1. It does have that true Atari "hit the reset switch over and over" magic! One of my favorite homebrews, if not my favorite homebrew of all!
2. I seem to remember that the original Xbox was a little slow out of the gate, and had a lot of people who hated Microsoft vowing not to buy one, but it sure gained momentum.
3. Another bad thing about the 6 in 1 Konami stick is that they used the NES versions of, I believe, all the games, and yet lead you to believe the stick contains the arcade versions. Gyruss for the NES is particularly misleading, as the NES version has little in common with the arcade original- they should have renamed it Gyruss II.
4. I actually have a Star Wars ESB cockpit sit-down. The guy originally wanted $1800 for it on eBay, but I was able to work out a straight up trade for a 80's-era record jukebox that he wanted, which only cost me a fraction of that price. I wanted to buy Clay Cowgill's Star Wars multikit, but I don't seem to get any response from him. It fits great under the stairs in my game room. BTW, It's not a bigger monitor- just the standard 19 inch color vector monitor.
5. Here's my updated pix! We moved into our new home back in June, and I finally have room for my coinops, and everytime I was going to take pictures for this thread, I got more games. I'm hoping to pick up a Gorf and a Discs of Tron soon to add to the collection. It's kind of hard to see the marquees, so here's the list: Crystal Castles Time Pilot Congo Bongo Millipede (with multipede kit installed) Thief Tron Ms. Pac-Man/Midway cabinet with 39 in 1 game jamma kit installed Battlezone Moon Patrol Q*Bert Popeye Pac-man (with multi-pac kit installed) Space Invaders Empire Strikes Back cockpit
6. 1) How old are you? 37 2) What sex are you? Male 3) When did you get an Atari? 1982 4) When did you become involved with the Atari? (i.e. you wanted to play this over newer systems at the time or today). 1980 or 81, playing at my friend's house (I was so jealous) 5) Why the 2600? What does it offer to YOU that other systems, whether old or new, don't? My life is too busy to get involved with these long, complicated games of today. I also find the old games more addicting, simple and fun, and it's fun to get in a quick round of Megamania, or Kaboom when you don't have alot of time. 6) What drink keeps you going? (in case you spend long hours on the 2600). Coffee- I love my Starbucks with vanilla cream at night when I relax in my arcade/game room! 7) How many hours a day or at a time do you play the Atari? Depends on how busy I am. When I sit down with the Atari, I usually get in a good 60-90 minutes at a crack. How many days a week do you spend on it? not as many as I would like to- I also spend time playing my coin-ops in my rec room, and other classic systems 9) Your top 3-5 games. WHY these choices? Kaboom, Megamania, & Space Invaders for nostalgia, & simple addictive fun 10) Do you play any other systems besides the 2600? My 3 favorite systems are the 2600, Colecovision, and Intellivision. I own many other systems, including newer stuff like PS2 and Gamecube, but those three will probably always be my favorites, for sheer fun and sentimental value. 11) How do you view gaming of today as compared to the 70's/80's? With the exception of sports and racing games, I think today's games are pretty, but boring, overly complicated, and do not have that addictive quality that made you hit the reset switch on the 2600 over and over again! 12) Do you usually just play the 2600 alone or have someone play with you? (If so, is it a relative or friend?) Unfortunately, I'm a loner most of the time, although my 5 year old enjoys playing some of the early 2600 games with me, like Combat and Outlaw, and the new homebrew Seawolf. 13) Finally, do you or have you ever tried to turn someone to the "Atari side"? No, but you can see the gleam in their eyes as they recall their youth, looking at my Atari stuff!
7. I assume you're being sarcastic, but still Frankenstein's Monster is still one of my favorite 2600 games!
8. I saw these a few weeks ago, as I was walking in the mall past Spencers. I saw the Frogger one out of the corner of my eye through the window, and did a doubletake (kind of like when you walk into Goodwill, and you catch a glimpse of an old electronics item with some woodgrain on it, and immediately think it might be an Atari 2600!). I thought to myself "Nah... it couldn't have been!" I went inside and was amazed to see these things. I was thinking of buying both, but I agree with the consensus here, $25 is a little steep, perhaps $15. It would look cool sitting right next to my original Coleco tabletops, though!
9. I have the 96 in 1 from Mike Doyle installed in my Pac-man and I love it- the only complaint (and it's minor) is that since Pac-man Plus used custom color proms for the green/teal colored mazes, and to use the 96 in 1 kit, you need to revert to the original Pac-Man/Ms. Pac proms, Pac-man Plus has to be played with a Pac-Man style blue maze. Does anybody know if the other multi-pac kit have this issue, or can you play Pac-man Plus with a green maze... and is "Pengoman" the same as Pengo? BTW, I never cared for Pirahna, but having Mr. TNT and Eyes on the 96 in 1 kit, not to mention Pengo, all the Pac maze hacks, and a great Space Invaders clone, Alien Armada makes the 96 in 1 worth it!
10. I've had similar problems with CBS' Omega Race for the 2600. Bought 2 of them, both of them non-working even after cleaning. The third one I bought worked fine.
11. The cabinet, with a real monitor installed, would be nice for a cabaret MAME game. That's about all i can say good about this thing. The tiny TV with washed-out colors mounted in the cabinet, and the cheap-feeling joysticks and buttons is enough to turn me off from spending even $100 for it.
12. Well, I stopped at Target to look at this thing today, and thanks to the tiny monitor and use of cardboard on the bezel, it totally reminded me of just a store display that they used to use back in the 80's to demonstrate home video games. It didn't give me the "feel" of playing an arcade machine at all. I thought the TV monitor looked washed out (it might have needed to be adjusted, if possible), and the joysticks and buttons did feel like the JAKS Pac-Man stick. Of the few games i tried, Satan's Hollow had the feel and look of a port- not the original, Robotron and Joust seemed okay, Wizard of Wor didn't have the stars in the background. Rampage seemed okay, but still seemed like a port- not authentic. Same for Bubbles, which was hard to control with the joysticks. I wish I could buy just the empty cabinet, and add my own stuff to it- it would make a nice looking MAME cabaret, but that's about all it's good for.
13. Nice. The specific product page is here. The cabinets are apparently also expandable with Arcade Legends Add-On Game Packs. Still no "real" info on actual system hardware, etc. It's a curious selection of games, at least. Sounds like licensing success has been hit-or-miss, but they're in good with Atari, Capcom, and Ultracade. From the site: 950484 First of all, I LOVE the Arcade Legends artwork and the custom menu front end (although if you have alot of games on there, it might take awhile to rotate through all the marquees). However game play is everything, and there's just something about the emulation or game play on Arcade Legends that just doesn't "feel" right. Maybe I'm just used to the controls on the original machines, but I can't seem to do nearly as well playing some of the games I tried on the AL machine as when I'm playing on the original cabinet. Last week I took my family to a local indoor waterpark, and in the arcade, they had an Arcade Legends machine, I had to try it out, since it had Thief on it (one of my all-time favorites) I have the original Thief cabinet in my game room, so I'm familiar with the game play and I had a hard time controlling my car using the AL controllers. Centipede and Millipede don't seem as smooth, either. Don't get me wrong- I love the packaging, and if the price was right, would be tempted in getting it, but like everyone said, MAME does a better job, for less money.
14. You know, I was thinking about doing two MAME cabs, one for horizontal and one for vertical games. Then I thought about the space issue, so I thought about a rotating monitor, but that seemed like such a pain. Then I got this idea- what about a cocktail MAME with controls on 3 or all four sides? Then instead of rotating the monitor, you can just rotate yourself to another side of the table for horizontal or vertical games!
15. I just got a jamma game with a 39 in one jamma board installed, and that's one of the games. I don't remember it in the arcade back in the 80's, but I really like it, now that I tried it. Actually, it kind of reminds me of Activision's Beamrider, which was supposed to be inspired by Tempest.
16. As far as 3-D Tic-Tac-Toe, don't worry. The original cartridge version also did this. So it isn't a glitch. 963718 Yes, the computer does that to preserve processing power while it's "thinking" about it's next move. I know Checkers and I believe Chess does that too.
17. Here's a Towers on eBay right now http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...mMakeTrack=true
18. Please tell us the name brand of the LCD tv you own, so we know which brand to avoid buying.
19. I don't " feel threatened by a game like this". I simply wanted to know why no one is making a Bible game that isn't candy canes and gum drops. God cast Satan out of heaven, sent plagues, parted seas, killed entire nations, sent his son to die painfully and then brought him back from the dead. He sent a whale to catch a guy who didn't do what he said, killed every first born thing in Egypt, helped a sheppard boy kill a giant with a rock, gave one man the physical strength to knock over a palace by pushing on the pillars, and on and on. Meanwhile, the Christian videogame makers seem to think that the only thing they can do to get that message across is to quiz people on it. Come on. I don't care if they make a thousand quiz games, but don't try to tell me that the Bible (read as a true story) implies that all God ever did was write a book and ask people to recite it. Why is the Christian anything industry so afraid to portray everything that the Bible talks about. The quiz game is a great idea for kids and Biblical Alex Trebecks, but there is nothing wrong with a RTS game that puts you in charge of the march from Egypt to the promised land is there? Did it happen in the Bible? Yes, then why not let people learn about the Bible by playing it. It's been in enough movies, it's hardly like it's still too sacred to talk about in any way besides in a book. 958029 As I mentioned in my last post- it's not just a trivia game, that's just one part of it, if you play the "game show" format- it has trivia questions, but also mixed with several action mini-games, ala Mario Party. If you just want to play the mini games, and skip the trivia stuff, you can do that too. Up to four people can play at a time. By the way, here are some Christian games that are not "candy canes and gum drops," as you call it. This company made a first-person style shooter, and other games aimed at fans of Doom and Myst: http://www.n-lightning.com/games.htm http://www.virtuegames.com/derek/
20. Well we got a chance to play this tonight with my kids and we had a blast! It's alot like Mario Party, and has a "game show" format. There are trivia questions, but each round has several mini-games based on Old Testament stories, some of which are hilarious, all the while current Christian rock and pop hits play in the background. It's a great family game.
21. The DS Atari retro cart has Warlords on it and it plays decently on the stylus control. I too am disappointed as I saw these a few weeks back but passed on them (finances at the time not info). Now they will stay there.....ho hum..(plugs in Flashback 2 ). Cassidy 958026 I'm sorry, you're right- I forgot about that one, probably because of all the silly "updates" to the classic games on it, I forgot that it included the original versions, too.
22. Well, I just went over to Gamestop to pick up the Taito Legends collection for PS2 and saw the Bible Game for the first time... and ended up buying it. It's more than a trivia game, there are several skill, puzzle (Tetris-type) and mini-arcade style games included based on Bible stories, as well. There are also several hit songs by top Christian artists like the Newsboys and Tobymac. I haven't had a chance to play it yet, but it looks like a decent game that I can actually play with my kids, and God forbid... maybe even learn something while being entertained. I don't know some people feel "threatened" by a game like this, you don't have to buy it, and nobody is taking away your games that glorify rape, murder, stealing, blood, gore, and sex, which seems to be the majority of games today.
23. I posted a big review of these games over a month ago: http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=75188 Anyway, here's my synopsis: Millipede- not bad at all- actually pretty close to the arcade version, except the spiders have a tendency to "stop" and hesitate instead of constantly moving Super Breakout- not bad, with the game play options of the arcade, like progressive, cavity, etc. Just not as much fun to play without a paddle or analog control. Lunar Lander- again, not a bad version of the arcade game, and it's kind of neat to see another new release of this long forgotten game. Problem for me is, it was never a game that excited me. Centipede- what's going on with the graphics? The graphics look like the "updated" graphics from the Genesis version. This is fine if they would've included an original version, as well, but they didn't. In another weird twist, you can change the background of the playfield, to include the Centipede graphic from the arcade cabinet.... Why? I don't know... I also found it a little too easy, even at the harder level. You're better off with the Centipede from the Atari Anniversary collection for GBA. Breakout- not bad, but like Super Breakout, it's not alot of fun without a paddle controller. Like Centipede, you can change the background to an image of the Breakout cabinet artwork- isn't it hard enough to follow the ball without anything in the background? Warlords- the best of the 3 games on this cartridge, with nice graphics that are pretty close to the arcade version, including the grassy hills of the backdrop. Even without paddle or analog control, it's not too bad, and pretty easy to control your shots. My only complaint is that gameplay is not 100% accurate to the arcade- for example, when you kill an opponent, a new fireball is supposed to appear and enter into gameplay, and this doesn't always happen. New fireballs appear only when time goes by, and nobody is killed. I also suspect that collision detection is a little off, as I could swear on some occasions, that the ball didn't even completely enter the castle, and the warlord died. Still, it's the only portable version Warlords ever available (to my knowledge), so if you need a quick Warlords fix, it's not bad. Pong- what can I say- it's Pong. I do think it's a little more challenging that the "updated" Pong that was released for Game Boy Color a few years ago. On that one, I usually can beat the CPU at every game. This one is a little harder, and I haven't beat the computer yet. Again, a paddle controller is the best way to play Pong. Asteroids- not bad at all, close to the arcade, but if you already have the Atari Anniversary for GBA, you have a more accurate version of Asteroids already. Yar's Revenge- graphically, looks very close to the Atari 2600 version. There are only 3 gameplay options, and it plays pretty close to the original version. I found that it's fairly easy to avoid the "swirl" shot, though. Doesn't completely "feel" like the 2600 version, but pretty close, and it's fun. If you like Yar's, you'll probably like it as a substitute for the real thing, when you're on the road. Marble Madness- Looks good, but next to impossible to play without a trackball. Klax- Very good- but then again, it would be pretty hard to mess up Klax
24. http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=I&game_id=8186 I always liked this one in the arcade
25. "The Jerk" You could walk around in your underwear with your pants around your ankles, and try to collect as many things as possible.
