Should You Criticize a Console You Haven't Played?
phoenixdownita replied to 8bitgamer's topic in Intellivision / Aquarius
Why not? You don't know if it's gonna be the bee's knees because you have not tried it. Give it a fair try, use both hands for that tight grip of death and then you can have an opinion ... no? All your stories are about how you started with preconceived notions that you proved wrong by trying .... why not this one? PS: NO, DO NOT TRY IT, I am obviously being sarcastic, just to prove a silly point. -
Should You Criticize a Console You Haven't Played?
phoenixdownita replied to 8bitgamer's topic in Intellivision / Aquarius
You kind of can, especially wrt to some notable classic ones. You can literally just have a relatively close to reality opinion wrt the CDi, Amiga CD32, and even 3DO and Jaguar by just looking around YT, they were all bad systems (or if you prefer systems with a lot of bad games) with maybe a couple of "not terrible" moments .... as to something mainstream with a more varied set of productions it's a little more complex but take NES, SNES, MD, SMS, PCE, PSX, Saturn, N64 ... a starting opinion of "it ain't bad" is actually quite acceptable. I hope when you state your opinions on movies you've never seen you have at least read around about someone else's reactions (like checking the seller feedback so to speak) and formed an indirect opinion by checking enough reputable sources .... -

OK, but that's only half a sentence .... you can't have a definite opinion on something that doesn't exist, but you can still have an opinion based on the ephemeral effects of marketing (if there was no hype machine/marketing at play there would be no need to even have an opinion as all of it would be revealed only the day of launch, no earlier bs in an attempt to stop potential customers from buying something else [or delaying it at the least] and so have "some" money left/earmarked the day of the launch). About the "try it" ... not sure it generalizes the way you think, I don't need to try to crack my "nuts" with a nutcracker to have the opinion that it may not be a good thing to do ... and no amount of "you should try before you form your opinion" would convince me otherwise. -
If you are willing to throw 400US$ for a "ready-to-go" box and a "clean UI" (but use your own originals) I think at this point we should petition AtGames for it. I'm sure they can do it for under 300US$ .... easy UI, nothing to configure and likely many games included .... they screwed up for so many years they are apparently getting their shit together and the last few units seems to be within reach of where one would place the word reasonable ... plus they actually ship every xmas season ... that's like clockwork and I have to hand it to them they missed no holiday season so far. EDIT: also if that was all that they meant to do (emulation) they surely spent a lot of time spewing bs for years on how different their system was "you'll see, hybrid emulation is the future" [well apparently it isn't] just to make a 180 and get back to ... non-hybrid ... totally conventional software based emulation ... I am not even sure the choice of Intel will pay off, the current gen of ARM A76/A77 may be competitive enough and likely cheaper. The only tech that may be interesting is the light gun, but somehow I can't believe it isn't someone else's idea already. EDIT2: they are also so stuck up that they didn't want to add the second cart slot (or adapter) and extension port to support Famicom games into their EM01 NES module https://www.polymega.com/product/polymega-module-set-em01-nes/ I am sure those 2 piece of hardware and the extra holes in the molds would have been prohibitive

What's Your Moral Stance On ROMS?
phoenixdownita replied to Magmavision2000's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Well, if you really want to And again why is this a NEED, you don't have to experience it, you want to but that's it .... it so happens there's an easy avenue to it which complicates matters further imho. I think it is immoral that people have a second or third house they keep empty for 95% of the time so I believe I should be able to use it for free (fixing my mess in case) when they are not there .... -
What's Your Moral Stance On ROMS?
phoenixdownita replied to Magmavision2000's topic in Classic Console Discussion
No it's not the main problem. Copyright laws were put in place not only for money but also for allowing the rights holders the freedom to do as they please with their own creations (Mario or Mickey Mouse or Sonic, or music or games or anything that can be copyrighted) .... and if they choose to bury them to "never been seen again" ... or well until the expiration of the copyright, so be it. The fact that "if I don't make any money" then it's fine means nothing .... you cannot create copies or any derivative work even if you do all of it for free .... it is not that hard really. The legal way is for you to make your own backups by your means, that's pretty much it (and yes fair use for critique, parody, journalism ...) To top it all of none of this undermines anyone's livelihood, nobody has a gaming emergency and MUST experience game X for system Y at any point in his/her life. We do it knowing what we do, we try to make ourselves feel better about it (nobody is losing any money etc...etc...) but it's just that, projecting our wants, and excusing our deeds. I really believe laws should change to make it clear how to be able to consume/enjoy things that are inherently relatively easy to duplicate/replicate without having to feel guilty but Disney has been relentless, that's for sure. I repeat nobody needs to own any full romset or even half of it, or to play "rare" rom titles because they are "rare" ... we surely want to. -
What's Your Moral Stance On ROMS?
phoenixdownita replied to Magmavision2000's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Why spending so much time trying to find a "moral stance" about something that is still illegal in many jurisdictions? There are exceptions, some ROMs have been put in the public domain and so on ... but until the laws on copyright change there's no "moral stance" about it. You do as you please but there's no "moral ground" on which to justify it until the current copyright laws hold. Now onto how to change them .... that's the right question imho. Btw if you live in one of the jurisdictions in which ROMs are free to copy and copyrights either don't apply or have expired, then obviously you are not doing anything wrong and once again you need no "moral stance" about it. -
Is it? It costs an arm and a leg, it's been "brewing" for 4 years and doesn't really offer a whole lot on top of any other emulation box ... This project should have been left for dead years ago, only thing remaining is to see if the few units that ship before the company folds (if they don't fold before), are going to rise in price or tank .... nothing else really. (no I don't care to play directly my original CD games on this thing, and this comes from someone that has Panzer Dragoon Saga original and a Saturn Floppy Drive HSS-0128 to go with it .... maybe I'm pissed that they do not support the Saturn serial interface ... maybe!) PS: yes, this is just my opinion, obviously.

Maybe it's already known but the controller looks like a minor variation on this one (GameSir G3s) I have the G3w (wired version of it) and it's alright at best. I have no idea who owns the actual design on these things so they may all come from the same factory.
-
No need for the hundreds, about 35US$ shipped with lots of CHDs, less without CHDs, obviously in this case it is a stack of DVDs, done it two or three time and was alright (aside complete radio silence until the package showed up, in my case in about 3 weeks or so on each occurrence). Last time instead I went for a different, more expensive, solution because I didn't want to go over so many DVDs and wanted some other stuff as well, so yeah I broke the couple/three hundreds, worked well enough for me, the fella made a mistake but was eager to fix it so I sent the drive back and got it re-imaged and all is well. Note: I didn't need that much stuff, it just so happens the price was right at the right moment, maybe at that point in time I had more money than brain, possible .... still quite satisfied

Eventually MAME will start to emulate old MAME so old romsets just works, MAMEonMAME or MAME-SQUARED ...whatev .... It's nice that they keep on pushing the envelop, mind you, just being sarcastic (a little). Once every few years I "buy" the "full romset" from more or less "reputable" sources just so I don't have to spend the time chasing them down myself.

Thanks a bunch for the pic, mine is very different, still 2 glob tops but lots more passive components and even a quartz ... let alone a couple of capacitors and diodes hot glued on the bottom (directly in the plastic case) on the power lines .... so not so easy to figure anything out. My PCB is square with the 3 buttons in a separate mini PCB connected by "ribbon" cable. Most likely a much earlier revision (2005 July 17) not sure if the PAL was inherently different/redesigned. Worth a try, thanks for playing along. PS: did not have the phone close by to take a picture, sorry, but given how different it is .... no point.

It's been worked on: http://furrtek.free.fr/sdloader/index.htm

No, I don't remember it being that, I took mine apart to try and find a magical pair of solderpads with NTSC/PAL in it (like the NeoGeo CD if you know what I mean) .... but no luck ... I hope it's not hardcoded in the firmware ... we'll see.
-
Once you have it let us know how it works out, I guess you asked and it is an NTSC unit right? It would be great if you have the time and skills if you can open it up and take pictures of the PCB (front and back) so I can see if there's anything obviously different between your NTSC and my PAL unit and attempt to mod mine. If you don't want to mess with it I understand.
-
That US seller I linked may be selling a NTSC unit, worth the ask, at ~40US$ shipped seems fair.
-
NTSC TVs do not like PAL signals, if you're lucky it may just display B&W + no-sound, if not it will not even sync (50Hz vs 60Hz and different line count per field). So yes it matters, I play mine via converter (Composite to HDMI) or it just wouldn't work at all on my TVs. I cannot say if the games are also slowed down by 17% or have been adapted to compensate, I am not "very good" at any of them to tell (and they were tough to begin with anyway). I still wanted it and I still think it's a nice unit but I'd rather have the NTSC version than the PAL that I have, I stopped actively seeking any of these type of units unless it can be proven it's arcade rom emulation (like the Bandai Namco Arcade Blast) and I am not sure I can say that it is. This unit is from 2005 so it could be anything but I doubt it's MAME-level emulation (I may be wrong about this though).
-
Still have it, I got it from the UK via eBay .... mine is PAL and I couldn't see any pad/via to solder on the PCB to try if it can be made NTSC. I've been told an NTSC variant was sold in Canada for at least a few months I honestly did not play it that much but it felt alright to me: 1942, Commando and Ghosts n Goblins (link to YT video, not mine) One ebay seller in the USA (don't know if PAL or NTSC) https://www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-Capcom-Plug-and-Play-3-in-1-TV-Game-Ghosts-N-Goblins-Commando-1942-Retro-/223921914644

Comprehensive Plug-and-Play Listing

If by flipping upside down you mean 180 degree rotation (and switch buttons) then the twisty control should work just as well (yes the video cord would be on the wrong side like the dreamcast joypad so to speak) -

Probably you mean "Air Sea Battle" because in Combat there's only Tanks, Planes and Jets. -
SCART, S-Video, and NTSF RF to VGA....
phoenixdownita replied to tripletopper's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Wrt polling for input: https://byuu.net/input/latency according to byuu most SNES games do check input once per frame (but not all), so the only lag you need to care is technically in frames. As long as your modern TV/monitor does not add full frames of lag (your PSTV3D at 32ms adds 2 full frames) you should be good. Not sure what games would start to get too hard with 1 full frame of lag, ideally anything that stays say half a frame behind or so should be good enough. As you stated light gun games are more tricky but it depends on consoles and games, tolerance varies and of course the less the lag the better ... a few lines of lag may be alright and within tolerance of the game. -
SCART, S-Video, and NTSF RF to VGA....
phoenixdownita replied to tripletopper's topic in Classic Console Discussion
FYI: at 240p60 refresh like the one of consoles of old, it takes 16.6msec per single screen, at 240lines that is about 69.3 usec (microsec) per single line. So your fighting game example reaction time of 0.1 msec (aka 100usec) makes literally no sense, because it would mean you can react in about 1 line and a half .... I just don't think it's even possible. -

I got this one: he wants "low ping".
