It's got amazing strategy to it as Karl G said above, it's very, very playable and super challenging. Do you have a to-do list for what's left to finish up on the game?
Unfortunately the issue with Thrust destroyed my motivation back then. And I never continued with the game.
Only the 1K version got finished for the Minigame Competition. -
I can't believe this amazing game of Thomas' has slipped by me and I haven't put it on ZeroPage Homebrew yet!!! Time to remedy that.
Robot City will be on our next livestream of ZeroPage on Wednesday September 5! The show will start at 2PM PT/5PM ET and if you not able to watch it live, it it'll be on our YouTube archives the next day. :-)

Oh sorry, yes, she is sicksweet in the rankings listing. Yes, I think Lady Bug is going to be more up her alley, mine too. Looking forward to the next round!
Oh nice about the Brazil version of her name, thanks for that info! She's actually named from the Russian version of it, although she isn't Russian.
Okay, just to be sure is Tanya sicksweet?
I think she's gonna love Lady Bug.
Interesting note: we have the name Tânia in Brazil, I thought it was a Brazilian name, never imagined an English variation.

Thanks Lid! Tanya and I played the game last night streaming on the show as a last attempt to get some decent scores in. I couldn't best my previous score but she was able to get a score of 5870 on her last round.
Tanya 5870
Congrats to all players.

Definitely an amazing set of games to start with!! :-)
I just ordered my first set of homebrew games from the AtariAge store: a copy of Draconian (the "no box" version) together with Star Castle Arcade, Wall Jump Ninja and Fall Down.
Can't wait to play these games!

Could it be a result of the RGB video board that I've upgraded my light sixer with? http://etim.net.au/2600rgb/installation-6switch/
I've also attached some photos of my VCS in case that helps.
Yes, James Atari is a bit special. E.g. the playfield updates are 1 color clocks slower.

Thanks so much almightytodd! I definitely wanted a name that would be intimately tied to the Atari 2600 (and 6502+variant architectures) and ZeroPage jumped out to me almost immediately. It had a great sound to the words and definitely had an association to a specific era of programming & gaming!
I love the name of this... ...was the ZeroPage concept unique to the 6502? Or did other architectures also use it?

Thanks everybody who tuned in to watch the super fun Atari 2600 Homebrew Hack's livestream episode yesterday. I just posted YouTube archive link to the episode in the top post (20180829 episode). If you have any more great hacked 2600 games that you'd like me to include in another episode of hacks, leave your favourites here or PM me! :-)
EDIT: As Thomas pointed out below, I am looking for hacks that not just alter the graphics but add something significant in terms of either gameplay, level design etc..

Thanks so much for watching the show! We'll definitely be giving the game another go on the stream with two players once you've got a stable picture with the line count fixed up.
The game looks like a lot of fun with all the changes made to Dark Chambers. Great job, keep it up, can't wait to try it again! :-)
Thanks!! I was able to watch a bit of the show...sorry about the freezes and glitches, this is the first I've ever heard of that happening. So it's a scanline issue?

Lovely! Dan actually dropped by Digital Press on Saturday to present the prototype to the NVGM, but I missed him by a few minutes!
Oh wow, that would have been amazing to have been there for, too bad you missed it!
Nice! I hope you will let us know when the games are finished and ready for sale.
Yes, I will definitely keep everyone updated as Dan passes me the new builds of the games for livestreaming on my Twitch channel!

That's great news!
I have one question: will the original, unfinished ROM be made public eventually?
Would love to archive it in the Atarimania database it for VCS video game history sake.
He said he might release the original prototype ROM and that it would be after he's finished his new reworking of "Keystone Kapers 2" if he does.
Just want to say I love your channel. Fantastic quality videos and love the longplays to really see the game play and your opinions as you play them
Thank you so much for watching the show AtariLeaf, it's been a fun six months so far! It's a blast doing the livestreams and showcasing all the amazing programming talent out there for the VCS! Every new game blows me away at the continuing innovation that is still available from a 40+ year old console!
The question is, does this count as homebrew or is it an official release?

That's actually a good question. If he was continuing to finish off the code he was working on back in the day it might be a bit of both since it was both before and after the discontinuation of the system? Since he's programming the new version of the game from scratch I think it definitely counts as homebrew in this case. :-)
Any chance this game will be finished for the PRGE this year?
He's stated that he intends to publish it through AtariAge and they have a booth at PRGE so I would at least think there would be a demo of it ready to show off. The most he's revealed for a release date is 'later this year' so it's a possibility but since we're only about 6-7 weeks away from PRGE I don't think there will be a boxed copy on cart with manual in that short of time. You never know! I'll definitely keep people up to date. :-)

I thought I'd provide an update for everyone following the news on this highly anticipated game! :-)
I'm happy to announce that ZeroPage Homebrew will be exclusively debuting TWO new WIP games from Dan Kitchen on an upcoming Twitch livestream!!
1) Keystone Kapers 2 (aka Keystone Cannonball): The game will be written completely from scratch with a new name. "The train will be a runaway circus train with various exotic animals to avoid. Each level ends when the player locates a varying number of engine parts that have been scattered in and around the train cars and makes their way to the locomotive to stop the train before time runs out."
2) Bon Voyage: "Activision-style game where the player pilots the Titanic from Southampton to the Americas"You can check out the links in my signature to keep updated on the details as I get them from Dan. :-) I'm really looking forward to playing these two work-in-progress games for you live on an upcoming episode of ZeroPage!!

I've scheduled Climb the Tree to be on our next episode of ZeroPage Homebrew on Wednesday August 22nd! :-) I don't have the exact time it'll start but probably around 3-4PM PT, hope to see you there!
Here's the upcoming schedule of shows.
So looking forward to the let's play!

When is the next episode? -
Wow, that was quick work! Looks like you fixed up everything I talked about and it's completely playable now on real hardware for the stream, thanks!
I'll include the game in an upcoming episode of ZeroPage! :-)
Thanks for the tip! This is a very useful way to check scanlines.
I have fixed it up (I hope) and fixed the second player so you should be good to go for a test run. (bin in main post)
It still needs a proper start screen and sounds and maybe a 1p option. Maybe an AI.
Not sure if that will fit on 4k, we will see.

Hi Coolcrab! Looks like a fun two player game. I'd love to play it on our show ZeroPage Homebrew but it's a little too jittery on real hardware at the moment. I recorded a short video of it playing on my VCS.
The line count for the game seems to jump in the range from 262-276. It jumps to 264 when the screen scrolls down and a big jump to 271 lines when a piece of the tree disappears off the bottom of the screen. You can check out your line count in Stella by pressing ALT-L (on windows). You can analyze it frame by frame by jumping into Debugger mode (~ on Windows) and clicking 'Frame +1' over and over to see it in action.
Also, as you can see in the video I noticed you can get six powerups in a very short amount of time by going right to the top of the tree.
Other that that, keep up the good work. Looking forward to updates! -
Thanks so much LLI! Glad you're enjoying our shows!! It's definitely a lot easier to figure out patterns within the game while watching someone else play, especially with a game as intense as this one!! Another thing I observed after the show watching the video is that when you fire at the parts of the ring that the mines are clinging to they will release early, at least in the early stages. In the later stages, they just jump off right away and go after you.
Thomas J. let us know on the stream that his 32k in the highscore table isn't real and is just a factor of 2, he said he's never actually got even close to that score. It's definitely something to aim for, it's such a crazy high score but since you've already made it past the 20k it doesn't get any harder!
I also played the hell out of Yar's Revenge back in the 80's and 90's, it definitely deserves its place as the best selling original title for the 2600.
I'm also glad you picked this game as I also don't think I would have put in this much work to get the score that I got!! :-) This tournament was a great idea and also some great content for the stream!
Great show as always.
I learned a lot from your video! The gun fires as soon it's alligned with the ring holes.
If I understood right, only the destruction of the outer ring causes the recreation of a new one.
I also discovered 20k is when difficulty is at the highest level. It makes me want to break the 32k high score even more.
I'm basically using the bounce strategy while trying (with poor results so far) to mix with that crazy strategy from the video Thomas posted.
I had Yars Revenge when I was around 6 and played it a lot back then!
Never saw a Star Castle cabinet and I only played SCA a couple of times before.
I'm loving to learn and try different strategies.
I'm glad I picked this game for the tournament, otherwise I probably wouldn't put the effort the game deserves. The game is hard but it's a rewarding experience.

Awesome, thanks so much Thomas! I'll use this version on the livestream on Wednesday. :-)
