  1. Heya atari2600land, we'll be featuring Castle of Doom on today's ZeroPage Homebrew livestream on Twitch at 2PM PT/5PM ET! Really looking forward to seeing how far we'll be able to get in the game. :-)

    Twitch Stream: https://www.twitch.tv/zeropagehomebrew/

    Other Games Today:
    - Kuru Kuru Tsuchinoko (WIP) by mojofltr
    - Simple Horizontal Shooter (WIP) by Random Terrain
    - Lost Cat (WIP) by Jared Gray West

EDIT: Here's the YouTube archive video of the live broadcast! We managed to finish EVERY level and it wasn't easy, that's for sure. Great game atari2600land! :-)

  2. Amazingly enough the burger parts are drawn exclusively with the playfield and I never would have guessed that by looking! The colours and movement as the burger parts fall don't give away that little secret at all.

The chef is drawn with P0 only and is drawn at a constant 30Hz

The enemies are drawn with P0 & P1 and seem to be drawn at 20Hz, 30Hz and once I even saw one drawn at 40Hz (3 out of 4 frames)

The enemies don't vary much in their frequency no matter if they share the same vertical screen space as other characters or not. With the right flicker management the character flicker could be reduced to zero (60Hz) when they don't occupy the same vertical space. For a very similar style of character size and screen layout Mappy by Champ Games should be looked at for it's incredible flicker management.

Amazing job splendidnut, this game is getting way better each iteration and going to be amazing when it's completed!

    - The flickering is pretty bad. Does it have to be THAT bad? Or is that because the players are also getting used to display the burger parts?

  3. No problem MemberAtarian, we let people know last night when we showed the game that it's not done yet and that this is an early version of it. We often show early builds of games on the stream so they can see great new homebrew that is coming out. :-)

Great job on the game, really looking forward to seeing new versions as they come out!

You know, it's not finished yet! There will be a new enemy, an easter egg and I have to code +1up as well!

  4. Tonight on ZeroPage Homebrew we have the EXCLUSIVE DEBUT of 'SPIES IN THE NIGHT 2'!

We will be debuting Jared Gray West's sequel to his 2017 Atari 2600 Homebrew noir game 'Spies in the Night' on ZeroPage Homebrew!! This time you play the twin brother of the spy from the first game and you're INSIDE the lighthouse planting the bombs!

  5. This looks and plays REALLY well MemberAtarianl! I'm looking forward to showing it live on ZeroPage Homebrew in an upcoming episode but the line count strays a lot from 262 (at various times to 263, 264, 267 and others) which would make the screen jump and cut out on non-CRT systems and through video capture hardware like mine.

Press ALT-L to have the line count on the screen on Stella and watch for the line count of 262 to jump into the red to see this in action or press ~ to go into debug mode and watch the number move frame by frame with the left joystick button pushed in below as I've done.

I'll keep an eye on this, great job!

EDIT: Never mind about the scanline comments, you know all about them. Sorry about that! :-)

  8. ZeroPage Homebrew will be attending PRGE 2018 and conducting interviews with a number of Atari 2600 homebrew developers and distributors including:

    • Albert Yarusso of AtariAge
    • John Champeau of Champ Games (programmer of Lady Bug, Conquest of Mars, Mappy, Wizard of Wor + more)
    • Nathan Tolbert (programmer of Anguna, Robo-Ninja Climb, Quadtari)
    • Dan Kitchen (programmer of Crackpots, Ghostbusters, Double Dragon, Ikari Warriors and the upcoming homebrew games Keystone Kapers II & Bon Voyage)

Please let me know if there are any other Atari 2600 homebrew developers or distributors that will be attending the Expo that you think I should interview for ZPH! :-)

  9. Skeleton+ works for sure, I've added it to the list of Halloween Homebrew!

Unfortunately it seems there aren't any more Halloween homebrews than those i suggested to you a while ago. I was hoping there might be a few more i have overlooked.

You could also add Skeleton+ which is at least somewhat spooky and maybe a few hacks like:

    Hell-o-ween

    Halloween III

    Halloween 4

    Pumpkinhead

We really need more Halloween themed homebrews for the 2600. icon_mrgreen.gif

Castle of Doom is definitely right on target for Halloween, I think I will have to branch out to 'spooky' to fill up the list. I've now added it. :-)

If "spooky" counts instead of just specifically Halloween-themed, I think Castle of Doom fits the bill, too.

  10. I'm just concentrating on the 2600 for now on the show. I'll be expanding out to homebrews on other platforms later on as I get my systems modded for RGB output, Intellivision will probably be next as I just got the RGB kit in the mail the other day.

A bunch of us did a Happy Halloween demo for the 7800 years ago if that is of any interest to you?

  11. There is a HUGE show this coming Wednesday September 26th!!!

ZeroPage Homebrew will have the EXCLUSIVE LIVE DEBUT of Champ Games new game Wizard of Wor Arcade. We will also debut Nathan Tolbert's Atari 2600 Multi-Tap prototype that allows you to play Wizard of War Arcade with two joysticks in port #1 and the AtariVox+ in port #2! This is a show not to miss. :-)

  12. Does anybody know of any Halloween themed Atari 2600 homebrew games? I know there are TONS of hacks out there but the only original Halloween themed games I could find are:

I'm asking as I'll be doing a ZeroPage Homebrew show on October 31st and wanted to fill it with great Halloween homebrew.

If you don't know of any others besides those three, please feel free to recommend your favourite Halloween Atari 2600 hacks!

    EDIT: Added!

  13. I think links for where to download, purchase or watch footage of all the 2018 Atari Awards Nominees is a great idea! We'll make that happen in January when the nominees are announced for each category.

Thanks for the list!. The ROMs for most of these are available with just a few exceptions.

Maybe you should compile and post a ROM pack with all available final/latest versions in January to make voting easier.

  14. Oh definitely the game is being made for the Atari 2600. It mirrors the situation of games that are being developed with the advanced hardware inside of a Harmony Cart. During development for some games you need a Harmony Cart to play and test them but when they're sold as a complete game on it's own cartridge it has everything inside the cart needed to run.

To currently play THIS work-in-progress game on an Atari 2600 from a binary file you need an UnoCart, but when/if this game goes to retail, the cartridge would contain everything that's needed to run. People who buy these games don't necessarily know what's going on inside the cartridge, all they know is that they can plug it into their Atari VCS and it works. :-)

So the game is not made for the Atari2600 at all then?

  15. This homebrew is not able to run on the Harmony OR the Stella emulator, only a UnoCart (hence my purchase)! I'm not able to reveal anything about the game until the broadcast so I can't really say anything more. Should be very interesting!!

So homebrew that can't run on Harmony? Does it utilize the arm coprocessor? I hope it comes to the AA store. If not, I may have to buy an UNO... icon_shades.gif

  16. You're very welcome, thanks for making the game! Thank you also on the clarification on how to get into Electric Mode.

I think you're right about making Electric the default, it would probably be the right level of difficulty for the normal mode and make the non-Electric an 'easy/kids' mode.

Thanks for playing and for the comments! I like the idea of making the alternate characters the main ones, and vice-versa.

To get to Electric mode, you need to press Select from the title screen. You can switch between modes from there (the screen will say which mode you're on). Only the left difficulty matters; the right doesn't do anything. Given the discussion of challenge, maybe the game should start in Electric mode.

More enemies would be cool, but the game would require a new kernel and would wind up with a fair amount of flickering, unfortunately.

    I'll start tinkering. Thanks again!
