Hi,
Mizapf is kind enough to let us know when new MAME is released and what has changed in the Geneve/99/4a emulation.
Can someone point me to the release notes for MAME, so I can keep up with anything that might have changed in the CC-40 emulation, as I'm always hoping, HEXBUS emulation will move forward, I know Mizapf isn't responsible for the CC-40 emulation.
Thanks,
Dan

Is there a copy of the CC-40 Schematics Available?

Does the source code to the CC-40 Operating System available?

So following docs, discussed here:
I used my new to me Hakko desoldering gun and new to me, no clean up soldering flux, made de-soldering very easy.
I checked each pad and trace for damage - none.
I then soldered in new sockets, checking both the top of the board and bottom of the board for any solder bridges (none).
I made sure each joint was shinny.
When I put everything back together, the little CC-40 wouldn't boot. It did get power as half of the display darkened a bit.
I didn't know if the CC-40 would boot with out either of those two memory chips, but I pulled them both out of the socket. Looking at each memory chip after being pulled from the socket, I inspected all pins. There where no bent pins.
I know a solder bridge can keep a machine from booting, but if there was a solder bridge, removing the chips would still leave that bridge in place, as would not having a pin connected.
Some, I'm leaning towards a bad chip or chips? What do those of you with electronic knowledge think? What should be my next step in trouble shooting?
Before, the board, After and dachips.

DonO and GaryB made a working accelerator board based on the TMS99105 for the 99/4a console.
Maybe they would be willing to share their schematics as a jumping off point for the interested.

This topic reminded me of a picture over at the nightfallcrew website from a while back, something you can do with your old cpu....

tldr; navarone grom buster $150.
Man... If I knew it was a big enough market, I'd go in to the grom buster making business - like yesterday! 😃

I was playing some old games on my finalgrom and I noticed an oddity with my now ancient TI joysticks.
Seems like at the start of a game, the fire button was detected every time pressed, even with very little force applied.
A few seconds in to the game.. donkey kong, parsec, ti invaders is would fail to detect fire, but still pick up the directional presses.
Same games, same console, etc, but I hooked up my amiga joysticks for the TI, the problem totally disappeared.
I took some de-ox it to the TI joysticks (connector and pads), but the problem remained the same.
Anyone else seen this behavior?
Thanks,
Dan

I know it's a PITA, it takes a lot of time and has an up front cost in equipment and provides zero payback, but repair/upgrade video's are the best for people that want to learn and / or try it themselves. So, please consider making video's of your endeavors.
I've learned a lot from Wagner's TechTalks channel.

I think for proper help, you'll need to list the version of ABasic and MDOS your currently using.
Also, if it's not a big deal, try moving the speech synthesizer to a 4a console and give it a try, as it's possible the speech ROM went bad.

pc99 has a utility to transfer whole disk. you start pc disk transfer on the ti, and pc99 + ti disk transfer on the pc and you have a choice to copying the disk one direction or the other. It uses a rs232 cable to attach both machines.

I thought one option might be to print the short case, BUT, print a whole where the EPROM site, because with a dust cover on, the most important benefit provided would be mechanical stability.

Power Supply Recap:
Has anyone done this? Has anyone had the need to recap a TI power supply?
I know most of the Model 100's are dead, if they have not been recapped, but our little 4a doesn't seem to suffer the mass burnt out seen in other electronics of that era.

The Brewing Academy's final grom comes with a case, it's not as nice (IMO) as the COREi, but after a little work with a Dremel tool, it works, but the label doesn't line up well with the indicator LED.
I'm afraid, that you might have to eat the cost of the nicer COREi case and use the standard issue one - if I understand your question.
Also, I like the arcade shopper final grom a little better, because it seems odd to insert the SD card upside down.. But once it's in, it's in.
One other option, maybe you can send you Brewer Academy final grom to COREi, and he can build one for it?
It would be worth it to me to retro-grade my two Brewer Academy Case, that actual cartridge itself works great.

Hi All,
Thanks for the feedback, the Mean Well looks to be a popular option for retro computers.

As far as a Dan do it yourself project, perhaps a bridge to far (wish I had that level of electrical engineering talent)!

I have two TI Transformers that BUZZ when they are plugged in, and REALLY BUZZ when you turn on the console.
Being the elder geek that I am, I said - "That doesn't sound good!"
So my question is, can these be easily repaired?
Is there a better solution today, then these 40 year old transformers that can be easily implemented?
thanks!

Thanks CS1 that's good to know. In this case, I can't detect any problem with the menu bar.

arcadeshopper for the WIN!
Both consoles, are older black and silver.
Just so we could eliminate any talk of final grom, I pulled my original TI module (PHM3112).
Parsec will start, but the screen pretty quickly becomes corrupt, so I'm guessing a memory chip.
What would be the best path to figure out what memory chip, TI Diags test memory, but I get the feeling memory, is only the scratchpad.

Ralphb was kind enough to help me out, the magic incantation I was looking for is:
xdm99.py -T ashello.obj -f df80 -o disk1/ASHELLO

I have a final grom. One of my consoles will play moon patrol and one will not.
On the defective console, moon patrol will start, but the opening sound, sounds kind of 'tinny', then in crashes.
The defective console will pass TI diagnostics and play TI Invaders, run a basic program.
I'm thinking in might be a bitmap mode thing?

>The Geneve II project stalled and has not been picked back up. No word on any plan.
I'd guess arcade shopper was referring to the stalled Geneve II project that was happening in the UK about eight years ago. My brain is fuzzy as to the name of the gentlemen working on the project, as I only remember reading his name once in the UK newsletter.

Electronics Help Need with CC-40 Memory Upgrade
in TI-99/4A Development
Posted
Insane One,
Thanks for the tips, while I had checked for continuity (where there shouldn't be any on adjacent pins), I hadn't thought to test to make sure Address and Data lines (shared) between the two chips checked out. I did that, and they do.
When I started being active in the group, I read the threads related to the TL866 as luck would have it, yesterday Bob mentioned testing 99/4a VRAM DRAM. Then I got to thinking, I wonder if the TL866 would test 6264 SRAM - sure enough it would. I put in chip 1, test - good, put in chip 2 test - Bad Data Bus, retested both chips, with the same result.
Bad chip tossed, I have a couple of more chips coming in. I will test before trying them, and note which chip goes in which socket. I have my fingers crossed.
