The Official Sega Saturn Thread!
Cafeman replied to Steven Pendleton's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I bought all mine BITD and often I got them used, so not that expensive! I'm pretty sure I paid $40 to import Radiant Silvergun, for example. I just noticed, a few of my used Saturn games have "Video Game Exchange / Do not remove! Ruins CD games" stickers on the label side. I've always been afraid to use goo-gone to remove them! -
The Official Sega Saturn Thread!

I've owned it since 1995. Got about 60 games for it (no burners either). Love the Saturn! I don't have much else to say right now! https://atariage.com/forums/blogs/entry/16602-im-on-a-saturn-kick/ https://atariage.com/forums/blogs/entry/16618-im-on-a-saturn-kick-2/ https://atariage.com/forums/blogs/entry/16637-me-and-saturn/ https://atariage.com/forums/blogs/entry/13203-daytona-cce-vs-daytona-ce/ -

Formula Retro Racing (Virtua Racing Clone on Steam)
Cafeman replied to Reaperman's topic in Modern Console Discussion
First i've heard of this. Watching the video, the car is going 250+ KPH, but the sense of speed isn't really there like in VR. Or it it just me who thinks this? -
I just came in here to say Space Dungeon is excellent
Cafeman replied to unoclay's topic in Atari 5200
Some have stated 7800 Robotron is better than the 5200 version. I'm not sure I ever played the 7800 version to compare - why do you prefer 5200 > 7800 Robotron? -

More to See On Level Three, etc Agreed and I doubt you'll find anyone here to argue against the game, it is a lot of fun and wasn't on any other systems as far as I can recall. I always loved the pixel carnage as you work on a bigger enemy and it sprays apart. I share your feelings for 5200 Robotron too. It seemed pretty fantastic BITD, but now I am annoyed by its clunky movement and control , always causing cheaper deaths than the coin-op version. So, it is fun, but trying to get a high score is frustrating. -
I like your idea, but " Atari " forbade the use of any 2600 Adventure visual elements, so I gave up on using duck dragons a long time ago. I'm still following the rules, just in case. Plus that would be more work, the game is basically done.

Good Video, IJH. You seem so pleased and excited by the game and you aren't alone! It is amazing and looks to be a lot of fun. -

How do you play an ARM-supported game ROM on real hardware? Is there an ARM flash cart? I am very out-of-it with the 2600 scene. -

Dreamcast controller: Was it any good?
Cafeman replied to IntelliMission's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I owned several VMUs. 2 stock white ones, the 4X one, then I got blue, green and red ones. Now I must search through them to find which one had the save file I need. It is pretty cool that you can plug in 2 into one controller. If only they held more data. GCN Wind Waker could be played 2 player in conjunction with a GBA which had a Tingle character mode loaded into it. That was better than any use of a DC VMU. The tamagotchi style Chao games that came with Sonic Adventure games seemed cool at first but pretty limited in what they were. -
Dreamcast controller: Was it any good?
Cafeman replied to IntelliMission's topic in Classic Console Discussion
It was ok. I liked analog triggers for racing games. 3D stick was far more accurate than the Saturn 3D wand, but my thumb would slip off at times. I can use the dpad just fine, but it was small (not as bad as GCN dpad) and I think it wears out if memory serves. My hand would hurt using the DC controller but that happens with other controllers too. It was not ideal for any 2D fighting games. I wish I had bought those FT fighting pads instead of playing fighters with the stock , I hated to use triggers for a punch or kick. I did like the plug in rumble, which was new back then. Did not care about the VMU and screen, which didnt have enough save memory and ate batteries, and there wasn't 1 game that used it in a way I cared about. -
I can't remember the last time I was so pleasantly surprised at a reveal. Robotron is one of my all-time faves and I never imagined somebody would try, and succeed, such a faithful and competent port to 2600! I suppose after seeing stuff like Zookeeper, I should not have been so shocked, but I was. Even knowing it is using the extra ARM processing to be possible, it is still jaw dropping to see this so well done on a 2600. I guess any of the early 80s coinop games is truly possible. Well done, Champ Games team.

My first game years ago was all Antic e too. Come to think of it ... my game also had clouds and lightning bolts! But no fairies or special moves. Did you have to add an LMS jump halfway down the screen to your overall Display List? I seem to remember I did because it crossed a page boundary in memory or something. Antic e takes up a lot of memory but is great for drawing per-pixel, unlike trying to draw using tiles/character sets which drives me nuts. I also enjoyed the zooming punch fist attack shown in the video.

AverageSoftware, thanks for the update and it looks like a fun new 5200 game. The anime-inspired artwork for the characters is in particular nice to look at. Did you make those using Antic4 characters (5 color mode), I wonder?

Atari 8-Bit/5200 Homebrew Completed/WIP in 2020
Cafeman replied to ZeroPage Homebrew's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Wow. Not only is there a nice looking interactive and scrolling ground level, but impressive multiplexed player sprite engine too, with nice color shading. -
Well, this idea was kind of a bust! I only got one response, so this is a bump just in case anybody is interested in drawing an image. I suppose this is another clue for me just to wrap the whole thing up and call it done!

I paid $22 and downloaded it.

I've been playing it today on PS4. It feels exactly like SOR games on Genesis. Control is spot on. Lots of fresh new things peppered in. It starts off on the easy side but the challenge ramps up. The visuals are superb! Like a higher rez Street Fighter 3rd Strike With shading and smoke FX. I played as 3 different characters so far and these are refreshingly different from one another! Fun if you loved 16 bit beatem ups. Strangely, I had to really search for it on the PS store, even a Search on its name didn't find it! I think I might have searched on Sega and finally found it. Great way to advertise a new game, NOT!

Wow, over 40 bucks. I played with the original one which likely didn't even cost $10!

Memories of where and when you first played/saw this game
Cafeman replied to retrorussell's topic in Arcade and Pinball
Centipede was everywhere. I probably first saw it at a mall arcade in Johnstown PA. Or it could have been the Showbiz Pizza Palace arcade which I do remember playing Centipede there. I think the first bonus life was awarded at 12k or higher there. Not 10k. I was never very good at this game so it could be a real quarter-sucker if I kept playing it. I saw pictures of Kangaroo but didn't see an actual machine until it had been out a while. The arcade scene had started to dry up I think. We stopped at a CoGo's or 7 Eleven, and it was in the little side arcade room. I died quickly. But I played it on 5200 a lot more. Not a favorite of mine at all.
