22-year old here, soon to be 23. My interest in Atari stems from a few interrelated factors:
-
Lack of time. As my days grew more stressful, life got busier in college, and I got a girlfriend, the time to play longer, more involved video games evaporated pretty quickly. On a tight budget, I figured what the hell – I've always liked arcade games and shooting for high scores, and I've always enjoyed older video games, so I might as well give Atari a shot. Glad I did, too: I've gotten many hours of enjoyment out of the system that bennybingo sold to me for cheap years ago (gorgeous little 2600 Jr.)
- Comic books and budget. With my lack of time also unfortunately came a lack of time to read longer novels. Also, as a humanities student, I was reading upwards of 400-500 pages a week of dense material. Given how tired I was at the end of each day, I started to turn to comic books to get a bit of reading in before bed. Now I'm totally in love with the medium, and I've read many dozens of fantastic stories contained in both Western comics and manga. In turn, given this new hobby, my budget for video games also dwindled to virtually nothing. 2600 games are generally dirt cheap compared to modern video games (even 3DS games are, what, $30-$40 a pop?!) While I use a Harmony Encore now and have sold nearly all of my old carts, so I'm not a "collector," the price is great for how much content you get with the Harmony.
-
High scores and comparative simplicity. While I still love a good story, I just don't have the time for RPGs or similarly involved, long games anymore – hence my growing interest in playing for a high score. Playing a 2600 game is so damn easy – press the "on" button, select a game from the Harmony menu, and you're off to the races with one button and a joystick. Manuals aren't even needed for many games; you can figure them out on your own pretty quickly. Well, that is, until you want to try some of the alternative game modes or really dig into the core of a game. Might have to hit up the AA manual archives for those.
Overall I'd say my tastes have changed as I have grown older, and I love firing up some tunes or a podcast and playing my 2600 for an hour or two to unwind at the end of the week. Timeless fun

Rodea is barely played, and looking for a good home.
$50 shipped CONUS. Note the tiny damage on the side of the casing. http://imgur.com/a/LCBxjSuper Smash Bros Melee is being let go to help fund my increasing interest in comic books; $48 shipped CONUS. http://imgur.com/a/HmvHm If you're interested in a GameCube system to go with it (no controllers unfortunately), I can see if I can dig it up and toss it in for a $65 bundle, shipped CONUS. -
Why stay away from the Wii U version? I'm assuming something having to do with the controls, but why's it so bad?
The Wii U version is a pretty different game from the Wii version. As is the 3DS version. The Wii version is pretty solid, but from what I've gathered the other two versions are bad – really, really bad.

I use a Harmony for commercially-released games and I will be picking up actual carts for homebrews from the AA store.

Need some cash to help fund some recent comic book purchases, so I'm looking to sell off a couple bundles!
First up: AV-modded ColecoVision system from our very own Yurkie, tested and working, complete with a pause button. Comes with AV cables and AC adapter. Asking $115 shipped within continental U.S. SOLDNext: Game Gear lot, tested and working. Pretty sure it was LCD modded, which would make the Game Gear ~$75 alone. Does not come with plastic cover that generally goes over the screen, but the screen itself is in good condition. Not interested in splitting up the bundle; great starter set! Asking $100 shipped within continental U.S.MOTHERBOARD ISSUE

I'm a huge fan of Soundodger+ on Steam. Great mixture of bullet hell + rhythm game.
StepMania is also solid.

I had to back out last time due to lack of cash, but these look gorgeous!

Sorry if I'm confused – do you currently own these and are entertaining offers? Or are you on the hunt for these?

I have yet to play any of the Fire Emblem games, but they're certainly on my list of games to eventually play.
Wrapping up Kirby Triple Deluxe right now, and I'm going to be diving into Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon soon.

I'm done with thrift stores and Goodwill. Everything is always picked clean by resellers, though occasionally I find something useful for my college dorm room.
I have way more luck at a used boom store that also carries DVDs, video games, and music. Great Wii and Xbox titles for $5-$10 sometimes. And their graphic novel section and prices are solid.

My CMVS is on Unibios 2.3. Is there any reason to eventually upgrade to the Omega CMVS in the future for the Unibios 3.2, along with the fact that it looks absolutely gorgeous? What differences could I expect outside of how it looks, since I would just run it through s-video anyhow?
Also, as per above, I'd be all over the Neo-Geo CD if I hadn't actually experienced those loading times in real life on a friend's system. I didn't believe him when he said it would br almost unbearable to fire up more than one NGCD game in a given hour versus starting numerous games instantly with carts throughout the night. Shrugged it off and didn't care until I realized we had spent 25+ mins waiting for a handful of games to load throughout the evening...

I traded in Animal Crossing New Leaf the other day for Monster Hunter 3 Ulti, the lack of online co op upsets me so I went and got 4. Put about 3 hours into it so far, and I enjoy it. Really looking forward to doing some online co op quests this evening!
I've been meaning to pick up Monster Hunter 4, it really seems like my kind of game. Just weary of the presumable time investment needed to accomplish anything in the game – isn't it like a lite-MMO in some respects? Much to my dismay I'll never have the time for an MMORPG again, lol.

Thank you so much to all who have kept this thread alive for so long -- namely Anthony.
After seeing so many of these awesome posts I sold off (still in the process of doing so...) much of my collection that won't see any use again to find my MVS collection!Metal Slug, Puzzle Bobble, Art of Fighting... so many awesome games that will provide years of enjoyment. Thanks to all! Here's to another two awesome years of Neo-Geo goodness!

I started up an Excel spreadsheet keeping track of all my scores as well; keep it up! The 2600 is awesome.

GameCube because of the Game Boy Player.
One of the primary reasons I've held onto mine, and why I'll be getting it replaced soon -- stuff is rattling around and making me nervous. Served me well for so many years though!

Agreed. I really think the Wii nailed motion controls, especially when they introduced Motion Plus with Wii Sports Resort. Fantastic stuff.
