UAV looks promising. VBXE looks hella pricy

I have more money than I do time and modding skills. Maybe someone here would be willing to take a crack at my unit

Damn! And here I was thinking I had a good idea! -
8bit Pac-man "Arcade" - Final Version - Accepting Orders
AlecRob replied to tep392's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I had a suggestion for pac-man arcade, an idea i was thinking would be a simple hack: change the pupils of the ghosts eyes from being the color of the ghost to just being see through. in other words, instead of filling in their pupils with color, just make them holes. then, the background (which is mostly black) will shine through... -
newbie question - how different are the 8-bit computers?
AlecRob replied to Tangentg's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
My current setup is a mexican market 65XE with SIO2PC and Atarimax cartridge. I use composite video as it has less video quirks than S-Video (s video is almost TOO good at times, it reveals all the video quirks that my system has, like vertical lines etc.) -
HACK PLEASE
-
Hm. So from my research there seems to be no standard and commonly-accepted method to remove the junk from XE screens? If only there were some expert I could just mail my Atari to with a wad of cash who can magically mod away all my worries hahahaha
-
i like the 5200 version for its unique controls. You can press forward or backward and jump any direction without needing a running start!

I'd like to find a version of this hack i can play on my 8-bit computer...

"Apple-like" games on the Atari 800 etc.
AlecRob replied to Britishcar's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Microgammon 5200 uses this video mode. We should try to compile a full list of games that use this color technique! -
Is there an internal mod one can do to reduce or eliminate the lines while still using the monitor output connector on the back of the console? I've heard disabling composite helps, but I'd like to actually use composite.. (For games that use artifacting colors)
-
I've heard there's a special cable that helps. Any input from somebody experienced would be very appreciated

I was doing some research on this, and mostly only came up with several year old threads on the subject. Does anyone have a reliable method of fixing the video output on my 65XE? Ugly lines are visible on my CRT even in RF. though I'm wanting to set it up so I can switch between s-video and composite for different games... I get the thin jail bars and thicker faint lines on the left side of the screen. I hear this is caused by some kind of power line in the system that needs to be bypassed with a wire or something. Anyone have pics of a good video mod I could do on this computer?

Thanks bro!

Games that use Apple II-style artifacting for colors
AlecRob posted a topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Does anyone have a list of games that use this graphical technique? I'm fascinated by this graphical style on the A8... Why was it even used? The hardware was capable of regular color, so why use tricks to produce inferior quality? -
looking for a 5200 version of mario bros that sounds good on XE...

how the heck do you actually use APE with SIO2PC (USB)
AlecRob replied to AlecRob's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Alright. I got aspeQt running when I set handshake to software. (Thanks!!!) Next thing to figure out is APE trial version, still seems to do nothing... -
It seems like i have EVERYTHING right in my settings, and i've followed all the guides online, yet when i try to start a game, i just get the self test screen. Does anyone have a fool-proof step by step guide for using this thing on USB so i know i'm not making some kind of dumb mistake somewhere? I bought this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/182445581662?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT it lights up green when i plug it into my computer, but the atari (65XE) seems to not read anything from it.

Okay, i have a C-100 PONG as well. The paddle knobs have been GLUED on and so i cannot remove them. I would like this unit to be restored eventually too. anyone have any ideas for the knobs? if i try to pull them off, they'll certainly break i think.

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/130307/video_games_first_space_opera_.php In this article, Doug Neubauer states that he created a star raiders-like game on the NES, and that was never released because the NES was already dead by the time he finished it. I for one would LOVE to see this game, and I'm sure many Star Raiders fans would love to see it too. If only we could track down Doug and ask if he has the ROM somewhere...

I'm interested in getting my 65XE modded this way. Can somebody recommend a professional to do this? (I don't trust myself soldering my precious Atari!)
-
Wait haven't I seen Mario bros running on an XEGS in YouTube videos? (see classic game room) That's the same as a 65XE afaik.
-
too bad Mario bros cartridge costs so much more than the 7800 version or almost any other version. Mario bros won't run on the compact flash card? Hmm who do I have to ask for modding services?
-
Oh shit i didnt see those. Space Harrier? mario bros? maybe it was foolish of me to get a computer that cant be expanded to play those games because those are two of the main ones i wanted to play. dammit! Thanks now i regret my uneducated purchase. depressing.

looks to me there aren't many games that use extra RAM, anyway. I saw a list and it seemed to be mostly utility software/productivity/demoscene stuff I don't care about...
