What have you actually PLAYED tracker for 2020 (Season 13)
Cafeman replied to carlsson's topic in Classic Console Discussion
On Saturn collection: Arcade Bubbles - 30 minutes. I play rounds until I beat 200k. Arcade Robotron - 30 minutes. I play rounds until I beat 200k. Saturn Manx TT - 15 minutes. The horizon tilt in first-player-perspective mode is WILD! Saturn NiGHTS - 60 minutes. Got a bunch of A's. Saturn Virtua Racing - 30 minutes. Played a while, then I'd had enough. -
Agreed. The A8 version is unplayable to me due to the slow fill time. Was the A8 version coded in ASM I wonder? The 5200 version dropped to a slightly lower-rez graphics mode IIRC, but it is also completely reprogrammed. 5200 Qix is one of my favorite games on the system! ALSO - you can make the same observation comparing the original A8 Dig Dug and 5200 Dig Dug.

I've been playing various levels to QA test game, after making a few tweaks in April. Well, I don't understand why, but the screen-rolling glitch is sometimes back. I should dig out my Atari 800XL (I test on the XEGS) and make sure it happens on that hardware too. I've never seen an Atari 8-bit game have its screen roll before, not like 2600 games where it is far more common. For me, it sometimes happens at the end of a won game. When you bring the chalice into the Kingdom 1 castle, a little tune plays. Then it loads the end-game Rankings / Stats screen . Between these screens it sometimes rolls. I haven't really added anything recently in that area that would have adversely affected timing, and I don't think I am performing code any differently. But there it is - the screen kind of half-rolls once (and not always). This just reared its ugly head in 2020 for the first time, and I thought an extra JSR WAITVB statement fixed it. Its a mystery but there's got to be a simple reason. Other than that I don't see anything troubling in the game. There are 1 or 2 little visual sprite-clutter visual bugs that can happen (also happened on 5200 version) but these don't happen frequently, and are cleaned up as soon as you change screens, so I have lived with them.

Wow, that many Saturn vids already. I have subscribed to that channel for a while now and greatly enjoy his content. All Sega and Saturn fans need to to subscribe and watch his stuff! I bet I already watched most of those Saturn vids, but I will check them out again soon, too. When I get notified about a new SLX video , I can't wait to watch it. I also enjoy how each video ends with music from Genesis Batman: The Movie game - it just seems to fit so well. I've been playing a lot of Saturn this month. It started because of a desire to play Panzer Dragoon / Zwei , since I can't play the new remake. Then I got into various other games in my collection like SRC and Shinobi Legions. -

Yes, I am thinking of DC games, never mind. -

I own a Skeleton Warriors game, it's a hack and slash platformer I think, but I never really played it past level 1. Powerstone 2 is pretty fun as a multi player beat am up with some platforming. EDIT- no, this is a Dreamcast game. -

Sega Rally Championship is my favorite racer. Also Daytona CCE or better yet the Japanese version Daytona CE. Manx TT is marred by rubber band opponents and only 2 tracks, but is looks and controls great especially with the 3D pad. Virtua Racing does not have the same fast coin op accurate feel that the 32X version has but I still enjoy it. A lot of tracks and different cars to drive. Its worth playing career mode and getting to the end once. EDIT - I just replayed it. I can't recommend it unless you view it as a cart racer. Sluggish visuals and control. Fighters Megamix has nearly unending content and is well programmed. It's a mix of VF and Fighting Vipers but also with VF3 moves and loads of bonus characters. I've been playing Shinobi Legions and it's a lot of fun. Burning Rangers and Nights are both very unique games by Sonic Team. -
These time travelers ugh!

Meanwhile, another little tweak ... when playing Special Difficulty Levels, the dragons will eventually come back to life (same as 5200 version but it takes more time for them to revive) . They will now revive into a random new dragon each time now. In the 5200 version, they kind of had a zombie dragon look but now they have a distinct more unified look. Meet the Silver Dragon: - another tweak I put in recently - if you pause (via the OPTION button, or SpaceBar), you can Un-Pause with a joystick button press. - The only real final tweak I want to add will be some new tapestry images from whoever submits some ideas! After this tweak in early May, I'll post a final demo to play.

Bump for visibility, and thanks TIX for those well drawn tapestry images.

In the spirit of the original "Ye Olde Adventure II Contest" from 2006-2007 back when Adventure II for Atari 5200 was being created .... Thy newe and briefe Adventure II XE Contest ! The only prize here is that your artistic creation could get included into the final version of Adventure II XE! And a reference in the Manual! This contest ends May 5 2020 at 11:59 PM -- 2 weeks from today. Since I have some time and some free memory left, I recently fooled around with different graphical images on the game's castle tapestries. My plan is to only replace the center tapestry (which always shows a duck dragon, currently) in the various Green, Fire, and Ice Castle Tapestries rooms, just for a surprise and some variety. But I am not a gifted artist! Here are the specifications: The shield portion backdrop (red in the attached example) is made of 15 total tiles -- 3 tiles horizontally by 5 tiles vertically. Character tiles are 4 pixels wide (double-width) by 8 pixels vertically each. But due to the borders of the image, the image can only be 10 double-width pixels horizontally and about 30 max pixels on the vertical plane. Keep within the red borders as you see in the pictures. The image should be all black pixels over top the red background. You can also use the 2nd color which is gold in the example shown, or a mix of black and gold pixels (like the sword/key tapestry shown). The actual colors change with every Tapestries screen so that is why I'd prefer you mostly just use the black pixels. Since I would like it to be a surprise, I won't tell you what ones I pick to put into the game. Gamers will have to discover this by playing the future version of the game and exploring. It will be some work for me to translate your images into the character hex values too, so I won't include more than 5 in the end. Food for thought ideas: castle items, kingly items, practical items .. crown, ring, castle flag, armor, various weoponry or tools, or a mug for example. Or images that might remind you of 80s gaming perhaps, Like cherries... I'm not sure if there is a nice pixel drawing utility to simplify things. I use the old "ANTIC4.EXE" utility that Calamari (Jeffry Johnson I think?) coded in the early 2000's, and I have to use DOSBOX to run it in Windows 10 which has become a pain. So if anyone wants to draw a new Tapestry image, you can post it here. It will be fun to see submissions even if they can't all be used.

Both. Note - after googling around to see if I had invented the memory, it is possible that the coin-op Arcade version of Super Mario Bros was released AFTER the NES game. I know I played it in the 80's and I've seen a few cabinet pics online too. But there are so many newer homegrown multi-system cabs now that it was difficult to find an authentic 80's pic.

I played Saturn and PS Tomb Raider through a few times, too. My gameplay: Sega Saturn. Shinobi Legions - 120 minutes. Can't beat it yet, but I've learned how to play better including doing the roll which is not documented in the manual from what I've seen! Quarter circle up/forward. Follow it with a sword stab! Sega rally - 60 minutes. Got 1st place , but only 2nd place on the bonus Lakeside race. This is one of the most fun racers for me. Atari 5200 Kaboom - 20 minutes. -
605. Not easy in emulation. Need the CX52!

Lower back pain for over a month now, not getting better on its own. Like a knife in my lumbar region. Walking around hunched over at times like a cliche old man! Not sure how this happened but the sedentary stay at home lifestyle, and sitting for a living at work, probably the reasons. Looks like i need to get physical therapy in the middle of this pandemic.
-
Sorry to hear it. I'd definitely consult a doctor, get PT if needed,...A guy I used to work with had back pain and said CBD Oil was the cure for him.
-
Yeah i had an MRI scan done and they found a bulged disc. The stabbing pain which makes it feel very fragile is from the disc pushing on a nerve. Move in the wrong direction and feels like someone is inserting the knife. The injection i had helped bring down the swelling and this allows the disc to re-seat because the inflammation goes down. Problem is whether you have medical insurance because i hear they can cost a bit. Mine was covered by workcover. Sad thng is with the pain still there however not extreme the GP says it's a forever weakened area and is more likely to happen again. Im still waiting for the virus stuff to die down before they continue further with PT. Good luck, i know how uncomfortable and agonizing it can be mate

Good luck with that. I have an extra vertebrae in the lumbar area that partially fused on right side.

I loaded Shinobi Legions and have been relearning it for that past 2 nights. I have not played it for a LONG TIME. Probably not for 10 years or more. Quick take: it is pretty awesome and fun! Its funny to me, I remember taking note of the game's load times when it was new. Well , compared to Genesis cartridge gaming, yes there are some load times, but after playing modern games for so many years, Shinobi Legions' load times now seem negligible to me! The game is more fun, with better control, than I had thought. But last night, it locked up on the first boss. Then no disc would load - it appeared my Saturn would not spin the disc anymore or something. Was the laser gone? Did some mechanical doodad finally wear out? So I unplugged it, shot high pressure component-cleaning air into it, and then turned it upside down and did it again. BANG my Saturn was working fine again. Not sure how or why. I have been relearning patterns and subtleties of gameplay. This Shinobi plays differently than the Genesis games, even the ninja powers aren't accessible in the same way as before. There are different sword swipes you can pull off - press up + button, or up/right diagonal + button, or forward with button .. all different swipes. The animation is very good and overall its quite fun ... and HARD. I got to the boss on the mountaintop , after climbing hand-over-hand on vines and killing massive snakes and avoiding cannons. I can't remember if I ever got past this level or not, its like a new game that I've never played before. The in-game music is excellent. And although I used to mock the FMV's, I now find them very entertaining in a 'cheaply made' bad sense, and yet there are a few surprises in the cut scenes. One of them is when all the ninjas and a girl actually jump / spectacularly dive off a cliff into the sea - with real people! The cliff looks to be over 20 feet high!

Hair grooming during self isolation.
Cafeman commented on OldSchoolRetroGamer's blog entry in OldSchoolRetroGamer's Bloggy Nonsense
My wife ordered scissors and clippers when this started. I was hoping for a postal debacle and that these would never be delivered. But they did come. She has never cut my hair so who knows what I'll look like. My hair poker straight with a little bit of feathering, not curly at all. I'll get her to practice on my son first! Anyway, your "after" / shaved beard pic, you look insanely outraged that your hair has been cut! HA HA! -

Sega Saturn- Tempest 2000 , 30 minutes. Williams Arcade Classics, 2 hours. (Bubbles 1 hour, Robotron 1 hour). -
I would think the most limiting factor to CSB would be having only 1 button.

I couldn't watch live but flipped through the video this morning. Thanks for the link, pretty cool to hear Steve's stories. -
Agreed about those excellent pads. I'm not a big RPG gamer, but I did own and played through both Panzer Dragoon Saga and Shining Force III bitd, but sold them off at great profit eventually. Now as you'd expect, I sometimes wish I still owned them. Oh well, there are other games for me to enjoy on Saturn. Plus I can go on YT and watch long plays of these games and enjoy them that way.
