  1. I'm still waiting for it since the USPS is simply inept and has no idea how to route mail... Anyway, I was thinking since the two buttons are right next to each other, it would be a great candidate for a 7800 mod... assuming it isn't already a true 7800 compatible stick.

I'm very surprised nobody has ever seen this stick, makes me wonder if this is some kind of rare proto or something.

  2. Can some one tell me the atari 7800 anniversary date? I googled it and could not fine the date.

I read somewhere that the Atari 7800 was released on (IIRC) May 21, 1984... for it's test market I assume. So theoretically... the XM should be released on May 21, 2014 or soon after... but again, I might have the above date wrong. Oh wait... we are now in June. :)

  3. For those who use CRT's and are not using S video because they don't have the inputs for it, get a RF modulator from Radio Shack and hook it up to your coax on your CRT. Then plug into the S video on the RF modulator. It is much better than composite video. I can't comment if it improves the image on an LCD because I simply refuse to use those for vintage game systems.

  4. Not for nothing, and I get the whole, "Let's put things in perspective" jazz, but there are quite a few people who have invested a lot of their hard earned money into this project... and eventually he's going to have to deliver the goods. When other people's money is concerned, it's more than just a side hobby or passing fad.

  5. I personally think the Sega Master System gamepad would be a better candidate for a 7800 mod. Not only is it JUST 2 fire buttons (no start, select), but it's dark grey (almost black) and would only need a custom overlay that is more 7800 oriented. I know some people think the SMS controller sucks, but I don't recall ever having an issue with it back in the day.

  6. I put this thread in the 5200 section because this controller design is EXCLUSIVELY for the 5200... but can be used on other systems.

I made a sketch of a controller design that I would love to see created someday (if possible). I say if possible because I don't know if an Analog/Digital joystick combo even exists... or if it can be switchable from joystick mode to Trak Ball mode (5200). The design is heavily based on the 5200 Trak Ball casing design.

So to all you experts out there... based on all the features this design has, can it be done?

Would anyone buy such a controller, especially if it looks like something Atari could have released in 1982?

Another feature that I forgot to include is the ability for the Trak Ball to be used as the paddle controller for 2600 games.

And of course, it could be used as a DUAL STICK for games like Robotron 2084, Space Dungeon, etc.

  7. "The 7800 was more powerful than the NES and they were both designed during the same time."

I could be wrong, but the Famicom, which is essentially an NES... was released in Japan in 1983 correct? So, one could assume that the development for the system could have been in 1982. What was the time period in which the Atari 7800 was being developed?

  8.

You do have to give credit to the 7800 Joypads in one regard. That little stick is pretty much the granddaddy of the thumbsticks we have on the Xbox and PS controllers today.

I could be wrong, but I think Sega had it first with their Joypad.

  9. Just got the 7800 joypad today and I kinda like it, but I also wish it was more like the NES gamepad as far as responsiveness and precision. I don't really have too much of a problem with the way the buttons are spaced or how they feel when pressed, but I am rather disappointed in the quality of the D pad... it just doesn't respond well. The overall design of it is pretty cool and almost looks as if it were designed to be included with the XEGS, only in a grey with pastel buttons... it has the same styling cues.

  10. I just received the one I bought from Best Electronics today. It's much better than the proline IMO, but It is still a little awkward to use because of the placement of the buttons and the poor action of the D pad. I tried playing a few games with and without the thumb stick. The thumb stick would feel better if the D pad had some kind of clicking action to it. I find the D pad to be not very reliable with or with out the thumb stick. It works, but not that great.

I still think Atari simply should have made a CX-40 with a second fire button just below the main button. Even one on the topside or the bottom of the unit would have been cool... then include it with the 7800 instead of those prolines.

  11. It is reasonable to assume that even in an alternate universe... if Atari did all the things differently to insure the success of the 7800, then it would also have an effect on everything else... like the success' or failures of other video game companies. Isn't it presumptuous to assume that Nintendo and Sega would make the same decisions in an alternate universe?

"what if without those license restrictions and superb marketing."

I think it would also need better sound, whether implemented in every cart or in the system itself and a better controller, then the 7800 would be the dominating system.
