  1. I would argue that 7800 programming, development, and discussion is at an all-time high.

And that's even counting the years the 7800 was officially supported. After the first year, there really wasn't as much interesting stuff in the works for the 7800 as there was this year. By the way, is Froggie still in the works?

There isn't too much work left to finish Froggie but I currently have to much private business :(

  2. If I use 7800_32k and the 7800BIOS I only get one frog chirp sound on the menu screen then no other sounds. My CC2 doesn't have a pokey chip.

HSC_32K and HSC as the bios do the same thing except I then get the high score screen as well.

Press PAUSE twice in the title menu then you can select between TIA/Cartridge Pokey/XBoard Pokey.

  3. I just played the Frogger homebrew. Pretty tough to play. I'm using ProSystem emulator and had no sound when playing the game. Does it have sound? I realize it is a beta version and is not complete.

True it's not final but supports pokey (and tia) anyway.

If sound doesn't work than your settings CC are wrong.

For Prosystem use the a78 and not the bin file.

  4. Hallo Gunnar

Habe gerade im Mitgliederbereich das Sondermagazin downgeloaded.Bekomme aber beim Emulator nur einen

    Disk Error.

    Gruss Walter

    Hi Walter,

wenn Disk error erscheint H und dann 1 drücken, dann kannst du die Files auswählen.

Nicht vergessen den Emu auf 128kb zu stellen sonst läuft Crownland nicht richtig.

  5. I don't know because I don't know the macro or even maria.h.

    What it does is simple.

You enter a text, a palette number a label and a position then the tool displays a line you can copy & paste in your displaylist source.

It looks like this ".byte <label,$60,>label,$f5,$10" for "Hello world", palette 7, adress "label" and postion $10.

I just resumed 7800 programming and again it was annoying to create the displaylists especially the "calculation" of the palette/text length byte for text output.

That's why I hacked a little tool where you can enter the string, choose the palette and the program creates the displaylist string for you.

You can just copy & paste it to your code.

Maybe it's useful for some of you (at least it’s useful for me ;))

    .NET framework 1.1 is required.

Sorry for responding so late but I started looking at 7800 programming again. Just so I'm clear...doesn't this do the same a the XHEADER macro in maria.h?

  6. Hi,

I've got a request about porting the volksForth system to the Atari 7800 System (see --> volksforth.sf.net ).

A Forth System would run well inside the 32kb RAM and would allow interactive development on the machine.

To start with I would do some tests with an A7800 emulator.

My question: is there an emulator that allows communication (like serial) between the A7800 System and the host environment?

    Best regards

    Carsten Strotmann

    Hi Carsten,

unfortunately the 7800 has only 4k of RAM but of course it is possible to create a cartridge with a 32kb RAM chip.

I don’t think that the emulators supports more than 16kb RAM but not sure about that.

Serial communication isn’t possible with any of the emulators.

  7. Tainted Love does not use the Pokey.

I know because I was trying to use it as a test for my cart board.

So the only reason I have it inside a commando is for the bankswitch then?

    Yep.

The only reason it used a "pokey" bankswitch for the CC2 was because there wasn't a non-Pokey 512K bankswitch file.

Pokey is also enabled but the "demo" only uses TIA.

True, Tainted Love is only TIA.

Multi Lock On demo uses Pokey.

  8. And here are two tunes with very high timing characteristics. On the real thing still more is possible, but this setting sounds almost same on RMT, the A8 emulator and in the new SAP player.

I really appreciate your effort but I think pokey can do better.

I just listen to the c64 tune and it is so nice I really like to hear something like that on the good old xl.

    However please keep on going.

  9. Here's a test of trying to create one of my 1980's games for the PC. Quite a promising start. On startup, it shows a character mode test screen. Push RESET to clear the screen and enable the worm/snake/whatever. Move the joystick to move the worm/snake/whatever around the screen; push fire button to move faster. The maximum length is 250. I could go longer if I wanted to use a two-byte counter.

    Nice :)

  10. As per supercat's suggestion in my 7800 cycle counting blog entry, herein find an alternate version of my sample 7800 display list builder using the unloved (zp,x) addressing mode.

The main advantage is a surprising savings of 25 cycles per sprite (161 versus 186), although some/all of this may be lost when wrap around is added. The disadvantage is the routine requires 2 bytes of zero page RAM per display list.

I've also added the dummy 5 byte sprite header to set Write Mode which was missing from the first skeleton.

    Thanks for sharing Eric.

Personally I prefer a "static" dll because it's easier to handle and entries outside the visible area doesn't eat any cycles but I guess there are circumstances where you better use a more dynamic model.

  11. Well, I don't think you can put Amstrad/Schneider and Atari on the same level.

I was just thinking of the 8-Bit Ataris here. First time I saw one in my whole life was when we met in Karlsruhe (or Frankfurt?)

    :rolling:

The A8 ranked right behind the C64 and far before the ZX spectrum (which comes third IMHO).

In our "regular store meetings" at Karstadt every Saturday we had a 50/50 situation between C64 and Atari XL users but in reality it was more about 80/20 I guess.

  13. Ok, I don't want to be known as a troll around here, but I smell a rat. After being told that green is the normal title screen for 7800 Galaga, in another thread, I checked Mobygames, a huge video game database, and found these screenshots:

    http://www.mobygames.com/game/atari-7800/galaga/screenshots

As you can clearly see, the game's title screen is in gold, not green. Even when I emulated 2600 Galaxian, in Stella, the colors were more detailed and crisp then they are on my 7800.

I don't know if all of this is because my 7800, which I bought from someone on this site, might be damaged (there were pieces of black plastic that fell out of the system as I was unwrapping it), if I need to get it modded for AV output, or just get a 2600 with a cartridge slot hacked into it, but something's got to be wrong here.

Maybe you use a NTSC Galaga on a PAL Device or vice versa?
