This is why i LOVE the PC Engine. The visual style and sound are so completely unlike anything else.

I like to pretend it’s the 90s and console turf wars are still a thing

I would like to see them release a $99 micro console with the ability to purchase digital games. A 50/50 mix of new and vintage games would be ideal. SNK has a great back library, but if you aren't a fighting game enthusiast, it gets same-y very quickly. This is my second choice.
My first choice would be for them to forgo the hardware at all and just release on the switch.
How about release games for the Atari VCS? Switch?!? What are you some kind of traitor!?

Just now, jerseystyle said:Why? I don’t see any point of comparison between the two other than the label on the box. I’m not even sure if I’d consider the VCS a system (in the sense of a traditional console). Is the Raspberry Pi a system? Is the Pandora retro stick a system?
Lynx was designed by a company other than atari. it is pretty much an Epyx console as much as the PC Engine is a Hudson Soft console. Atari VCS was clearly not designed by atari of old, but is still an atari product nonetheless. Raspberry pis are systems yes. If it runs games it is a system. Atari VCS could be seen as the successor to the little-known Atari PC line of products from the 80s

31 minutes ago, Shawn said:I had noticed that as well. There are multiple Atari owners represented in the release of those consoles that section so perhaps it would be more fitting there? Just cause they are not a favorable owner of Atari doesn't mean they are not (sadly) included in the laundry list of companies that have had that name attached to their machines. Atari in name alone is still Atari, like it or not. I myself do not.
I always argue that if the Lynx is an Atari system, then so is the VCS.

Still better than dead horse kicking taco threads full of people saying over and over that VCS isnt a real atari console

Fake? They bought the intellectual property fair and square. Companies are bought and sold all the time. It’s not like they stole the name and are putting out bootleg products.

I wouldnt be bummed. The more the merrier. I would totally buy the next SNK system. cuz i’m a sucker. I’ll put it right next to my atari VCS.

Atari, SA hatred: because Tramiel’s Atari of the 80s and early 90s was soooo great. lol
at least this atari actually somewhat listens to fans, like how they updated the VCS specs several times during development. And used a ryzen CPU at fans request. Tramiel’s Atari flopped because they were ridiculously out of touch with the public and released 90 percent garbage games for 7800 and Jaguar.

I agree. I think this has 100% been a crap show of a project. The only way it will change opinions is if it exceeds the low bar expectations it set itself. Seems like it is coming in Beta condition, which is not a good first start to change anyone's mind.
I still think people can be excited for it. I don't understand saying it's a game changing type product. It's mediocre at best with an LED. I think WE have enjoyed the ride of tacos and jokes. If others have a fun time being told, "Nah we aren't shipping this yet," over and over more power to them.
I agree it isn't as bad as that type of trauma. However, there were backers like John P who did seem to have a lot invested emotionally in it. So it could potentially be more "traumatic" for some than others. Just because there are worse things out there doesn't mean they should get a pass either.
You lack interest in a PC but say the Sandbox mode (um PC mode makes this more interesting). There is zero evidence that this will have any type of longevity as a console. Sandbox will make it last longer, but that goes back to why not spend that money on a small PC that is better and will last longer?
If it is just the Atari logo I would say get a PC and buy an AtariAge sticker that comes with homebrews and slap that on the PC. Plus if it is a PC how will the feel be any different than a PC experience?
I think there is some cognitive dissonance sometimes when people tout the sandbox mode yet don't get why people say, "buy a better PC for cheaper."
Ha! Someone needs to post the graphic. Maybe Flo will make her reappearance soon?

Doesnt the VCS check if there is an otherOS on external drive before booting to atari menu?

11 minutes ago, Matt_B said:I somehow doubt its security will be on a par with a Sony or Nintendo console and they pretty much always get compromised eventually.
The big question would be whether, with a user base of only 10,000 or so, anyone will bother.
Everything gets hacked..

I’m sure it is possible to boot from internal storage. I cant see this thing being that hard to hack...
-
So it looks like you can install custom OS on internal drive? Am i reading this correctly?

Honestly I much prefer a web interface with keyboard for streaming over the usual crappy apps. No complaints there. Giving us Missile Command is pretty cool, as that new one looks pretty good to be honest.

24 minutes ago, Shaggy the Atarian said:Funny that the Switch gets overlooked here, when it's become one of the best selling game consoles in history. Fair enough that the XB1 and PS4 weren't much different than a closed-system PC, but to claim that the Switch was nothing more than a vehicle logo is disingenuous. Also, what about Labo and Augmented Reality through Mario Kart Live?
Sandbox mode is a nice feature for the VCS, but here's why that isn't a selling point to me - I already own three PCs that are far more powerful and capable than the VCS hardware is. If I wanted to spend $400 on another laptop, then I could do so, and it'd outperform the VCS in every category, so I just don't see the appeal. What can I do in Sandbox mode on the VCS that I can't do already with my laptop or two desktops?
I usually lack interest in PC’s because they are a different target market compared to consoles. Different aesthetic and feel too. VCS is a console that doubles as a PC, with a bit of brand nostalgia thrown in. Again I have to wonder why thats supposed to be a bad idea...

1 hour ago, Stephen said:Well, I guess some people like being verbally or physically abused and lied to in a relationship. Not everyone does, I'd say in fact most don't. That's why people just can't enjoy the ride. They don't appreciate the lies, deception, poor business practices, being sold an inferior product for an inflated price, etc.
As someone who has been through actual abuse in the context of relationships and having literally years of therapy i can tell you a slightly shady video game company’s antics are in no way comparable to enduring actual real life trauma. I still think people are blowing this way out of proportion. If you put a magnifying glass to most big game companies (or big corporations/tech companies in general) you would definitely find a lot worse stuff than anything atari, SA has done. Do you think sony or microsoft or nintendo have never told lies before? lol.
who cares if it’s merely a vehicle for a logo? What are consoles anymore anyway? For the past few generations that is basically all they have been, near identical machines with different logos.
sandbox mode right out of the gate automatically makes it more interesting than xbox or sonybox to me. As for being limited to external hard drives for sandbox... meh. External hard drives take up very little space these days. Besides, i have no doubts that the system will be hacked in no time to allow internal storage for sandbox.
