Probably the easiest way to do this, if you just want to play the games, is to buy then again from GOG.com. Their installers do a good job and itll save you time. If youre looking for the whole retro experience of getting a vintage game to run on modern hardware, this article might help with the USB controller: https://itstillworks.com/12226738/how-to-use-usb-joysticks-with-dosbox

Yes, this works quite well for me. I had to dink with the Framemeister settings and make a custom Apple IIgs RGB to JP-21 cable. But it works! I did this about a year ago, but I think there are better cable solutions out there nowadays.

Gauging interest in a XF551 modified board for 1088XEL
Smokeless Joe replied to Dropcheck's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Such a board would be exceedingly cool! Where there any black bezels made for the XF551? 😁 -
I've got a few old A8-related boxes that are taking up space, mostly software boxes. It feels like a crime to just recycle them, but I can't imagine there's a market for just the boxes. Any suggestions? Thanks, -Joe

1088XEL Alternative Mother-Board Project
Smokeless Joe replied to mytek's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I didn't mean to cause any trouble with my OSH post! I priced things out through them because I didn't know any better. I've only ever used them and all my previous projects have been very small. I'm very glad to hear there are other, more cost effective, places available for PCB fabrication. -
1088XEL Alternative Mother-Board Project
Smokeless Joe replied to mytek's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Here's some back-of-envelope calculations on cost. Wikipedia says Mini-ITX is 17 x 17 cm or 6.7 x 6.7 inches. That's 44.89 square inches (SI). OSH Park (http://docs.oshpark.com/services) has two options for a 4 layer board: Prototype: $10/SI for three boards: so 44.89 SI x $10/SI = $448.90 for three boards Medium Run: $2/SI, 150 SI minimum: so 44.89 SI x 4 boards = 179.86 SI (150 SI minimum) x $2/SI = $359.12 for four boards The medium run is cheaper but takes longer (3-4 weeks vs. 2-3 weeks for prototypes). I've only ever made small boards, so the price is a little alarming, but that's not gonna stop me. Any other suggestions for PCB fabricators, or is this as good as it gets? -
1088XEL Alternative Mother-Board Project
Smokeless Joe replied to mytek's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Every time I see an updated schematic or layout, I hear the voice of The Old Man from A Christmas Story looking at The Lamp and saying "It's indescribably beautiful!" The only problem is that I really AM looking at a thing of beauty! I'm really looking forward to getting one of these. Will they be 100% roll-your-own or will there be any kind of kit available? -
There's a little discussion at: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/255424-atari-400-sound-mod-for-uav/?p=3562917 SIO/tape sounds seems to be the hardest part to do well. If you don't use that at all, just taking POKEY sound from R160 might be the easiest way to go.

I got my 400 audio board from orpheuswaking and it works nicely. I think he had a bunch, so it might be worth it to message him.

New Hardware Offering: 1200XL Cartridge port extension
Smokeless Joe replied to Dropcheck's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Oop! I'm using the mobile version of the forums, which doesn't show any signatures (at least, not on my mobile device). Switching to the full version lets me see everything. Short story: I'm a big monkey. -
New Hardware Offering: 1200XL Cartridge port extension

I'm probably blind, but I'm not seeing where we go to order these. Any hints? Thanks, - Joe -
It's been a couple years since I used Classilla (http://www.floodgap.com/software/classilla/) on OS 9, but I liked it. It did everything I needed OS 9 Internet to do, which was download games from the Macintosh Garden. Personally, I'd stick with OS 9, mostly for the nostalgia thing, but OS 10.4 should work okay. You can also create a dual-boot system with both, if you have the hard drive space.

I got the same message and I'm in in the USA. This is the first thing I've tried to order there and it also requires a REALLY strong password.

Very cool! I was wondering if that board could be used that way, so thanks for trying it out. While we're dreaming, a case would be nice too.

400: replacement paper liner at bottom of RF cage?
Smokeless Joe replied to Smokeless Joe's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I have a preliminary picture here: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/240686-transkey-ii-in-development/?p=3500451 Can't really see the header pins, though. I was hoping to get this finished this weekend but I've got the flu or something. What are your header pins getting in the way of? -
Solder four wires on the bottom of the motherboard and replace a card. Here's the instructions: http://www.digitpress.com/library/techdocs/atari_400_48k_ram.pdf

Purple is a solid color, but my favorite is Safety Orange. -
400: replacement paper liner at bottom of RF cage?
Smokeless Joe replied to Smokeless Joe's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
It probably provides some protection against shorts. I have the official Atari 48k upgrade, which puts wires on the bottom of the motherboard, so maybe it'll help there? I can't imagine the color makes a difference or can be seen from the outside. I just figured I might as well have fun with it if I have to make one anyway. -
I'm finally ready to reassemble my deluxe 400 (48K upgrade, UAV, TK-II) but I can't find the paper liner that goes in the bottom of the RF cage. I've cleaned my workshop thoroughly and now I'm afraid I accidentally recycled it. Any recommendations for replacements? I was thinking of just cutting a piece of construction paper to fit, maybe make it a bright, cheerful color.

Atari 400 sound mod for UAV?
Smokeless Joe replied to Smokeless Joe's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Woo! I got one! It works quite nicely. L to R: Bryan's UAV, orpheuswaking's 400 Audio Mod, and a LEGO 1x6 plate for scale (I couldn't find my ruler). The SIO sound is maybe a little quiet, but that might be because of a lot of things: my crappy monitor, the cheap grabber clips I used so I could hurry up and test it, the only tape I could find that has SIO sound (Invitation to Programming 1), or my deteriorating hearing. Conclusion: It's adorable and functional. I love it! Thanks to everyone who made it possible! It was also very nice to meet orpheuswaking at the VCF. He gave me a tour of his display and explained a bunch things I'd hadn't seen before. -Joe -

SO cool! Are you selling them at VCF Midwest? Will you be there both days? -
Atari 400 sound mod for UAV?
Smokeless Joe replied to Smokeless Joe's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Oop! I keep forgetting about SIO audio. I'm going to VCF Midwest, so if you're not selling them before then, I'd definitely buy one there. -
These are original disks. I'm kinda hoping to upload at least one of them to the C64 Preservation Project.

Atari 400 sound mod for UAV?
Smokeless Joe replied to Smokeless Joe's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Of course, I still want one of orpheuswaking's boards. If they are available in time for VCF Midwest, does that mean you'll sell them there?
