60fps Video Capture from Atari 2600 & Framemeister
ZeroPage Homebrew replied to ZeroPage Homebrew's topic in Hardware
Ahh, okay. Very interesting, so the VCS dictates when the TV is to draw a new frame on the screen and can do so within a certain tolerance level. Sorry but this next question probably delves into a programming question that has been gone over before ad-nausium. If I'm reading correctly, when the VCS sends a VSYNC, that is the signal to tell the television "hey get back up to the top, we're going to draw a new frame" and this can be done at any time whenever the programmer wants? Now... The question is what the Framemeister, my video capture device (Elgato HD60S) and the capture software (OBS) are all doing along the line with 55-65Hz worth of framerates. Right at this moment they are all set to "60Hz" (whether or not this is actually exactly 60Hz or 59.94Hz shortened to 60Hz for simplicity is still remaining to be seen). -
60fps Video Capture from Atari 2600 & Framemeister
ZeroPage Homebrew replied to ZeroPage Homebrew's topic in Hardware
That's definitely similar to the issue that I'm experiencing. Yar's Revenge appears to draw the Qotile barrier every alternating frame, every 1/60th of a second. It sounds like your capture device is dropping a large number of frames, every second one of them, making it appear like the barrier is gone. (quick, shoot it!) Luckily mine is not QUITE as bad as that but it does appear to drop a frame every once in a while so that two "even" frames will show up together for a while making the screen appear 'stuck' for a very short period of time. -
60fps Video Capture from Atari 2600 & Framemeister
ZeroPage Homebrew replied to ZeroPage Homebrew's topic in Hardware
Whoah, what? I thought the VCS and CRT televisions were locked in at 59.94Hz, how would a NTSC CRT display a 55Hz or 65Hz game? Followup questions: 1) Is there a way to find out what frame rate a game is running at? 2) If a CRT is locked to 59.94Hz but not the VCS, how is it possible for the VCS to alter the number of times the screen is drawn per second on the CRT? I thought it was locked into the frequency of the AC power. Does the TV drop/repeat frames? -

Physical boxes obsolete? The story of Assembloids2600
ZeroPage Homebrew replied to enthusi's topic in Atari 2600
Thanks so much, I'm glad you enjoyed our Let's Play of your awesome game! We do eventually read the manual after a round or two, hahah, I just like to re-live the days for a tiny bit back when we had no access to manuals like we got games second hand (having no internet in the 80's!!). It also gives an idea of how intuitive the game is! Personally I love the gorgeous art are work that goes into a boxed copy of a game and how they sit beside each other on the shelf. I don't buy games that don't have a physical release of some sort and as a consequence I fear my days of gaming on modern consoles will soon come to an end. Thank goodness for places such as Limited Run Games and of course all the Homebrew websites! BUT, saying all that I know a lot of people don't share my point of view and would rather get the game more inexpensively on cart or rom only as to avoid the massive amount of clutter that can arise from having hundreds of boxes around the house. I can only hope that the people like me continue to buy enough boxed games to keep the incentive going for the people like you who want to see their games put out in full regalia!! Keep on doing what you're doing, the homebrew community is richer for it! -
Removing the Harmony Cart with system on?
ZeroPage Homebrew replied to ZeroPage Homebrew's topic in Harmony Cartridge
Thanks for the tips on the quick removal of the cart Kosmic Stardust. I feel a bit more secure about performing the cart exorcism from the console now. I asked because I'll be doing a livestream of RAM Pong on my Twitch Homebrew show this Friday and didn't want to destroy anything!! Check the links below for more info. :-) -
Does anyone know if there can be any potential damage done to the Harmony Cart or the VCS by removing the Harmony Cartridge while the system is on? I *REALLY* want to play RAM Pong without the cartridge in the machine, just to see the magic in action, but I'm a little wary of damaging one or the other.

Using overscan to store data?
ZeroPage Homebrew replied to deepthaw's topic in Atari 2600 Programming
Hahah, if you're counting switches as memory you could count the joystick direction/buttons or other controller in port 2 as even more user controlled input memory storage! :-) -
Hi WizardBone! Hope you were able to catch the stream, I had no problem getting it up and running on my RGB modded light-sixer. :-) The stream was recorded and can be watched here: https://youtu.be/ozBbdNCjpEg?t=56m22s I could not for the life of me find the boss! I tried to go everywhere I could think of in the game but I was probably missing something really obvious. Hello from the West Coast! :-) -James

Juno First - Final Version (Atari 2600)
ZeroPage Homebrew replied to cd-w's topic in Homebrew Discussion
Hi Chris, you're so welcome! Thanks so much for watching my playthrough of Juno First, what an accomplishment that game is and such a fantastic port of the arcade game! I really love the speech in the game and definitely wanted to hook it up properly to showcase its inclusion in the game. I'm glad I was able to get it all piped in through the mixer so the voice was nice and clear while playing. I will definitely be revisiting Juno First in another stream as I had a blast playing it on the show. :-) - James -
Doodle Jump 2600 - alpha version
ZeroPage Homebrew replied to Dionoid's topic in Homebrew Discussion
I've been trying off and on to break the 4000 barrier but I just haven't been able to so I thought I'd submit my next closest score, 3716! Also, if anyone missed our ZeroPage livestream of Doodle Jump, here it is! https://youtu.be/ZYjwV3NSJXE?t=55m47s Some of the suggestions I think I made during the Twitch livestream of the game and ones I've thought of since are: 1) Wider platforms at the start and less wide as time goes on 2) Denser platforms at the start and more spaced out as time goes on 3) Unstable platforms that you can't land on (a different color) 4) Platforms that change from green to yellow to red and then disappear as you jump on them 5) Flying enemies that go back and forth blocking your way 6) Enemies that sit on platforms so that you can't land on them 7) Ability to shoot enemies with fire button 8 ) Pickup: Temporary higher bounces 9) Pickup: Temporary balloon that floats you up (you can pick when to pop it with the fire button) 10) Changing background colour to signify your progression 11) Things blowing you left and right so it makes it harder or easier to go in that direction 12) Slippery platforms making it hard to stay on them 13) THIS version built into the game as an option so you can play the original build of the game (which is really fun in itself 14) Platforms that move back and forth, left and right -
