Anyone else interested in Alien Syndrome?
figgler replied to AtariJr's topic in Nintendo Wii / Wii U
So did you grab it? Did anyone? I haven't seen this game around much and unfortunately I am thinking that it's not becasue it's consistently selling out. People seemed pretty tuned up for this game though and I hope the intellectual void that is IGN wasn't enough to scare people away -
Star Wars NES - The JVC and Namco versions
figgler replied to figgler's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Okay who's managed to beat Star Wars for NES (the JVC one)? Talk about difficult. The level right after you defeat the dianoga in the trash compactor has me wishing death on the designers. Not to mention it takes half an evening to get to that point. Luckily this is one of those games where skill and memorisation really pay off, and it's a fun action game that keeps me coming back. I just hope I don't have to kill somebody as a result of frustration. -
Actually I don't see this doing much unless the games he's having trouble with are imports or Camerica games. Whethter the console blinks or not rarely has anything to do with the lockout chip. Most likely it's going to be the pin connector

Who has played Carnival Games and what did you think?
figgler replied to Crazy Climber's topic in Nintendo Wii / Wii U
It's hard to find any info on this game out there. i wasn't able to find a review or a game list. 1up had some footage that I watched. From what I can gather though there are about 20 games and a whack of unlockable games to work toward I ordered it from Amazon last night since it's an easy sell for me. I still play Wii Play sometimes and this looks more cohesive and varied. There had better be those super-enormous 10 ft stuffed snakes with felt tongues to win or I'll be pissed. -
What games would really benefit from the Wii controls?
figgler replied to RickHarrisMaine's topic in Nintendo Wii / Wii U
With the exception of Metal Slug, everything I have played on Wii has benefitted from the controls. Now don't misunderstand, as I think there is a lot of room for improvement when it coems to the controls in some games, and by no means are developers using hte remote optimally just yet. However, as a generality, playing with the remote is just a lot more fun than the "old school" way. Look at RE4. The game is exactly the same on Wii as it was before, but the Wii Remote controls make the game so much better, it's night and day. -
Star Wars NES - The JVC and Namco versions
figgler replied to figgler's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Thanks guys for the stories and info. The Youtube link was especially good since it shows a good few minutes of gameplay. So yeah, this game looks very ridiculous as far as Star Wars accuracy goes, what with Vader morphing into stuff and whatnot. However, it also looks like a pretty good Japanese side scroller that would be lots of fun. Kind of neat to see Star Wars mashed up with crazy Japanese-isms. Is that cart chromed over? That's too cool. I think I am going to have to look into importing this game somehow. -
Do you track your high scores?
figgler replied to Captain Beard's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I used to do that too, but I much prefer having them all in one place. This way I can look back and say "Hey, I beat Metal Gear with only X passwords" Plus, there is the added bonus of having them all in order, so essentially I can jump to almost any part of the game at any time. I've been keeping passwords for Super CastleVania 4 for years. I play through it usually once a year in October and just pick up with the password I last wrote down the year before. I don't think though that the game gets harder after you finish it once or more like say Super Mario Bros, it could actually, but I am not sure seeing as I haven't played from the true beginning in so long. -
I beat Prime and Prime 2. I haven't played 3 yet, as I am trying to follow the new "never pay full price for a game" doctrine. I'll get to it though. However, as I did above and whether it impacts MP3 or not, I very much recommend playing through Prime 2, particularly if you own it already. I mean it's not as if it's a chore exactly. Great game that surpassed MP in every single way. Part of what I'm excited about in MP3 is to see how it ties to MP2 (and it will, it's a trilogy afterall) and to see how they managed to improve on a game that I thought couldn't get much better for what it was. I don't know. I just like pirates

Been playing a good amount of Star Wars NES lately and I'm determined to finish it. This is the JVC version of course. What I'd forgotten about was the mysterious Famicom version of Star Wars from Namco that never made it to North America. I'm wondering though if anyone knows anything about that version, or has played it. The JVC game I'm playing, which is really quite good and challenging is largely a platforming shooter with some overhead stuff on Tatooine and at least one first person Falcon level so far. How does the Japanese version play and stack up against ours? I wonder if it's the same concept and nearly the same (a la WonderBoy and Adventure Island), or if it's radically different and possibly worth importing. And - how did this even happen? It's not often you find that a game based on an American movie was released in Japan first, and we got a completely different game some time later.

finish it first

I did a detailed search at toronto.com looking for this and it's nowhere. Looks like us Ontarians are waiting for the DVD release. Although, perhaps for the Toronto Film Festival next month?

Do multi-carts take some of the fun out of retrogaming?
figgler replied to SRGilbert's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Exactly. I thought about re-wording this, but you've done it so well I figured I'd just quote you and say "ditto" or "exactly" afterward. I got a bunch of people at work into DS about a year back when I brought mine in and a few of them had a go. Now there are a bunch of guys who have them, and they've all moved on to something called an R4. Makes me think of Obi-Wan's astromech droid co pilot, but no. I guess it's a multi flash cart of sorts, but I can't help but be disinterested largely for the reasons above, despite the fact that having access to everything for DS would cost me about as much as 3 games -
Pretty much all of my systems are hooked up all the time, but not always plugged in. I have this thing about leaving unused things plugged in, so I leave everything unplugged. As for playtime, I try to find a little each day to dedicate to all or some of what's on my current "playlist" I usually select a range of games across a few platforms and sgo with those until they are beaten, or I become tired of them. I do make a concious effort to play old systems though, most of all the NES of course. There is only so much modern gaming I can take with out craving something simpler and old.

Adventure on the DS...with Daffy Duck
figgler replied to atari2600land's topic in Modern Console Discussion
This game looks all kinds of cool to me. It's based on the awesome and famous Daffy episode "Duck Amuck" where he feuds with the artist. You must have seen it, the artist makes him wear silly costumes, erases his mouth, that kind of thing while Daffy freaks out. From what I gather about this game, you'll get to take on the role of the WB artist and sort of re-enact that cartoon which sounds like a great use of the stylus and a good use of my time -
Do any of you not read the game manuals anymore?
figgler replied to Ross PK's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Yeah tutorials these days make the manual pretty much defunct. It's a dying art for sure that I miss. Back inthe NES days, a lot of times if you didn't have the manual you were screwed as you may not be able to figure out the controls, or what the powerups do. Manuals are pretty great though, especially for classic games. I very much agree that it's part of the experience, but sadly not so much any more. I remember when I got Pin Bot and Astyanax way back when on the very first day of vacation in Florida. I wish I'd thought to bring the NES becasue I read those manuals twice a day for a week, each day craving more and more some actual playtime -
Are PS3 and XBox games that expensive, compared to 1993?
figgler replied to cdoty's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I paid 94.99 for Super Street Fighter 2 for Super NES -
Top ten most underrated games ever
figgler replied to Math You's topic in Classic Console Discussion
There are an awful lot of PC games on the list. All PC games are overrated in my view Now if we want to talk consoles (and I know we do) Legacy of the Wizard for NES is the single best underrated game ever. You probably don't even know what it is, or have rarely if ever played it, but you need to. Superior difficulty, awesome dungeon crawling and some of the best music ever put into a game. Play LOTW! -
NES High Score Club 2nd Season Week #24 - Vindicators
figgler replied to vdub_bobby's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I am not sure really. I got past this part by just shooting like nuts. Maybe try some bombs? 51,850 so far -
I like this idea, but in truth I am expecting the game to run about 20-30 hours for the first play through. I honestly don't think I'd have the attention span to do it again. At least not until years later when I feel like it's time to revisit. But, I do that with a lot of games. I'll be happy if I get to play as Samus, have a typically sprawling and shit-hot sci fi adventure and get all my questions answered about Phazon, this new brain, and whatnot. Say, how did all those metroids mutate in Metroid 2 anyway? Did they explain that? I haven't played the game in years, so I don't remember, but perhaps they will tie Phazon to that happening, tie up everything nicely and then move on to a different phase in the Metroid universe
-
I'd agree that the GBP is probably the better investment if you are only going to buy one. Personally I have both and I almost always play the classic GB games on the Super NES. The controller is much better as mentioned and the colour pallette options are just too cool. For something like the Mega Man games for instance, you can get most levels looking pretty good and not too far off from what you'd expect from an NES really. However, this works in reverse sometimes too. Metroid 2's default colours in the GBP look pretty darn good and getting a combo that's comparable on the Super GB would be tough, not to mention time consuming.
-
Right and I hope that's the case with this being a completely different brain that was used in some capacity other than on Zebes. I don't much like revisionist story telling, but I guess you never know how they'll do this. Being that the Prime games all happen between Metroid (Zero) and Metroid 2, I just hope they don't muck around with the appearance of Mother Brain in (Super) Metroid 3 or the premise that Samus hadn't been to Zebes since it was almost wiped out in Zero. Or if they do, I hope that they will explain it well enough. Of course with the inconsistencies with Ridley that they've already introduced (unless there is more than one of him too) one can never know.
-
It does. And you can adjust the size of the border so that the game screen is bigger or smaller depending on how much you dig the borders
