  1. I have a dumb question: Is the Atari ST joystick port pinout the same as the 2600's?  They look similar, but I know that doesn't always mean they are.

What is the best joystick to use with the ST?  Mine came with a Gravis Pad which is ok, but some games work best with a real joystick.

Hmm, I'm not sure - I know that you can use joysticks between the 8bit line of computers and the STs with no problem.

Its a very subjective thing, but I like a Wico BOSS or the Wico model with the ergonomic hand grip.

Best Electronics sells some pretty good joysticks, although they might be considered a little pricey.

    HTHs. :-)

If they work with 8-bit joysticks then they work with 2600 sticks. But do ST games make use of more than one button?

No. I have never run into a single game that did.

Commodore's Amiga (how dare I mention that name here!), on the other hand, started supporting extra buttons with the release of the CD32 console and the A1200.

  2. Congrats on getting a Mega STE, I'm quite jealous.

One thing I've always wondered is if there are any Mega STE only games?  I know there are STE only games, but those also work on the 1040STE.  Did any games actually require a Mega STE?  Somehow I would doubt it since it wasn't a very popular ST.

Well I dont think it would happen as the Mega STE is just a STE but with a faster clock. So any game that works on the 1040STE also runs on the Mega STE but just faster if enabled.

  3. There are three different SC1224 monitors, the JVC, Samsung and Goldstar. I think the JVC is the best but oddly does not output sound well on newer ST computers (STE and Mega STE), the Samsung is the boxy Mega monitor and is nice but seems the knobs sieze up making it hard to adjust, and the Goldstar is the common one that looks like the SC124 mono monitor. All are fine for a ST really. I own all three, along with a SC1435 and PCT1426 :)

  4. If you are not seeing a logo and info at top left of screen you have TOS 2.05, this is what I had in mine. I upgraded to TOS 2.06, yes TOS 2.05 does not show anything on screen and will seem to take forever to startup with a white screen if you do not hit the spacebar.

Also the TT and Mega STE keyboards are identicle except the TT one is off white and the Mega STE is gray.

I ended up getting raped by a dealer when I ordered a new TT keyboard, but it was cool as it came new in its original box! I also got a new top case and off white TT mouse, and my TT looks new now.

  5. The reason TOS came on disk first, was the 520ST was rushed to get released. They wanted to release it before Commodore was to release their Amiga 1000. The OS was not done yet, and they wanted to offer it with a disk based OS, that way when TOS 1.0 came out the user can just upgrade with new ROMs. Commodore did the same thing with the A1000.

  6. OK I have had some success in copying protected titles! I have a lot of original disks and some of my disks are going bad. No surprise as they are over 20 years old. I was looking to make working backups since I have a lot of DSDD disks, and that way if my original goes back I have a backup! I used ACopy and ProCopy 1.80 and it seems to work with most games. I made backups of The Pawn, Guild of Thives, Road Runner, Indiana Jones, and some others so far. I do have a few disks that are bad: Ghosts 'N Goblins, Lords of Conquest, Leathernecks. Anyone have these originals that would not mind making a backup copy for me? I don't feel like waiting for the next century when Caps will be able to help me. Thanks.
