Atarians : 5 Q's from TigerV2600 to 7800XM to Concerto Cart & more...
SIO2 replied to ataritiger's topic in Atari 7800
One thing you asked about is the Concerto cart. I do hope we see it available soon. I believe it would simplify and open up development on the 7800 the way Harmony did for 2600. I am concerned though because many posts that I have read about Concerto start with the person asking if it has pokey, high score save, expanded memory, etc. Concerto has reportedly been redesigned several times and I have to wonder if part of why we are still waiting is that the developer is trying to please everyone and make the 7800 Universal Widget. It is kind of the situation where I might want to fly to work in an antigravity hovercraft but a chevy could get me there. -
67,160 I had a train wreck.

209,750 My final score I think. Way fun game but I need a break now.

151,850 Mark my score up a bit.

It has been a while since I played the arcade version but it seems like the re-spawn location was either random or higher up. Re-spawning low every time is a disadvantage. The programmers probably couldn't squeeze random spawning in. I figure the limitations of the 2600 are also why this version has flying eggs and no troll hand in the fire pit.

Atari 2600 or the Coleco Gemini?
SIO2 replied to thevideogamecollector's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I fixed a couple of Gemini consoles. Both were just bad solder. Limiting my choices to those in the original post and if I were offered one or the other for free, I would leave the Gemini on the table. I like the 70's styling of the sixer. In fact, I wish they had used real wood on the face. Maybe even some wood knobs on top of the switches. -
58,490 and 41,190 of that on first pacman. Good start then I choked.

My favorite has changed over time and probably will again. Right now, I am so into 7800 because it has the 2600 compatability with the chance for some better new games. I still hope the concerto cart comes out soon. I think that would really be a boost for 7800.

Upped my score a bit. 119,750 Enjoying this round. I always liked Joust. I used to skip school to play the arcade version. 2600 version is pretty good really. It captures the essence anyhow.

For Trade: Super Mario World for a better looking copy
SIO2 replied to copper20's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
A pretty one won't play any better. Love the cart you are with. My favorite SNES cart used to be a rental. I bought it when the movie store closed down. Even with the permanent marker tats, rips in the label and security stickers she gives me much joy. -
Sold me some 2600 carts and one for Genesis. Great communication. Everything was as promised and very well packed. I would purchase from him again.

A little more than I had before: 45550. A brilliant but tough game indeed.

Here is what I got so far. 40990

The game designer should make the characters white and call the game Snow Rescue or some such. Then we can all get a couple of pairs of those old 3D glasses and make a pair of glasses with two blue lenses so we can see the creatures as they would have been. Or else pay the license and add the cost to the cart price. Doesn't sound profitable though.

Thinking of abandoning the 5200...maybe get an 8-bit computer
SIO2 replied to Dauber's topic in Atari 5200
I always thought the analog part of the 5200 controllers was fine. I think all of the stock Atari controllers for all of their systems left a lot to be desired though. Honestly, there are more games on the "8 bit" platform. 800xl is easy to come by and a great computer or you might consider the XEGS. Ideally, you would keep the 5200 and get an "8 bit" too. -
Atari 1200XL, 1050, 1030, Touch Tablet.. need help and advice

At least post some pictures. Condition matters. -

I am working on a couple of 7800s at the moment. Both will not turn on due to dirty switches. I have ordered some new switches but being impatient, I noticed that one type of switch can be cleaned. If you have the switches with the clear plastic covers and the rivets in each corner, you can cut the mushroom head off the rivets, lift the cover, remove the cap and the dome. Then clean the dome with a scouring pad. Clean the contacts inside the switch with a knife or screwdriver if they even need it. Then replace the parts back into the switch. The clear plastic cover should snap back into place well enough to hold the switch cap in. If you accidentally zing a cover to the nether regions as I did, just put some tape over the cap. The cover just keeps the dirt out and keeps the cap from falling out if you turn the machine upside down. Tape will work. If you have the revision A board with the grey switches, I guess you are out of luck. those look pretty solid.

Welcome to the world of Atari. Back in the day, I had some serious arguments with people who owned Commodores. Over time, I came to appreciate the Commodore 64 also. I bought my first Atari when I was 11 years old. Price was a big concern so, the choice for me was between VIC-20 and the 16K Atari 400. VIC had a real keyboard but Atari had more RAM. It was an agonizing decision. I looked over the catalogs until the pictures were soiled with the oil from my fingers and the pages actually fell out. Finally, I ordered the Atari. It took two weeks to arrive. When it did arrive it was defective and wouldn't turn on. So, I had to choose all over again to either get another Atari or exchange it for a VIC-20. I chose Atari again and after another couple weeks I got a working unit. I had no idea that three eleven year old lifetimes later it would still be working or that I would care but I do.

I recently discovered my E.T. cartridge fell out of the trash back in the 80s and has been under the dumpster all these years. It is not only dirty but greasy too. Would you like to add it to your collection for $200? I would be glad to put my gloves on and clean the contacts for you. Oh and my favorites: tie between 8 bit pacman arcade and 7800 pacman collection.

As a person with no formal electronics training, I was puzzled about the 1uf capacitor in the audio line. This video helped me understand what the capacitor is doing. I thought I would share the link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=eF8e-FmtDh4
