  1. From the videos of people playing the Frye version of Pac-man that I have seen it seems that most people try to get all the dots in one "room" of the maze before moving on to the next. That seems like a natural approach and avoids doubling back but causes the player to move in small repetitive loops. That is boring. It took me a long while to realize that the game can be played with longer zig-zag paths that let the player have a little sense of freedom and flow. You just have to go over the same areas more than once and that is counter intuitive. Also, I just wanted to say that I am one of the people who are freaked out by the placement of the exits in the Frye version. Using the exit at the bottom feels like falling into a hole but then the player reemerges from the perceived sky. That is freaky. The same thing happens in countless space games where aliens pass the player, exit at bottom and return at top and the mind accepts it because we can imagine being in space and that the ship traveled beyond our range of sight and or at high speed and returned in front of us. In the confined space of the Pac-man maze where you are imagining that you are earthbound it is hard to reconcile that path. The side exits work better I think because the mind has experience with people walking around behind you. In that case they appear to exit on one side and reappear on the other and the mind understands how this happens in 3D space and imagines an analog in the 2D game.
  2. Thank you sooooo much for posting the Tod Frye video. Fantastic! I played DINTAR816's 8k v5b today for the first time. Amazing. The sounds blow me away and it plays great. Not to mention that in most 2600 games with flicker the flickering drives me nuts but the way DINTAR816 has minimized it, I barely notice the flicker. Awesome work! It would still be cool to see a Frye update to his original version. After all, there can never be too many variants of the greatest game ever.
  3. I was totally at the expo and I put my name in six times and I was going to put it in a seventh time but I tripped on an extension cord and had to go to the hospital where I couldn't check my email and they fed me spam intravenously. I wish I had a spam filter. So, did you save me a cart?
  4. Not sure if this will help any but looking at the Shoot the U.F.O. 2015 .asm file it starts with what looks to me like an Atarivox driver then the following code then my game source code. processor 6502 ;include "macro.h" include "7800basic.h" include "7800basic_variable_redefs.h" ;start address of cart... ifconst ROM48k ORG $4000 else ifconst bankswitchmode ORG $8000 RORG $8000 else ORG $8000 endif endif game
  5. Did they sell out of concertos at PRGE?
  6. 7800bas takes care of all that. It signs the file an spits out a .bin and an .a78 version. So, I don't know how to do it the way you want to. Hopefully someone here will be able to help you. I only use 6502 assembly for small routines that I use within Basic programs. Then, I only use it if the program requires more speed. I have not needed to use assembly with 7800bas since it is so efficient. I have read though that the .bin and the .a78 are identical except the .a78 has the header which contains the info the emulator needs. I believe that, if you strip the header off an .a78 you can make a .bin that plays on real hardware. Good luck. Looking forward to seeing your 7800 game.
  7. Just a suggestion but if you have any understanding of Basic, you might take a look at 7800bas. There are several demos included with it and at least a couple game sources are available including my Shoot the U.F.O. 2015 source. When you compile a 7800bas program, it also generates an assembly listing which I think you may find educational. Plus, you can include inline assembly into 7800bas programs if you wish.

  9. I believe I have seen an Asteroids cart that did not have the copyright notice. So, I think it was added after the initial run.
  10. Yes. They thought that at first. Fortunately my parents are reasonable people who make an effort to learn the truth rather than let fear rule the day. Perhaps the world could use more of that attitude today.
  11. Can you imagine if the ancient Egyptians had 3D printers? Plastic mummies and plastic pyramids everywhere. I am going to pile all of my Atari carts into a pyramid shape someday. Then when I go my wife can wrap me in VHS tape and put me in the pyramid.
  12. I sold my original 1040STf with color monitor, a golden image external drive, a printer and a bunch of original software with boxes and manuals in the mid 90s for very little because my wife at the time thought my stuff was taking up too much space. After I realized it was the wife taking up too much space, I got another 1040STf and a more considerate wife.

  14. Guess you can thank the post lady for the cool stamps. Glad to hear you are enjoying it.
  15. I used to play with the 5200 high scores club but I have been neglecting my 5200 recently. If you want to be in the brotherhood though I would just post "I am in" in this thread then add a big bold blue member of the 5200 brotherhood signature line to all your posts. After that just wait and see if anybody contests it. If a couple of days pass with no complaints you can get your tatoo.
  16. GDG will have a limited amount of Alpha Race cartridges built by me available at the show. I did notice that the screenshot on the PRGE site appears to be a moch-up. It shows the fish on screen with normal enemy ships. That doesn't happen during play. Also the warp gate is out of position. Not sure why that screen is that way.
  17. Interesting comparison considering size, weight, popularity, reliability. I had a Cadillac once. Nearly the only thing that worked was the fuel gauge which always accurately pointed to empty. When it drove though, oh what a ride.
  18. Who's watching? Tell me who's watching. Who's watching me? I'm just an average man, with an average life. Rockwell
  19. Where did I put that booster grip? Oh well. HACK! Wala.
  20. On the link provided by the OP it says: I have used version 3.9.3 of the source code as later versions seem noticeably slower. Amazing how many newer softwares get slower while computers get faster.
  21. Alpha Race could be two button optional since by request I added an option to use button 2 as thrust if selected on options menu.
  22. Doh! I didn't have my glasses on. Now I see. So if we put the front one in back it would shrink. That sound like magic. Was Rodney Dangerfield's line - no perspective, I get no perspective? Just joking. I know what perspective is. But how can the big one be closer in the photo. Isn't the photo flat?
  23. I think instead of mini it should be called fun size. The smaller one is probably for flashback.
