@ Serious: I agree earning bonus points for hints and strategies is too easy. You could simply google for tips and copy/paste them here.
I however like your idea of mini / bonus games to earn additional points

Bonus game:
I think you should clarify it a little more in post #1 so everybody fully understands additional points can be won by playing this extra game.
Reading post #1 it kind of looks like the bonus game is part of Nitro Ball as this game also has pinball elements

It maybe helps to summarize the game settings using the same "layout" as the main game of the week. Something like this:
--------------------------------------------
Additional points can be won be playing this week's bonus game........
BONUS GAME: Pinball Action.
ROMSet: PBAction
Dipswitches: 3 lives, Bonus Life at 70K and 200K, other settings on "easy"Only the top 3 will earn Pinball Action bonus points.......etc
--------------------------------------------
Not to criticize anything...just throwing my two cents

Game on! Starting things off with an interesting shooter...one I've never heard of before...chosen by a newcomer, GimmeClassics!
Wow, that's cool ! I'm excited Nitro Ball has been chosen as game of the week
. Thanks !I really enjoy playing this game. A lot of things happening at once. A kind of weird but fun game to play

Here is an article I found that talks about Nitro Ball
Thanks for the share NIKON ! It's a really good "Run and Shoot" game as mentioned in the article

Ok! First game for season 6 is coming up now. I didn't want to wait a week, but I had some things at home to take care of. Wife just had knee surgery and she's going in for sinus surgery in a couple weeks, so I've been kind of busy around the house.
I've added the new games to the list and look for the first game of season 6 to be posted shortly.
I hope everything is going well !
I'm excited Season 6 has started

Congratulations to patbb...our season 5 winner. Will he hold the title through season 6 or will someone take him down?
Congratulations patbb !

The Top User tables only show the top 20.
There are actually 94 members right now, and more joining every day.
That's great news ! I hope this will positively help getting 10 votes more quickly; especially for M.A.M.E. games as Atari (games and members) is by far the most represented

Thank you for sharing this info

Highscore.com RULES !

There are now 20 highscore.com members.
I've recently submitted high scores for Jumping Jack and Nitro Ball (M.A.M.E.). If I understand it correctly both games need 10 votes (70% yes) to be legit. This means 50% of all the high score members have to vote for each submission. And most submission are Atari game submissions and from a lot of members who know each other from atariage.com.
I think needing 50% of all members to vote for your submission is quite a lot. Also, the chance of somebody who is only playing Atari games to vote for 50% of all of the M.A.M.E. high score submissions is quite slim.
This results in having to wait quite some time to get 10 votes for your submission. I'm now waiting several days for my submissions to get enough votes.
I'm not impatient but I think needing 10 votes (50% of the members) for your high score submission is maybe too much. This is a good option when more will join highscore.com but I think something like 5 or max 7 votes would be much better. Especially for non-atari games.
I'd love to hear what you think about this

Highscore.com motivates submitters to use video as proof of their score.
Up until now I've only used a snapshot as proof of my score and I unfortunately got a few "not legit"-votes
:(
:(Which video recording software do you recommend for recording M.A.M.E. games ?

I guess you didn't succeed uploading your spreadsheet with Winzip/rar. Here are my suggestions:
Nitro Ball
Clash-Road
Jumping Jack
Congo Bongo
Donkey Kong Jr.

@ Serious > your website is improving every day. Keep up the good work

I read your message about adding my initials to my username. How do I change my username ? I've tried changing it on "Your Home Page" and "View Your Profile" without any luck... >> UPDATE: sorry, I figured it out

Not any more. Twin Galaxies was dropped by Guinness since they began charging $ to verify scores.
I'm not surprised they did. I'm feeling sorry for Walter Day his amazing Twin Galaxies is turning into a money machine due to the involvement of Richie Knucklez and "friends" ;(
But......we now have a great alternative: highscore.com

Thanks for clarifying Rmaerz !
Hmm.. Good point.
There is a functional difference, but both versions accomplish something very similar. The rapid-fire approach of the "Vote and Earn Points" is intended to make it quick/easy for people to vote on various scores, if they aren't looking for a specific one. The page you suggested seems more oriented towards helping people who want to vote on a score for a specific game or category.
Maybe I should move the "Waiting on Votes" link to the "Vote" page? Like an option to view all scores waiting on votes, instead of just the rapid-fire voting approach. That way, users can choose, and it will save space in the left navigation area.
I think having one "Vote menu option" would work well. But I can't seem to figure out what would be the best name for this menu option:
"Waiting on Votes" > it's immediately clear for users they will get a summary of high scores that still need votes to be acknowledged.
"Vote (and earn points)" > it's immediately clear for users they will earn points when voting which will possibly motivate them to vote.
I like both equally.....I think it should be a mix of both. Maybe something like "Waiting on Votes (Earn points)" .....?
High Score will never charge users for submitting scores. Ever.
I like that

Two questions / suggestions I came up with

1. When you search for a particular game and it's showing high scores which are waiting on votes I think the "vote button" should be visible. This will allow the user to immediately see the details of the submission and choose to submit their vote.
2. What will happen with high scores which you have voted for and have a legit percentage of less than 70% ? Will these high scores - after you have voted - not be visible when you would search for that particular game ? If not, shouldn't it be visible with maybe a remark like "not yet acknowledged"...?

Basically, default settings is the "default" for all games on the site, MAME or otherwise.
There's two reasons for this:
1. The amount of time needed to research all of the available settings for all games for all systems would have greatly increased the time needed to add games to the database.
2. I believe, in most cases, most players play with the default settings.
However, I can add any variation of any game that you want to submit a score for.
I'm not very familiar with Twin Galaxies rules or MAME settings in general. It sounds like something I should research.
I completely understand. Specifying settings per game (other than default) would indeed be time consuming.
Twin galaxies is an organization that tracks video game world records since 1981 and Guiness World Records considers them to be the official supplier of verified world records.
However, they are now asking money for each submission and you have to wait quite some time to get your score accepted (and be visible). So it has become less interesting to me. I will only submit a high score when it would be a TG world record. So, your website is a great alternative

It's nice you're accepting any variation of any game. Personally I think you shouldn't have too much variations of one game. I think it would be best (in most cases) to have one variation of each game. This way you can compare your score with all users having submitted a score for that game
I think having one high score table per game is the best option.Using default settings for each game doesn't sound that bad after all
...but it's nice you're accepting any variation
This is now added.
http://highscore.com/scoreboard/waiting.php
You will see the link to this page in the left navigation link titled "Waiting On Votes".
The top section are your own scores that are waiting on votes.
The sections below that are all of the other user's scores, grouped by category (system). For the scores in this list that you have not voted on, yet, there will be a "Vote" button next to them.
Very nice improvement Serious !!!! I love it !
One small thing > I was wondering why there are two menu options for voting: "Vote (and earn points)" and "Waiting on Votes". Waiting on votes seems to cover everything

Thank you for all your effort so far

Scores that are submitted but waiting on votes will appear in the search results, now.
Thanks for the suggestion, and keep the ideas coming!
@ Serious: thank you very much for implementing my request !! This is so much better

I have a few other ideas / suggestions
:1. M.A.M.E. default game settings
The default rules on your website for a M.A.M.E. high score submission are: "Play with default settings. No continues. 1 player only. No use of hacked ROMs or emulator advantages"
I have a question about these "default settings". Have you intentionally choosen for this rule ? I have always played my games using the Twin Galaxies settings. I like the possibility to compare my score with the official TG world records. I have - for example - played Jumping Jack quite a few times using the TG settings which require you to use medium difficulty. The default game settings are however on easy difficulty.
Again, maybe you have intentionally choosen to follow these default settings. I find it fun to be able to compare my hi-score with the official TG high scores. What do you think about this ? Would it be possible to copy / paste the dip switch settings from the Twin Galaxies website when you add a game to your database ? It's a little more work but it would definitely contribute to the fun factor I think

Example: when you want to know the TG settings for Jumping Jack (Mame) > go to twingalaxies.com > scores > search for jumping jack > platform (mame) > points > select "Official settings".
I'll respect whatever you choose to do but I'd love to hear what you think about this

2. Voting
Did you have any luck with creating a separate page that shows all score submissions that are still being voted on ? I think this would definitely improve the voting process instead of 1 game per screen to vote on.
I love what you're doing with highscore.com !! It's becoming one of my favorite sites

@ deteacher: did you try my solution in the previous post to upload your spreadsheet ?

Which game settings do you have to use ? Dipswitches is still blank; see post #1....
...could someone perhaps explain what it's you exactly have to do..? I'm from Europe so I don't know all the rules of American football. All I know is you have to get the football to the endzone of your opponent. What things are allowed etc. Any tips are welcome

Greetings from an ignorant European guy

It's not letting me upload the Excel document. Looking into it. In the meantime, feel free to suggest games for the new season.

I know the IP.Board forum software allows you to post .zip or .rar files. So you could easily add your Excel document to WinZip or WinRar and post that file here

I've also sent you a PM btw...

Hello Serious,
I have a suggestion about browsing for highscores on your new website. You're doing a great job btw

I knew a friend of mine posted a highscore for Cyvern (Mame). So I went to your website and the most logical thing to do was search for that game using the website's search function. I however didn't find the highscore my friend had submitted.
I know scores where voting is in progress (less than 10 votes / not yet 70% legit) are not shown. Not finding my friends submission is however kind of odd I think and I would very much like to see it otherwise. It would be amazing if your website would show his submission as a not-yet-validated highscore when I search for Cyvern.
When I would submit a highscore it's first shown at the "Latest Scores" section at your homepage and it has a great chance of receiving some votes. After a while however my submission would disappear from this page because others have submitted their highscores. If the voting of my highscore would still be in progress (less than 10 votes / not yet 70% legit) nobody would be able to find my submission. They would have to go to "Vote" to eventually find my submission. The Vote section is however showing just one game per time and they would then have to go through all these games to eventually find my submission.
Again, I think it would be amazing if your website would show every submission when you search for a particular game. If the voting of a submission is still in progress it should be marked as "not-yet-validated" or something like "awaiting votes". People can then choose to immediately vote for that game. I think it would be better this way. Not being able to find a submission (or at least very hard to find) because the voting is still in progress is not perfect I think.
I hope it will be possible to incorporate this
Again, you're doing a great job with your new website and I am just throwing in my 2 cents to possibly help you make it even better

Nice score Darthkur !
I was wondering when this Jump Bug contest ends ? My local time (Netherlands) is now Saturday 1:33 AM. How long do I have to submit a score for Jump Bug ?

I was wondering where the spreadsheet can be found ?
I'd like to see the games not yet picked in season 5 to decide which games I will suggest for season 6
