  1. Question on AA Mario Bros: Does it include the US version or just Japan?

I watched some YouTube footage and noticed that the first bonus stage was Phase 4, which tells me at least that video used Japan (US version's first bonus stage is Phase 3).

I also saw a bunch of internet articles showing people getting kill screens and maxing out the score, but the US version has no such limits and can be played forever.

Excited about the possibility of a first-ever "proper" home console experience for this game, but it would have to include the US version for me to get the most out of it.

    Any thoughts appreciated.  Thanks!

  2. Had some spare time last night and decided to experiment with playing beyond just 12 levels on Jumpman Junior. Turns out that if you can bulid up a bank of extra lives, the end of level bonuses can get pretty hefty after a while. It took about an hour to get to 150k, but that quickly became a million after just under three hours. By the end, I was scoring so many bonus points that I would collect at least one extra life after every stage (sometimes two or three)!

    Anyway, here we go:

    Jumpman Junior - 1,011,725 (Speed 3)

The scoreboard rolls over at a million. Here's a shot from just before:

And another from just after (funny how this game doesn't show leading zeroes):

Finally, I let the lives bonus run one last time before quitting. As fate would have it, I ended up on the Hellstones stage, which has a 100-point lives bonus. This made it easy to see how many lives I had remaining. 105 lives in all! Makes me wonder if the game would break if I got a few more, like in Missile Command or Super Mario Bros.

  3. I think stages 10 and 20 of Jumpman took me the longest to figure out among all of the levels in the game. I think those are the only levels where you can screw yourself over and make the level unbeatable by using the wrong collection sequence.

Here's a hint on 14 (Dragon Slayer): It may not seem like it since you throw arrows on this level, but you CAN still jump straight up. You can get past the dragons without fighting them if you stand on the hills and just jump over them. This is the only yellow (shooting) stage where you can jump.

Even today, Jumpman remains as one of my all time favorite games. I've been playing it since I was 6 and it never gets old!

    Jumpman Junior - 41,650

Had some time last night to play a round of Junior. I did this on Speed 3. Beat all 12 levels and got the screen you see below. The game just goes on forever after this with the same 12 levels randomized, so I stopped here.

  4. Jumpman

    222,650 Total Score

    (Speed 4: 60,350, Speed 3: 62,950, Speed 2: 76,450, Speed 1: 22,900)

    86,350 Total Bonus

    (Speed 4: 19,350, Speed 3: 22,050, Speed 2: 35,450, Speed 1: 9,500)

Was able to beat the game on speeds 4, 3, and 2, before dying on stage 10 on speed 1. My Speed 3 score was a bit low, as I lost a lot of men early in the game when my jump button briefly stopped working (not sure how to prevent it, but it really sucks in a game like this!). I also avoided shooting anything on the yellow stages (Invasion, Dragon Slayer, Gunfighter), where you can just sit around forever and kill regenerating enemies.

  5. Hi there, another game another set of confusion! Play Jumpman on the default (I'm guessing it's speed 4) then if you beat it (and assuming it ends) you can bank the score and continue on speed 3 etc.

For Jr. it's a bonus game so were not too strict so play on any speed 4 or above as you wish

Sounds good, thanks! Haven't played this in a while, but I used to be able to beat it. Should be fun!

For the longest time as a kid, I had a damaged game that would make my disk drive buzz whenever I passed level 28. This always caused the game to glitch itself back to the title screen. :( It took me a really long time to find a replacement copy.

  6. Hey, finally another game that I actually own! :)

Question: Looking at the rules, I can't quite tell what to do. Do we have the option to start on any speed setting or are we supposed to use the default (4?) and only upgrade the speed if we beat the game? Can scores be "banked" if you beat the game on Grand Loop or something?

  7. Even in my best days I never beat level 4. I rarely beat level 3. In a single run I am not sure even back then I ever made it from one all the way into three. So rdrunner, you are better than I was when I was at my best.

Wow, best compliment I've ever had right there. It means so much coming from you. Thanks!

It's truly an honor to meet you. I've never actually talked to the maker of one of my favorite games before!

So I have to ask, since you would probably know best: Do you think that Champion Mission is beatable? I keep thinking that with enough practice, anything is possible, but yikes...

  8. How do you know if that Super Pac-man cart is an Atari made proto and not someones home made cart? I'm not saying it isn't. I'm just asking because I'm not familiar with it.

I bought it from an online reseller back in the '90s (BEST Software, I think). Not sure exactly how to tell the difference between an Atari-made proto and a homemade one. I just took their word for it at the time.

  9. Hey everyone. Looking to sell a few old Atari Computer cartridges, including a rare prototype of Super Pac-Man. I thought I'd post them here in case you were interested.

I'm new to AtariAge, but not eBay. I have a perfect feedback rating over 150 (including a lot of recent sales). Have a look!

  10. I know, that 330k has been nagging at me as well. I've always dreamed of doing a 6-loop run (one for each mission) or at least beating the game on Champion Mission, but it just hasn't worked out (best I've done is Sector 3). This game is a beast!

I got excited when I saw this thread a played a bit over the weekend. I got 230,952, reaching Loop 3, Sector 5. Almost made it through, but that level usually takes me out. Had a good run going, but deaths came in bunches when I reached Sector 4 (as usual).

I may play some more first, but I plan on putting up a complete video of a run on YouTube when I finish. I have been meaning to improve that video ever since I posted it and just never got back to it.

I've been here since 2008 Beep! Beep!

Welcome to Atariage and the 8 bit HSC rdrunner ;)

Funny, I didn't realize there was already a road runner here! I just used the handle that I use everywhere else. :)

I like your animated avatar. I've always wanted to do something like that, but I never learned how.

  11. Hey everyone. I'm the guy from the YouTube videos with the 330k score (Charlie Sheen voice and all :) ). I don't play a lot of Atari games, but this is one of my all-time favorites. I've been playing it since my youth and it never gets old!

Great scores so far in the contest. Getting through the game even once is no joke!

  12. If you are running a 800XE that is a PAL machine... Are you using a PAL capable TV/Monitor?

Hmm I don't think it's a PAL machine. My aunt bought this computer at a retail store back in the '80s. Perhaps I'm using the name wrong, but I remember the box having "XE" on it. It's one of those machines that has Missile Command built in. Maybe just leave the "800" part out?

  13. Thanks for all the info.

To answer some of the questions, the box appears to be clean, without any oxidization (though maybe I just don't know what it looked like originally). I checked all the connections for tightness. TV is on the correct channel.

I don't think the picture gets better the longer it's on. It fluctuates from good to bad throughout its usage.

That's cool about the composite and s-video possibilities. Does this literally mean that you can use an HDTV as a monitor? I don't have composite on the CRT, but I have an old HDTV that I could hook up.

  14. Hey everyone (new to this site. first post. Woo!).

Was wondering if I could get some advice on my Atari 800 XE comptuer. The thing still works, but I'm having trouble with the picture. I have it plugged into an old CRT television with an RF modulator that has one of those sliding switches that goes between "tv" and "computer".

It doesn't work very well. The screen is all staticy when I first turn the machine on. Sometimes the picture corrects itself, but any small movement will mess it up. I can sometimes fix the picture by lightly tapping the cords with my fingers, but it's not a reliable method.

So I'm curious, is there a simple way that I can fix this? Do I need like a new RF switch or perhaps some alternative equipment? What do you guys use and do you experience the same issues that I do?

    Thanks for all your help!
