Unfortunately, it turned out on to match (or in some cases, fall short of)the Amiga.I remember when some die-hard developers were unhappy with the specs and voiced their opinion about it, Atari actually threatened to pull their developer's units because of that! Typical Tramiel stupidity again...(can't take criticism).
If I remember correctly, it also has a Motorola DSP chip in it.

Though I think my initial effort will be using the cuttle cart's extra RAM space to see if I can do a better translation of an old old game. Which of course, means, it won't be sold, except maybe on cds for all the owners of the thing, and that would be rather inexpensive, and simple to do, and collectable
I really don't understand this paranoia about EPROMS. I have 30+ Arcade Games (23 Cabinets), 99% of them use EPROMS. Most are 15 - 20 years old. How many bad EPROMS have I seen? ONE.
I have an Atari 2600 Cart (Mountain King)that is a ROM and its dead. So as far as I can tell, they are about equal as far as reliablity.

I've seen it done (on paper at least), but it's very difficult to make anything more than a simple Pong game (even that is a challenge). So what do you get for winning this contest? Err... Umm... I'm sure I can come up with something interesting from my trade bin, maybe someone can help with that. Anyway, we still need an impartial judge for this contest. Any ideas? I would offer to judge it, but I want to try this myself.Al or Alex, if you want to make this an offical Atari Age contest feel free. I just thought it was a cool idea.Tempest
I looked at the Manual for the BASIC and it seems VERY limited. Is there a better reference or is the language really that limited?
Can I get input from a Joystick?

Ok,
This has to be the funniest/sickest video game idea I've seen in a while. I really don't think it will catch on here in the US. Not sure why not, as I really can't put my finger on it.

Originally posted by StanJr:This recent flood of manual scans has me taking notice of something: the life of the atari manual is rather curious.Early Atari manuals are very well put together, color pics, detailed instructions, several pages, the works. The early Silver Label manuals are even better, glossy paper, many pages, color pics, super-detailed instuctions, scoring charts, enemy/item lists, stories, info, etc. Then everything takes a turn for the worse and the manual quality slides downhill fast.Later silver label manuals are sparse, with few pics in black and white, minimal instructions, and few frills. The Red label instructions were almost an after-thought. These instruction pamphlets contain one maybe two pics, usually in red ink, instructions that say "plug in, push the reset button, good luck," and not much else. The manuals are sometimes as neat as the game. Its disappointing to compare the manual for ET and the manual for Gravitar and see the lapse in quality.
These games had instructions?

Well, I was going to list them all, but I figured it would just be easier to provide a link :-)

However, for the record. Donkey Kong is my Favorite, and my least is Mortal Kombat.

Or "You need 137 carts to finish this collection" Going off of the master lists of course. Well, you can open your cartridge file and the Master Cart List for that platform and do a Comparision. That should give you a list of what is missing.
Your Cart Counts should also be in the lower right corner of the window. The number on the left is the Qty count, and the number on the right is the number of Rows in the list. If you don't do label variations then it will be equal to the number of unique carts you have.

Yes.
Step 1: Go to Options->Manufacturers
Step 2: Choose the platform you want to add the Mfg for.
Step 3: Type in the name of the Manufacturer.
Step 4: Click "ADD" (or press Ctrl-A)
Thats it. You should now have a Mfg for that platform.
Exit out of Options and you should be able to select it.

Ok,
I am looking for feedback on what you want for Hardware tracking. Do you just want to know that you have 2 2600's, a Jr, NES, etc... or do you want to know a lot more detail. If you want a lot more detail, tell me how much you want.
Would this work:
Atari 2600, 6 Switch - Black
Atari 2600, 4 Switch - Woodgrain
Atari 5200, 2 Port
Atari 5200, 4 Port
etc...
Do you care about Model Numbers, Serial Numbers, Manufactures?
For the controlers, will the Names of them be enough or do you want more such as Model #'s, etc..??
Examples:
Atari Joystick
Epyx Joysick
Wico Joystick
Atari Paddles
Coleco Driving Controler
What types of harware do you want to track?
Consoles
Controlers
Accessories
I am working on it right now so if you want to be heard, now is the time.
Thanks,

I've been thinking this over and I think this would be better suited as a comment. Very few if any collect "Dead Carts". I have a couple, but I just make the note "Dead".
Unless there is a LOT of demand for that, I'm not going to add it because it will take time away from other features that I want to add.

I would like to count the total different games, and the total cartridges I have. Currently it's hard to enter the same game, with small differences. But then again. I like the idea of Cart Commander !
I am working on a Copy & Paste function. This should make things a bit easier.
Copy and Paste a Row, then edit the new row and change what you want about it.

I'm interested. I would like to see a board that could also be used as a Mutli-Game board.
Here is a link to making a Multi-Cart out of an old Activision Cart:
http://members.home.com/rcolbert1/multi.htm
A design based off this should also allow for single game EPROM's as well. They would leave out the dipswitch and just solder one of the pins as if the dipswitch was set.
Hell, I'd pay $2 a cart for those :-)
Since I have my own EPROM burner, I would prefer EPROM over ROM.

With a set of Atari Paddles :-). No Paddle, no Kaboom!. Kaboom! is my favorite Activision game, and I would not buy it if it didn't support TRUE ANALOG paddles.
Stampede or Barnstorming would be a cool port for the GBA too.

Originally posted by Sylentwulf:An easier printing system if possible. The only way I've seen to print is through excel (am I right?) and it comes out 2 pages wide and pretty ugly. Maybe split the master lists/lists into homebrew, cart variations sections.
The current Reports are generated as HTML and can be printed from within a browser. It also makes it easy to post on the web.
Reports can be a pain in the ass, and boring :-) Reports go WAY down on the list unless its something that has to be calculated (like the Trade Reports, etc..)
If you want basic stuff like By MFG, etc... then just import that stuff into EXCEL or Access and use them as they have very nice report generators.
Let me know what kind of reports you are looking for, or if you just want a better way to print the existing ones and I'll take it into consideration.

Originally posted by ubersaurus:Well, like I'm in the process of attempting, you could do more modern systems, notably SNES and the like, and I also would like some parts on older systems not listed yet, like Channel F, Studio 2 and whatnot. Not all in one update, nessecarily, but you know, whatever. You could add in Game Gear too, it is kind of like the Master System.
Are you refering to Master Lists or something else?

Ok,
I'm getting ready to start working on Cart Commander again. Probably start this week.
If you have anything you want to see in it, please drop me an email now!

I found that registration of the program is done by sending in some video games to the author, has anyone else registered the software?I am now in the process of registration, but I am just curious who uses/registered the software? What did you use to register? I noticed the author will only accept Atari 2600 games with a rariety of 3 or higher.
Actually, the 3 or Higher is if you want to send me a DUPE of what I already have. If its a 1 or 2 and I don't have it, I'll take it, otherwise chances are I already have many dupes of those.

Also does registering do anything besides what it already does, extra functions or options added? In other words what is the point of registering besides making the author want to release future versions of the software?Junie
I didn't outline any bennefits in the documentation, but I have decided that anyone who has "registered" (i.e. sent me a cart or two) will get the latest version before its made public. I'm thinking in the neighborhood of 2 weeks to a month before its public.
The "Registration" is also for the life of the software.
I hope to start working on the next version here soon, probably next week. If anyone has a wish, put it in now and I'll see what I can do.
As for how often new versions come out, that will depend on how much time I have, how many features I want to add and what the demand is.
I don't know if Hardware tracking will be in this next release or not, but its high on the list. I have to sit down and design it and determine the best way to intergrate it.

I think I'm going to add a feature to Cart Commander to generate a report for this in the next version because doing this manually sucks :-)
Atari 2600 - 471
Atari 5200 - 33
Atari 800 - 11
C64 - 16
Colleco - 21
Intellivision - 55
Jaguar - 5
Lynx - 42
NES - 19
SEGA Gen. - 2
O2 - 4
-------------------------
Total 679
Its not 100% up to date, and includes dupes, etc...

(Why can't I remember that I already have a few copies of that game??? Same with Dig Dug). Keep up the great work on CC
All the Cart Files are standard CSV (Comma Seperated Values) files. You can import these files into almost any spread sheet or database program.
If you use the Export feature, you can just export the fields you want as well.

Cart Commander vs. Excel
in Atari 2600
Posted
I say Dump Excel, but then I'm biased :-)
I'll add this to the TO-DO list for the next release.
I'll add this to the TO-DO List as well. Add a field for "Obtained From" and another Graph of COST vs. VALUE.
Yes, this option was there for things like the Keypad, Light Guns, Steering Wheel, etc.. Something that typically didn't come with the console itself. The intent was to let you know that the game REQUIRED a special controller, not that you necessarily owned it.
Noted. Guess I should have listened to Albert when he was nagging me to put a button on that dialog linking to the options!
The original intent of CC was to track cartridges. I am designing the Hardware tracking aspect of it now. If all goes as planned, Hardware tracking will be in the next release.
Noted and put on the TO-DO List for the next release.
I don't think so. I could have a stack of carts that are dupes that are all the same condition. If you have 5 carts of differing condition, then they should be tracked individually as seperate rows. VIC-20 Also has Text/Picture variations.
Although Atari was the Main reason, Label Type is for tracking label variations. Other platforms have label variations as well. Intellivision has some labels that are plain text, some have pictures just like the Atari ones.
I'll think about this one, its not going to be an easy one.
Keep 'em comming. I have ZERO (No punn intended ) problem with people suggesting or even commenting on my work.
If someone doesn't like something, speak up! I usually have a very good reason for doing things a certain way. If I think someone has a better idea, I'll go with that. I'm easy :-)
If you're dieing to see something added, speak up as well. If I don't think about it and no one says anything, then it will never get added.
Keep in mind, I may say "No" to some ideas and its generally for one of the following reasons:
1) Its not very useful. If its only used maybe 1 out of 10,000 times the program is used and its going to take me a week to do it, chances are slim that it will make it in.
2) Its WAY beyond the scope of CC. A good example of this would be tracking every detail about a cartridge, including screen shots, instructions, etc... Cart Commander is a Utility for tracking cartridges. There are plenty of other sources for all that information.
AtariAge is one of those resources and thats why I added the intergration into CC. If you want more info about a cart, you press CTRL-I and it brings up AtariAge's page for that game. It would be redundant for CC to track this information when Albert and Alex have done such a great job of accumulating this information in one easy to find spot.
3) Its too limited in scope. If its only going to be used for a specific platform, I would rather try to come up with a more generic way of doing it.
4) There are other tools out there that already do the job. I could easily add the ability to track the game ROMS, but there is a utility out there for doing that, and it does WAY more than what I would want to do.
I want Cart Commander to be the best Inventory tool for tracking cartridge collections. I don't want it to be everything a collector needs. This is why I was reluctant to add hardware tracking, however, this enough of a demand that I am going to add it.
