  1. The Krocodile is much nicer.

How do you know ? Your device is not finished, so a comparison is difficult at this point. Maybe this device can support Supercharger mode, when it is finished.

    It has a great interface

Thanks ! I could think that some people are willing to spent time to

create such an interface for your device, too. Maybe you are bored some rainy day and create it yourself :-)

    and loads games quickly.

Yes, its quick, but with USB you could (at least in theory) compensate that you have to download more code to the device.

You need to know which bankswitching type goes with which games.  Nothing is done automatically.

Only a question of the interface. Take a stella.pro file, and calculate the binaries MD5.There is not much more to do.

Armin has spent over two years (that I know about) working on the Krocodile.  It has been tested and proven true.  This Chimera cart that I am working on is just for fun.

Yes, but partly because I did not know a lot about programmable logic, when I started with the project. Its easier if you know how to do it :-)

  2. I'm surprised there is a problem with Berzerk VE, since that isn't a dump, but the actual binary that was used to make cartridges.  At least it should be.

    ..Al

I had a bad time with Berzerk VE until I had a closer look at the binary ...

The version I have makes trouble on real hardware. Sometimes it starts and sometimes it doesn't. If you are lucky it starts in the correct bank ...well, only if you are lucky. Unfortunately lots of hackers do not take into account how real hardware behaves ...

  3. Vern !

    >Any thoughts on the copper pour?

I would copper pour top and bottom layer. AFAIK the main reason

for copper pouring is noise reduction. I do it in all my designs.

I can not tell you what the difference is, but I am almost sure it will

    help.

  4. I have thought about this a little. Unfortunately I could not test the cart on the 7800 because I don't own one.

But there is one possible solution that you could try to get the multicart working. Connect the external power supply to the cart and then turn on the 7800. Can you please tell me if it works if you do that ?

    >What's really odd...Sir Lancelot...The game doesnt work at all on the

    >2600 via the Kroc cart...whether multicart of as a single game. BUT,

    >Sir Lancelot in the Kroc cart by itself works fine on the 7800.

Some games, especially hacks that were never released in cart form, do not start up in all banks. They need to be started in a fixed bank. But the Krokodile Cart can not handle this if you only download the binary. However, I can fix such binaries if you send them to me. You will get back a binary that can be downloaded to Krokodile Cart and works in the 2600. I have to add frame code that makes the init such that it works on real hardware. Some Carts had internal circuitry to ensure a certain startup bank. This is not emulated by the Kroc Cart.

Emulators clear 2600 memory before startup. The Krokodile cart does not. I am not sure what the 7800 does, but if it clears RAM and registers before startup, then a binary that requires this will run fine on the 7800 but not on the 2600 (or only if you are lucky). I can fix this with my frame code as well, so if a rom really doesn't work, send it to me and you get back a fixed rom :-)

  5. is there a way to compile multiple atari ROM files into one .bin file with a menu? im sure there's some software out there but i can't seem to find any...

The Krokodile Commander can do this. But the constructed ROM Image will only run on the Krokodile Cartridge. It is like Thomas said, multicarts need a special bankswitching. The Krokodile Commander supports the way the Krokodile Cart is handling multicart images. But almost every multicart hardware does things a bit differently. You will not find any software that can compile multicart images without a special target hardware in mind.

  6. I'm enjoying the Krokodile cart, and I hope everybody who wants one can get one. Still, I have a concern about the hardware:

I don't know much about electricity, but I'm in the habit of turning off the PC before connecting anything out of a vague understanding that it is safer for the hardware. The KC is the first hardware that I connect and disconnect frequency. How risky is it to do so while the PC is on?

There is no risk at all. You can connect and disconnect it as often as you want - computer on or off.

  7. I went to the store section here and tried to order a Krocodile cart and couldn't. Is there some secret I don't know about?

    Thanks

No secret. You can currently not order it. I will make more carts soon. All I made are already sold and I just need some time for the next batch ...

  8. I have made a new version of the Krokodile Commander. Please check my site for updates:

    http://www.arminvogl.de/KrokodileCartridge/

You will always find the latest version here.

The Krokodile Commander on the CD only searches for the device on COM1 and COM2. Version 1.02 also searches on Com3. I will put Version 1.03 online soon, which will search for the device on Com1 - Com5

I still need some feedback about Windows 98. Even if you don't have the Cartridge but are running Windows 98, please try to install the software on your machine and give me some feedback via PM.

  9. If the database is not being modified then the program can be changed to open it in read-only mode.  I had to do that for a project at work that read the database from a CD.  Here's the VB code I used to do that:

' must open EXCLUSIVE and READ-ONLY to open DB off CDROM

         ' (EXCLUSIVE is Options=TRUE)

Set gAccessDB = gAccessWS.OpenDatabase(DatabaseName, True, True)

    Thanks, I will try that ! :)

  10. Does the file "VCSBASE.MDB" exist in the same directory as the program?

    If not, try this:

    - Open Notepad (or whatever text editor you use)

    - Save the blank file as "VCSBASE.MDB" and place it in the same directory as the progam.

    ...

    That's just a guess, though.

No, don't create the file yourself ! Copy it from the CD or download it from my site. The application can not create it. It is part of the application and has to be copied to the drive together with the Krokodile Commander.

  11. The program won't load.

    I get a message

The Database '.VCSBASE.MDB' could not be opened

I tried loading the program from the cd, then copied it onto my HD, then tried both ways on another computer...nothing....

    Any ideas ?

Both the application and the database have to be in the same directory on your harddrive. Then you should be able to start the application. If you can't find the database on your CD, please go to http://www.arminvogl.de/KrokodileCartridge/

and download it from there. You can also download the Krokodile Commander from there. If you are still having trouble, please PM me :-)

  12. You all know that Cart Commander has one with his version of prices included in it.  But this is not FREE WARE and requires payment.

I used some Java tools and sucked down the info from this site for 2600, 5200, and 7800 once and put them in a comma seperated values (CSV) type file (for use with my own personal Java Cart inventory software).

I have made an Access Database out of Stella .PRO files. It may not be what you are looking for, but it already contains SOME info:

    http://www.arminvogl.de/KrokodileCartridge/Revision1.0/vcsbase.zip

I want to know why everyone has there a new CRC type key for rom signatures? the CC2ROMDB has it own version of CRC16 and this Stella one has MD5 and the CRC in zip files is another. I know bitch, bitch.

I used MD5 because I am lazy and wanted to be able to use the stella.pro files to import info into the database :D

  13. I asked Atmel support for a typical endurance of their flash chip and here is the answer:

    Dear Armin:

The typically endurance for the AT29C040A is 100K cycles. However, we

    only guarantee 10K cycles.

    Victor

    :D :D

  14. We are currently not able to ship more devices than have already been preordered. To be honest I am a bit behind with production. I don't want people to pay and then have to wait too long. But more devices will be made soon after we have shipped all preorders

As soon as they really arrive at AtariAge and are ready for shipping, you will be able to add them to your basket.

Our first priority is now to ship the preordered devices.
