... are these wrong?

  4. Yeah, already disassembled it. Everything is 5X5... I have to agree with stardust, Maybe back in the day when my fingers where smaller it worked better... or maybe I just didn't play any SMS games that required the precision needed. The Genesis controller did get it right. However, the buttons used to stick... at least with me they did. Looking back and even today when I play my Famicom with Everdrive, the controller is flawless.

  5. I just got a SMS controller off ebay to send out for a 7800 mod, now I don't think I will. It's strange because I remember playing the SMS years ago and the controller functioning perfectly... I don't know if it's because it's old and probably been sitting for a while, but the one I bought is terrible. The buttons work, but the D pad is whack. I press right, It goes right and down or up.... same with left. I just can't win. :( As much as I DONT want to get an NES controller, I think I may have to because those truly are the best I've used for a game system.

  6. You're better off getting an HxC floppy drive emulator (http://hxc2001.free.fr/floppy_drive_emulator/), you can buy them on eBay or through their store. If you get the slim version of the HxC and are happy to make your own mount for it then it's small enough for you to be able to take the floppy drive out of the ST and put the HxC in its place. Then you can load up an SD card with games and play them that way.

Nice, this is pretty much what I want... Isn't this what the Ultra Satan is too. This seems a bit less complicated though. Currently trying to find out if they are all the same, or if they are application specific.

  7. So I picked up the 520 STFM today. The monitor is in good shape but the adjustment knobs on the bottom for volume, brightness, etc. are seized. :( The CPU powers up to what appears to be some kind of desktop without a boot disk. The disk drive is totally shot so, I will definitely need an alternative... probably the UltraSatan. Most of the keys on the keyboard are yellowed, which kinda sucks but whatever.

EDIT: I was just reading up on the UltraSatan... and I'm afraid that thing and all it entails is way over my head. I'm just too stupid to figure all that stuff out. I see Best Electronics sells replacement floppy drives. Anyone ever get one of these?

  8. It's expensive. :)

Still, it is the best way to use a ST... Your 1040 may have TOS1.0 so you would have to open her up and replace that with Rainbow TOS 1.4 (04 .. something like that).

You would have to open and look as it probably needs the 6 chip TOS set, but it may have a two chip..

Reason for the upgrade is TOS 1.0 not playing nice with HDD devices, like SatanDisk/UltraSatan

Links above by Thibr is where to look to purchase an UltraSatan

Thanks for the info, but the one that I might be buying tomorrow is a 520 ST... not sure if its a STFM yet but at any rate, will the UltraSatan work ok with the 520 ST or STFM? Is it supposed to be an alternative to the floppy drive?

  9. Atari 2600 Connection has this Joystick about 3/4 down this page. Search "hexagon-shaped" to go right to it. Unfortunately they don't have any additional info on it.

It's strange that the picture on that webpage is the same one used in the ebay listing that I bought mine from. I bought mine with a Starfighter stick, here's the complete picture...

Could I have the only one in existence? :)

  10. Sorry to be a NOOB, but I might be buying this from someone... He has it listed as a "540",but I can't seem to find anything about it. I did a search for Atari 540 and the closest thing that came up was Atari 520. Anyone know what this is?

    Thanks

EDIT: Did some further research and it looks like it might be a 1040 ST. :)

  11. Here's some pics. It works perfectly with the 2600... both fire buttons DO NOT work with the 7800, but the stick does work. It is significantly thinner than the CX-10 in the pics. Honestly, the stick feels kinda flimsy and isn't entirely responsive but the fire buttons work pretty good. In terms of overall quality and construction, it's looks cheap and has knock-off written all over it. There are no ID or manufacturer stamps or stickers on it at all. I will eventually take it apart to see if any clues turn up.

  12. My first thought was that it is Photoshopped, because it even seems to say TOP like the normal Atari CX-40 sticks, and a third party stick wouldn't copy an original stick.

I am hoping it is made by Atari and is a rare prototype. I can't think of any other reasonable explanation.

Now that would suck! :) yup, it says "TOP" but around the circular part of the stick it has dots... I think the CX-40s have more of a dash going around the circular part.
