  1. RetroTINK 5x-Pro: overkill for a UAV-modded 2600? https://www.retrotink.com/product-page/5x-pro

    1. Atariboy

      Atariboy

In a world that thinks Nintendo invented videogames in 1985, I'm afraid folks like you and I will have to wait a while for the right person to take a chance on this before we learn how well this is suited to classic American consoles.

Past Retrotink products though have worked well for the most part with consoles like the Atari 2600, so I'm optimistic that the Retrotink 5X will be well suited for systems like the Atari 2600/5200/7800, Intellivision, etc.

      cybercylon

I wonder how well the older consoles would work with any Retrotink product with an RF demodulator. Yes, one could use a VCR, but a demodulator is less bulky.

Yeah, I love my 2X-Pro, but I'm definitely not dropping the cash for this until someone tests it with a 2600 and only then if there's a noticeable upgrade. I think the 2X-Pro already makes the picture gorgeous on my modern TV, but we'll see!

  2. I'm usually not the type to fall in love w/ subscription services, but Game Pass Ultimate has won me over. Nice to play Xbox w/ my brother online every other weekend. Anyone else?

    1. wongojack

      wongojack

Yes - I went in skeptical and now I love it.

  3. So overwhelmed by work right now. Looking forward to some Golf With Your Friends on my Xbox and Chopper Command on my 2600 this weekend.

  4. Had a wonderful xmas with my gf and cat. Couldn't see my folks this year but we had a warm, quiet day together. Can't wait to try out my Switch Pro controller!

      digdugnate

The Pro Controller is so good. so so good.  (imo the best one for the Switch)

  5. One thing I love about my 2600 is the relative simplicity of the games: they lend themselves to short work breaks rather than demand 2-hour game sessions, as many modern RPGs tend to (which I do love, but they take me 8-10 months to finish—looking at you, Skyrim).

      LS650

I hear people talking about how the latest game is "good for 30+ hours of gameplay" and think - how the heck do you play the same game for 30 hours and not get bored out of your skull?  I find most games, I'll fire one up for 20 minutes and then I want to play something entirely different.

    2. desiv

      desiv

That's one of the things I love about Retro in general.  Lots of quick fun games.  I just haven't been able to find time to get into the more involving games.  Modern or even retro...  Even the older RPGs I loved, I haven't been able to find the time to dig in to...  That said, I did just get Nox Archaist for the Apple II, so I will have to try to find some time...  But as great as I am sure it is, it wouldn't surprise me to if I end up playing some space invaders clones in short bursts more... ;-)

  6. Winter storm coming into the Northeast! Better get an extra round of Chopper Command in tonight in case the power goes...

@Atarian7 Only about half a foot, bu the last round of storms we had in the summer knocked the power out twice in two weeks since so many trees are near power lines. Some snow would make everything look way prettier, which I guess I'll take at this point in 2020 over a night of not being able to play Atari, lol.

    3. Atarian7

      Atarian7

We lost power for about 5 hours a few weeks ago when there wasn't any storm in the area.   This happened a couple of years ago too, but it was the middle of the night.

    4. Bixler

      Bixler

@Atarian7 Oh no! I'd be pretty annoyed if there wasn't any discernible reason for it.

  7. Only ten days until Christmas—amazing how this month has flown by. Happy holidays to you and yours!

  8. My UAV-modded 2600 arrived. S-video into my RetroTINK 2x-Pro is breathtaking. ? So, SO happy with this upgrade! Gonna be a fun, beautiful holiday of Atari.

  9. Just beat Bowser in Super Mario Odyssey. SMO has entered my personal top 10 ever, easily. Absolutely brilliant platformer, and this post-game content could keep me occupied for a couple of months. Wow!

Time to shift gears to an RPG for a change of pace, though: Ys VIII.

    1. mickmuze

      mickmuze

      Agreed, was an incredible experience

That game's theme song is on my list of all-time favorite Video Game songs.

    3. bluejay

      bluejay

I beat bowser the first time a couple years ago and reached the dark side of the moon a few weeks after that. I couldn't find enough powermoons to reach the darker side and I got sick of just wandering around so I just restarted the game. Finding all 999 is going to take 294792384798 years.

  10. Are there any good podcasts that focus on or at least heavily cover 2nd-gen gaming? I'm going to give The Atari 2600 Game by Game podcast a go—any others I should be aware of?

  11. Awaiting a UAV-modded system to give a whirl with my RetroTINK-2X Pro after I finish grading my students' finals! And once I finish selling off the remainder of my library I'll never touch again I can finally splurge on some AA homebrews! Should be a pretty alright holiday. ?

      jaybird3rd

I'm grading finals, too.  Fun times.

  12. I have an AV-modded 2600 Jr. and a RetroTink 2X-Pro on the way! ?

    1. DrVenkman

      DrVenkman

I have a RetroTink-2X Pro as well. It provides very nice output but it's essentially just a 2X scaler. Many games work and look great but there are some oddities. Some Atari titles do not produce a "clean" or very steady 240 scanline output signal so some carts do not work properly when displayed though the RetroTink, as I discovered just today. For instance, I found that both Atari's Battlezone and Activision's Starmaster do not work with my TV through the RetroTink - I get a "Resolution Not Supported" message from my 2013 Samsung LED. Different sets might give different results, of course.

    2. Bixler

      Bixler

Thanks for sharing your experience! I plan on using a couple other consoles with the RetroTink but I'll keep that in mind for my Atari gaming w/ my Harmony Encore. Fingers crossed I don't run into any issues.

    3. DrVenkman

      DrVenkman

Sure. My Genesis looks very good through it, as does my 7800 and 5200. Of course, I haven't tested all my my 7800 or 5200 games, nor have I tried more than a dozen or 2600 games. Most of the 2600 games look great but some are trouble. I've emailed the developer tonight to see if he could do some testing with 2600 games to see about fixing sync/scanline issues in a future firmware update. Hopefully he'll decide to try.

  13. Quick question: is a bog-standard AV- or S-video-modded 2600 + the RetroTink 2x Pro the best plug-n-play solution for 2600 on my 4k TV? https://www.retrotink.com/product-page/retrotink-2x-pro

If you want the best picture quality, an OSSC along with a 2600RGB-modded system is the way to go.

    3. Bixler

      Bixler

That was my original plan until I saw the price for the OSSC and realized the price of an RGB mod kit + the labor cost of paying someone here to do it for me... ;) The RetroTink 2x Pro seems like a budget option even if I'm taking a hit with the quality compared to the OSSC. Thanks to you too though. I suppose what you proposed literally is the best option, I just don't have the money or the know-how (I'm guessing having someone on these forums do it would run me about $150).

If you're just playing on a HD TV, I second the Retron 77 route with community update. It's quite solid. If you're capturing, avoid it. I couldn't get my capture card to pick up audio from it.

  14. Loving the new website. Is there an AtariAge discord server?

    1. RockyRaccoon

      RockyRaccoon

      I don't think AA has it's own Discord. But I know an AtariAge member runs this server here;

Hey Bix. Long time no see bro. What's new with you? Hows that CMVS Neo-Geo unit these days. 8^)

  15. Is there any conceivabl reason to have an HDMI modded 2600 to play on my HDTV? Or should I just go with an AV modded system? A CRT won't be an option in my new apartment I'm afraid.

    1. digdugnate

      digdugnate

sometimes you just gotta do what you have the ability for- i have an AV-modded 2600 in our bedroom on a $99 el cheapo flat panel. :) I think you'd be good for retro goodness either AV or HDMI.

    2. Keatah

      Keatah

If you don't mind cheap emulator stuff, get a Retron 77 with native HDMI.

Funny, before I read any comments, I was thinking get a RetroN 77 and A/V modded 2600!

  16. Was just having some dried mango slices while playing Berserk on my 2600. What do you snack on while playing?

Water or soda. Games without pauses are not conducive to snacking.

@JDTAY Angband is a lot of fun, but my favorite pick-up-and-play roguelike would have to be Brogue.

Vacations and short get-aways are fun, but I am always happiest when home.

  19. Anyone have any favorite beers/ciders you can only really get in England, or that are not readily available in the US? Would love to get some recs. I've been loving Northern Monk, Abbot Ale, and Old Thumper.

If you have a Total Wine near where you live (large chain liquor store), you can order anything, from any country that isn't currently in a war-ravaged state.

Forgot to also include North Korea, Cuba, and countries with mandatory shariah law as no-gos for Total Wine.

  20. 2600 emulation while abroad is a necessity, but it just isn't the same as playing on my CRT at home. :(

HA! It does work like a charm but I guess I just miss my big 'ol fat Sony CRT at home, and my comfy chair, my preferred beer, my controllers, and my girlfriend competing with me for high scores. :)

I never really bought music cassettes. I bought vinyl records right up until about 1987 then went to CD's.

    4. BassGuitari

      BassGuitari

I only use cassettes for classic computers that supported/required them. Just bought a NOS pack of TRS-80 C-10 tapes this weekend, in fact.

I've never had any problems with homebrews...But regular Galaxian doesn't work for me on 2600...It works fine on a 7800 however...

  24. Thankfully it's cooler this evening than yesterday. I can't stand boiling hot nights.

  25. Been following a bit of this PS4 Pro vs. Xbox One Scorpio chatter today... didn't realize people cared so much about system specs. What about the damn games?!

    1. Skippy B. Coyote

      Skippy B. Coyote

Word my brother. And besides, how many people actually own HDR enabled 4K televisions!? They both seem to be systems marketed solely to the uber wealthy and spoiled kids with rich parents. These are not systems for the average gamer.

    2. masschamber

      masschamber

the biggest number I care about is that 310 watts, hikes that is some crazy power consumption. What is the max rating on the psu, 350? 400?

frankly the thing that was so great about the ps4 was the modest size and power consumption. If the ps4pro is that bad how crazy is the xbone deluxe going to be

I'll stick with my original Xbox One, thanks. No plans to upgrade to a 4K TV anytime soon.
