Moded Atari 600XL freezing quite oftenly
repetto74 replied to repetto74's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
OK so PSU is ok, output is normal. Now I made another Memory test and this time the last two blocks are red and the Mem test will crash. I noticed the crash seems to start more or less around a same amount of time after a cold power up of the machine (IC heating too much?). Now i would like to know which IC's are involved in Ram management. Which multiplexer? edit : I opened the case to have a look inside and try to reseat all IC's. I noticed that one of the wiring used for the mod was in contact with a pin of one RAM chip and the insulation was melted. I may have caused a short circuit and hope I only damaged the RAM. The freeze is always popping out after a few minutes which may point to a IC malfunction due to overheat. Damned hope I did not screw the whole thing up! -

Hi Almerian Ok I will first check the output of The PSU. I will run the main test again to confirm the bad ram block. Those are fresh new rams installed for the mod to 64k. I doubt one is bad already. I will try to reseat all ic's also and luckily all are socketed. -

Hi Almerian, Well this 600xl was working perfect until I started playing with the SIO2SD. I do not know what could be wrong with the psu. What should I check exactly? I would like also to ask if there is any trick with the SIO2SD to not power off and on continuously each time I want to load another program. I do not think that cycling continuously power is very good for the components. -

Here is some pictures of the failure. Note that on the RAM test I had a total freeze on first try then it went till the end but with a red square popping up. -

Hi made some testing, the RAM and ROM test is giving a green flag. I have noticed that freezes comes a few minutes after powering up the machine. Which are the chips that could be involved in this? CPU, POKEY and MMU? -
Hi, My 600XL seems to randomly freeze when used with an SIO2SD reader. It can freeze while playing a game or when typing a Basic program. It does not seem to have an issue when used standalone. When freezing in Basic mode some strange patterns and characters may pop up. What this could be? In case of a bad chip is there any good chip reseller? I am in Europe. Thanks,

I have tested directly from the real 600XL machine using the SIO2SD reader and all is working now! Glad I can save my programs on a virtual disk
-
Hi Brenski OK that's all clear now!! It works! Sorry I was confused with the Disable Basic setting. Actually I have to enable it for the basic program to be written down and then disable it wen accessing the DOS menu :-) Thanks a lot for your help!
-
Ok I managed to format the disk now it has DOS booting up. So I can go back to Basic write down a program and save or shall I do it from DOS? I do not understand where shall I give the SAVE command. Straight from Basic It will give error 130 but from DOS how shall I save a basic program?
-
Million thanks Brenski I will give this a try it should be ok then!!

Ok so I managed to initialize a blank disk using DOS 3.0. Now what would be the next step? How do I copy dos on it? I have tried to save a program on it but having an error 130 so I assume the diskette cannot be used Is there a clear tutorial on how to make a disk usable to save programs on it?
-
Ok guys this sounds more clear. The thing is that I am a little bit newbie concerning Atari 8bit computing as I was more a C64 users in my childhood and there handling floppy disks was easier with CBM basic. I will try with spartados and format a blank image before trying to write anything on it :-)
-
Hi guys, I did not really catch up how to use a blank atari disk image with the SIO2SD reader. I have created a blank single density atr disk image using Atari800 emulator and copied on the SD card. Then leaving the D1 empty I power up my Atari 600xl and load the disk image into virtual drive D1. I made a simple basic program for testing but when I give the save command SAVE "D1:test.bas" I am getting an error 130. What is wrong then?
-
Hi Mclaneinc Yes sorry I was too quick on this one
-
Hi, I can't really figure out how to save on a virtual disk as explained by Dragonstomper. I always get an error 135 or 150 (?). The only possible solution is to save a state if I want to keep a program.

I mean it totally meet my expectation, quality is just great considering the age of those 8-bit machines. -

Just received the Tendak converter S-video/RGB to HDMI. This thing is really awesome, image quality looks really nice! I thing it does worth the price. Only doubt I have is concerning a color artifact. Does Donkey Kong display in dark pink on the original ? Have tested on a C64 and also very nice output but I do see some pink shades on white characters. Hope it is my old LCD display who did that. PS : I have checked with Donkey Kong cartridge and our favorite monkey has a brown color in there . I think it is fine then. Also on youtube Atari800 version of Donkey Kong Junior has DK in a violet color. Do not know why this choice it is interesting -

Well I have still to confirm the B&W video now. Problem is that I am using a bad video converter (crap sucking garbage from China) which is really faulty! When used with a ZX Spectrum I could see some washed out colors but not with the 600XL. But looking at this video now I may just see that color is there. I am waiting for a decent converter to confirm. PS : I do have the DIN video socket on the 600XL machine as this is a PAL version. -

Can I have the pinouts of the video din socket on the 600xl? Are these correct? http://atariage.com/forums/topic/87280-how-to-make-8-bit-av-cable/?hl=s-video+cable -

Hi Philsan Many thanks! I will most probably go for an SIO2SD reader then 😉 -
