"What's more, ATARI’s slash and burn policy on the way out of this generation is turning everyone off. ATARI isn’t subsidizing retailers for their price drops. They aren’t offering to work with retailers to sell the stale shit that’s been cluttering up their walls."
Sounds familiar doesn't it? It sounds like Nintendo = Atari circa 1988.
1988? You mean like 1984-85? NES vs 2600? NES vs 7800? Which?
I meant what I said. Atari's 7800 was a flop, and Atari told the retailers, "Tough luck" just as Nintendo is doing today with GameCube. Atari pissed off retailers, thereby hurting future relations, and Nintendo is also pissing off retailers. That's going to hurt them in 2005-9 when the N5 comes out.
And yes, sales matter. That's why Atari/Sega no longer make consoles. They didn't have the sales. It appears Nintendo is going the same direction. Anyone who says "Sales don't matter" or "Relationships with retailers doesn't matter" should pull their head out of the sand.
re: Fanboy. I view Sony/Nintendo the same way I view WalMart/K-Mart. I don't really have any preference for either one. I go where the best experience is. 1975-84 that was Atari. 1985-89 it was Commodore. 1990-95 Nintendo. 1996-2004 Sony. 2005-9 it will likely be someone else.

And I thought FF10 had a lot of cutscenses, but I think Xenogears has it beat.
I just spent the last HOUR reading nothing but dialogue. An hour of reading! What is this? A book or a game? Where are the battles? 20 hours into the game, and I've seen a lot of anime, wandered randomly, and READ a lot of dialogue..... but only hit 2 dungeons and 3 bosses. Okay, that's a bit nuts.
So, this is Xenogears.
This is the game almost everyone raves about.
Why????? It's a movie, not a game.
ASIDE:
I almost forgot. What's the deal with the graphics? 3D worlds, 3D gears, and..... 2D sprites?!?!? Why on earth are all the characters made of sprites? As one reviewer writes: "the appearance of the characters is ATROCIOUS. They looked better on the SNES, for pete's sake!"
Yes, the sprite characters on FF6 looked better than the sprite characters in Xenogears. They should have made them fully 3D as was done with FF7.
BATTLE ENGINE:
The battle engine, what little I've seen of it, is very awesome. I wish the game had used less dialogue and more dungeons. (sigh) Oh well.
More review: "I can't for the life of me figure out why this is the supposedly best 'rpg' (I refuse to call it a role playing game) from Square. That can't be further from the truth, Xenogears is the worst 'rpg' I ever 'played'. In fact I didn't do much playing but I did a lot of watching endless cut-scene after cut-scene, talking after talking."

The odd thing is, a lot of Japanese television (especially anime) is FAR more raunchy than what gets shown in the US. Are they always blushing at home in front of the tube too?The Japanese separate their public & private lives. They can go home and watch extremely pornographic movies or even adult comics on the subway..... but do they TALK about it? Absolutely, positive NOT.
We in America have a similar taboo. I can have sex with my wife last night, but I can't go to work and talk about it. If I did, I'd be ostracized. The Japanese are the same, but their taboo extends to other areas like money, personal emotions, and (apparently) their parents' jobs.
Not discussing your money or emotions or your family may sound strange to us "open/honest Americans" but it's normal for the Japanese.

SUGGESTION:
Re-read the article but replace Nintendo=Atari and Microsoft=Nintendo. Example:
"NINTENDO, a supposed first timer and underdog in this generation of consoles kicked ATARI in their pompous ass in North America because they floated a full, viable line up of their own. Even if the games aren't comparable to better product, NINTENDO showed the third party developers that they are seriously committed. Then they went out and did their best to bribe other publishers like EA, Square and Konami to jump aboard as well."
"What's more, ATARI’s slash and burn policy on the way out of this generation is turning everyone off. ATARI isn’t subsidizing retailers for their price drops. They aren’t offering to work with retailers to sell the stale shit that’s been cluttering up their walls."

Are sports games that unsupported on GC? I don't care (except in the larger sense of maybe it's hurting Nintendo) but I haven't see it as that far behind its competitors in terms of having ports of the big name games.I still don't think N64's carts choice was that bad of a move. If we missed out on a PSX rush of shovelware, well cry me a river.
The problem with your comment is the word "I". For a company trying to maximize profits, the needs of the many far outweigh the needs of the few. Or the one.
- What "I" want does not matter.
- What "we the masses" want is what matters for profits and stockholders.
re: N64
Using a cart was a mistake because it did not leave room for tons of varied textures and pre-recorded videos. "We the masses" wanted that stuff, and the N64 didn't have room to do it. PS1 did, so it succeeded. (PS1 also could handle games that were impossible on N64... like the hugely successful Dance Dance Revolution. DDR is nearly impossible on a cart.).

I just tackled this game for the first time today. I admit at first I thought, "This game looks lame," but boy was I wrong! The sound is almost non-existent, but that's okay because the artistry of the graphics rivals the beauty of Ico!
And the idea of beating enemies... not through stomping on them (Mario) or slashing them (Link)... but by *out-smarting* them is a satisfying change of pace.
Modern gaming comapnies definitely need to make more 2D platformers like this one (and Metroid Fusion). I'm sick of the 3D crap.
.
ASIDE: I'm almost at the end of the game (the Tombs), but I'm still on disc 1. So, what's on disc 2??? Is it like FF7 where the final disc is mostly just pre-recorded movie?

BACK ON TOPIC:
My point was that Mario 64's camera was near-perfect back in 1996. Given that such camera movement was perfected way back in 1996, why would programmers have a difficult time with cameras in 2003??? None that I can think of except pure ineptitude.
-
Dear Anal Retentives:
I said Mario 64 was ONE...... repeat...ONE... of the first 3D games. I did not say it was "the" first.
(You may now remove the executive branch from your anus.)
-
and that "they dont talk" thing is total BS. If you are on good standings with a japanese person they will talk to you more than an american ever will..Well all I know is that I asked my friend Yuki, "So what do you parents do for work?" and she got all offended. She said it's none of my business, and she's deeply insulted.
(shrug)
Then again, maybe Yuki's not a typical Japanese.
-
Mario 64* was one of the FIRST 3D games. If Nintendo could "get it right" back in 1996, why can't companies get it right today? Sheer ineptitude IMHO.
If the company is too dumb to program a decent camera, than just make it a fixed camera (like Pac-Man World) or with a pre-programmed route (like Final Fantasy 10)
* One of my favorite scenes in Mario 64 is when you walk into the room of mirrors, and you can see the camera guy floating on his little cloud! Nice attention to detail Nintendo!

Japanese & American culture is so incompatible, it's not even funny. We'd have a civil war. Here's why:
- In Japan, citizens rely on government to support them. Tax rates = 70%. (In comparison America is only 40%). The Japanese would flip out at the thought of having to support themselves instead of getting free room & board & healthcare from the government.
- In America, we say whatever we think. We're a very talkative culture. In Japan, most things are kept silent. Where you work, where you live, how you spend your free time... you can not ask these questions because you'll insult your Japanese colleaques.
- In America, women are essentially equal to men. Sure we're not perfect yet, but for all practical purposes a woman can do whatever a man can do. In Japan, women are still considered subservient to men. What the husband says is final. What the woman thinks is considered, but the man makes the final decision. A Japanese woman going into business or science or engineering is ludicrous.
The idea of dropping Japan in the middle of America (or the Great Lakes) is a fun idea, but the resulting cultural clash would create total chaos.

The flaw with the Gamecube version is the large green button in the middle of 3 smaller buttons. It just feels "wrong" to me. Non-symmetrical. While playing, I kept pushing the wrong button at the wrong time.
The tiny D-pad worked just fine. I've heard complaints, but it didn't bother me at all.
I don't give a damn about Link. After the boredom of Wind Waker, I hope I never seen him again.
-
The Cube version was the one that sold best. It makes no sense to ignore it.
-
Well, you do have a good point.I am trying to pinpoint the moment when Atari first went astray and, well... it just goes back and back and back. I am having a crisis right now... I am suddenly realizing this company I have loved all my life was nothing but a mismanaged dungheap from the very beginning!

Atari was good when Nolan Bushnell owned it in the 1970's. Atari went to crap around 1980 when they suddenly became rich..... it was as though they couldn't handle their own success (like people winning the lottery and then going bankrupt 5 years later).
.
Info-grames probably derives their name from tele-grames. Tele-grames were messages transmitted over a distance. Info-grames are the same thing, but designed to by informative/educational. (Yes, I do think games are educational. They teach logical & critical thinking skills.)
-
The Cube... the Box... the Playstation... they all felt the same to me. Just rearranged buttons. (I find the Cube's non-symmetrical analog control to be annoying, because I play lots of flying sims, and having left/right joysticks in line is absolutely essential.) But otherwise, all 3 controllers "feel" the same to me.
The only controller I didn't like was the Dreamcast. It's too large for my small hands.
I wonder what you guys would think of radio control airplane controls? They are box-shaped and not the least bit comfortable. Worst Controller Ever.

Nintendo 64:
- Mario 64 (fun little games and challenging running/jumping platforming)
- Zelda: Ocarina of Time (my favorite part is the boss fights! Hard!)
- Banjo-Kazooie (this is superior to M64 because of the humor and "attitude" of the characters... a classic)
- Turok 2 (I love watching the reptiles twitch and bounce around after I shoot them

- Goldeneye (I like Bond)

Well, the Cube games didn't impress this 2600 lover very much. Here's what I *did* enjoy:
- Eternal Darkness (great story that will give you nightmares!)
- Metroid Prime (makes you feel that you're actually exploring an alien planet!)
- Super Monkey Ball (Marble Madness in 3D!)
- Soul Calibur 2 (do I really need to explain?)
Well that's about it. I did not enjoy the Cube games very much. The sequels were not very good IMHO. Mario sunshine was boring. Mario 64 was fun. Wind Waker was boring. Ocarina of Time was challenging. And so on. Nintendo screwed up the classics by forgetting to make them FUN (a terrible sin).
-
Nah, but see I DO want to experience the modern games... just the kinds of modern games that would appeal to a twitchy 2600 lover like me.Well, the Cube games didn't impress this 2600 lover very much. Here's what I *did* enjoy:
- Eternal Darkness (great story that will give you nightmares!)
- Metroid Prime (makes you feel that you're actually exploring an alien planet!)
- Super Monkey Ball (Marble Madness in 3D!)
- Ikaruga (a shooter)
- Soul Calibur 2 (do I really need to explain?)
Well that's about it. I did not enjoy the Cube games very much. The sequels were not very good IMHO. Mario sunshine was boring. Mario 64 was fun. Wind Waker was boring. Ocarina of Time was challenging and fun to explore. And so on. Nintendo screwed up the classics by forgetting to make them FUN (a terrible sin).
.
ASIDE: Why do the classic arcade collections only include 5-6 games? Why not put 100 per disk and make them worth purchasing?

search it.. i had a long article on how the dreamcast is more powerful but i dont have time to look for it again
Is that the same article that claimed "Ecco the Dolphin could never be ported to the PS2" because the game is too advanced to PS2 hardware?!?!? Funny, my copy of Ecco runs on the PS2 just great.
Anyway, when I look at Gran Turismo 3 & Kingdom Hearts, it's obvious to me that the PS2 is more advanced. It's graphics are just smoother thanks to more polygons pushed.
-
If the Sony handheld is $300, it doesn't stand a chance. It would have to some special electro-sex orgasm attachment for it to sell for that much and be popular.Rez - Trance Vibrator maybe?
(ducking and running)
BTW, wasn't Montgomery Ward nearly 100 years old? They went out of business. In fact, many old companies go out of business. Just because Nintendo is 100+ years old does not mean anything.
Right now, I'd say both the Cube & the Box are in bad shape (like Sega Master System & Atari 7800). They are both getting crushed by the Playstation (Nintendo ES).
-
FF7 is a finicky game. If you turn on the "fast load" option, it will eventually corrupt the graphics and become unplayable.
As for other PS1 games, I think they look great. Turn on "smooth polygons" while playing Soul Blade/Edge, and the characters look almost as good as Soul Calibur! Ditto other games. I can't imagine going back to a PSone after seeing the PS2's new smoothing function.

Just stop and THINK for a second, and you'll know the answer.
--- To emulate an N64 at 100% speed, you need at least 1000 MHz PC. The N64 is only running at ~75 MHz.
--- The GameCube runs at 450 MHz. So you'd need a PC that runs at least 5000 MHz for proper emulation... probably more.
--- So, given that thought analysis, how the hell would a ~750 MHz Celeron Xbox emulate GC games? No. Way. Ever.

My point is merely that what was Infogrames is now Atari ONLY because they bought the rights to the name. There is NO real connection to the Atari of old...Thank God.
The Atari corporation was a mismanaged mess that deserved to go bankrupt. I think Infogrames is a better company than the actual Atari was from 1980-95. Maybe Infogrames can recover the reputation that Atari so stupidly destroyed.

"Atari today confirmed it would not publish Terminator 3 and Driver 3 for the Nintendo GameCube"
I think that's a wise decision. If I was a developer I'd concentrate ALL my effort on just two systems: The PS2 and the Gameboy Advance. I'd ignore the #2 & #3 consoles. That way I'd reach the biggest audience possible for the smallest expense. Like Squaresoft has/is doing.

My buddy told him to return everything, PayPal'd him for the shipping costs and told him he would either refund all the money or fix the computer or send him another one.As I see it, your friend only lost one thing:
(1) Shipping the dead computer back to himself.
That's not bad. He sold a like-new Amiga and got paid his money. So he made out okay. Why is he worried?
.
If I was him, I'd just shrug my shoulders, and then sell the dead Amiga on ebay as a "broken - for parts only" machine.
As for negative feedback, if the bidder leaves negative feedback to me, then I do the same to him. It hurts the bidder (1) more than it does me (300+).
Basically, your friend just needs to calm down and forget the whole incident. Chalk it up as a learning experience.

Let's see... the Cube controls about 15%* of the market & 7800 had about 10%** so they are very close in percentages. The Cube is "near" being a flop like the 7800.
*(15 / 90 million)
