All controllers produced the same result as attached image with no buttons pressed.
Interestingly if I pressed the left button on a 7800 joypad, inpt1 becomes 80 and when I release the left button inpt1 returns to 00 but, inpt2 begins to toggle. The display updates very quickly so I am not sure of the value but it looks like inpt2 toggles from 00 to 08 or 0A or 0F (something with a bar on center of character). If I press the left button again inpt2 stays on 00.Actually I just figured this out. I had been using a controller extension cord before (was not plugged in for the utility cart tests). When I try smasteroids demo without the extension cord, it works.
Sorry. I guess the extension cord only expects 2600 one button controllers.

Its only part of the puzzle, but when 7800basic sees a single button joystick button press, it turns off 2-button mode for that stick and reverts to 1 button mode. This uses a different register for reads.
Have you tried any other 7800basic samples? e.g. the Adventurer demo sets the background blue or red, depending on which button was pressed.
I tried Adventurer. Same result. My single button joysticks work but my control pads don't fire. The control pad directions all work. Just no fire buttons.
I tried a 7800 proline joystick. No fire in 7800bas games. So, it looks like it is a two button vs one button issue.

I tried the smasteroids demo from 7800bas by uploading it to my DevOs .2 modded 7800. I get a strange result.
It works fine except the ship doesn't fire if I use either an Atari 7800 joypad or a modded Nintendo pad. Both controllers are known to work and play other games on this same console.
The ship does fire though if I plug in an epyx 500xj, or a gemstick or a wico stick.
I have been playing with the debounce routine in smasteroids but keep getting the same result.
Any ideas why this is or what might be done to get it to accept most controllers?

Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately, I haven't calculated the cost-benefit analysis), it's still illegal.
http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/reusing-cardboard-postal-boxes-illegal
I just recycle the ones I get (rather than reuse them as you're doing) just in case someone ever throws a fit about it.
Thank you for the article link. I apologize and will never use their box for anything other than priority mail. That is a sincere public apology from me to everyone here and the post office.
I really appreciate their service and I know a lot of people try to cheat them. I never meant to. I thought it was just garbage. Now I know better.

The atari is a very old device....create back in 1492 by Christopher Columbus. How about making a game for the Xbox one?thanks.
I didn't realize the software situation for Xbox one was so bad that people were out begging for someone to program it.

Don't open it. Bury it in a time capsule so that 1000 years from now someone will dig it up, open it and wonder why it won't fit in their Atari.

So are you all lawyers in this forum?
Cause I got this thing with some unpaid parking tickets, a three legged dog that bit me and a drunken prostitute who also bit me and I could use some help.
-
I got it out of the trash after it had been mailed. That's called recycling. Hey I was trying to save the Earth. Yeah, you are welcome.good thing you cut off this part

I suppose I could still ship it somewhere by priority mail - someday. Or just put it back where I found it.

The foil thing works while the adhesive holds. I never tried krazy glue. I have used double sided tape with success.
Best is the way to go if you have the money or if you don't want to fiddle with the small bits of foil.

eBay it as a "deluxe collector's edition"
Looks more like a mock early prototype to me.
I wouldn't sell something that shabby though. It was really only an experiment that I hoped might stimulate some thought about alternate cart designs. Cardboard just happened to be a quick and easy way to rough something out.
Technically, no cartridge shell is required. The game pcb can still be inserted into a machine and played. Games without shells take up a lot less storage space.
Shells make handling carts nicer though. Some of the boards have sharp edges and or sharp soldered pins. In addition to making the cart more comfortable to handle, it keeps a person from having to come in contact with the lead based solder. The shell also protects the game from damage and keeps it clean while helping to guide the game into the cartridge slot.
Atari's cartridge shell design was excellent and I can see why a lot of pacmans get their shell robbed for home brew projects.
I believe though that a satisfactory cartridge design could be made from simple cast or machined layers in sandwich fashion and that it could be done safely using more appropriate materials and allowing more head space for the heat that can potentially be generated by the integrated circuit to dissipate.
Just curious but, does anyone happen to know what the metal shield on the game pcb that sits over the IC was for?

Nah, I never play that game anyhow. Seriously though during testing my cart did not get hot but this was just an experiment. Don't try making or using this cart.I hope it's not a fire hazard.
It seemed obvious to me that it isn't a real solution for the lack of new replacement shells and was just a for fun experiment but perhaps some people didn't see it that way.
Again, don't try this at home.

Solved. I modded another 7800 mobo (REV A) and put the DevOs eprom in. So far I have dumped and uploaded and played 2600 frogger, 2600 space invaders and 7800 centipede using the same laptop PC, cable and 32k linear ram cart.
So, there is a problem with the other 7800 mobo. The problem is not the missing 74LS02 timing circuit because the working REV A board doesn't have it either. Perhaps bad ram though the mobo rams were not getting hot. I'll have to work on that later.
Right now, I am going to play centipede from ram cart.

I noticed that Eckhard's instructions with release two say that you could test a small upload without a ram cart and to use -w2000 switch. I tried uploading splat.bin with the -w2000 switch. I get a timeout error. If I upload splat.bin with -w1800 the transfer completes but the game does not run.
-
This 7800 that I am having the trouble with uploading does not have the 74LS02, cap 65 or R66. I understand that some people remove these to improve compatibility with 2600 games but this unit never had those parts installed. Would this have any impact on uploads?
-
I now have a DevOs .2 modified 7800. It seems to work to dump carts as I have dumped Space Invaders and the resulting .bin worked in the Stella emulator and also played on the DevOs 7800 when placed on a Harmony cart.
However, when I try to upload to the DevOs system 32K ram cart with cap moved to factory position, it says the transfer was done but the game doesn't work.
I am using a Windows 98SE laptop booted in dos mode for all transfers down and up. I have tried the version of 7800ctrl.exe included on Eckhard's website with release 2. I have also tried the 78ctrl38.exe version with the -c1 switch. No luck.
Results have varied depending on what I tried to upload from black screen to vertical monochrome color bars to multicolor rolling patterns.
My laptop parallel port options are ECP and standard bi-directional. I have tried both and it didn't seem to make a difference?
I tried uploading a 2k game splatform 1.01 with switch -w1800 and it transferred but did not run. I tried uploading it with the ram cart in slot and without a ram cart inserted. Did not work either way. I assume no cart would be needed for this case?
Is there a chance this 7800 has faulty internal ram?
My goal is to be able to upload 7800 homebrews for testing on the real hardware.
Any thoughts or advice on what I might try to make this work are greatly appreciated.

I've tossed them by the thousands over the years. Al's garage probably has a lot of these in it too, unless he tossed them as well.
Where did you toss them? Maybe I can do a video about digging them up. Lol.
