Hey Dracon,
I guess that great Othello game is "Super Reversion", published in Analog magazine (somewhere in issues 60-69) and covered dozens of times in other magazines... greetings, Andreas.
-
Well,
I have that "Dark Horse" game in my collection, the other games maybe also. E-mail me, when interested (amp#abbuc*de)...
My favorite Basic games?!? Well, I love the arcade-like games "Schatzhoehle" (treasure cavern) by Peter Bluemer, a type in listing from Happy Computer magazine; the Joust-clone "Straussenkampf" by Oliver Cyranka and "Hugojagd XL" by Stefan Dorndorf;
My favorite economy games in Basic are "Safryland", "Santa Paravia" and "Fuerstentum" (here in Germany all well-known as "Kaiser" clones, allthough some of them are much older than Kaiser)...
greetings, Andreas.

Hmmm,
some small info about CIN?!? Well, it was done by a (former?) member of APC (Atari Programming Champions). Thus CIN means Champions INterlace. It uses a combination of Gr. 15 and Gr. 11, thus 4x16 or 16x4 colors, or to be more exact 16 colors in 4 brightnesses. So every line of a picture can have up to 64 colors, whereas the whole screen can have up to 128 colors. But since Gr. 15 has a resolution of 160x192 and Gr. 11 only 80x192 there are always some areas in the picture that look rather blocky. More info about CIN can be found in the CIN 1.2 description, written by the author himself. If you are interested in a copy of the CIN viewers/colorizers (vers. 1.1 and 1.2), as well as the description and many CIN pix, simply send me an e-mail: amp#abbuc*de greetings, Andreas.
P.S.: Ofcourse CIN uses the full CPU power/time, thus the pix cannot be used in games (only as title pictures)...
-
Alas,
CIN vers. 1.2 is buggy, it does not save uncompressed CIN pix correct (should be 132 sectors, not 123 sectors). So use it only to load+save compressed CIN (*.CCI) pix. Therefore use version 1.1 to load+save uncompressed CIN pix... -Andreas.
-
Well,
this is the CIN pic. I refered to in another reply. It is nice, but alas buggy !! It has only 123 sectors in length, whereas uncompressed CIN pix should always have a length of 132 sectors. Result: When you try to load the picture with CINview 1.1 or 1.2 you get an Error $88 (136)... and then the screen displays garbage... So, greetings to the author of this picture, please save it again with the correct length... -Andreas.
-
Hmmm,
"Follow the White Rabbit!" - where do I know this from ?!? Ah yes, memory serves me, it is from the animated movie Watership Down... Anyway, Basix is a very funny demo, job well done Raster ! greetings, Andreas Magenheimer.
P.S.: Watership Down is an animated movie from 1982 or 1983 or so...
(here in Germany known as: Watership Down / Unten am Fluss)

Well,
the Forever 5 software image also contains one CIN picture. Alas, it is buggy: it has only 123 sectors, whereas uncompressed CIN pix have a length of 132 sectors. I think I know why this happened: CIN 1.1 allows only uncompressed pix, loads and saves 132 sectors; CIN 1.2 allows compressed pix as well, saves and loads compressed pix correct, loads uncompressed pix correct, but does not save uncompressed pix correct - it saves them with 123 instead of 132 sectors...
The funny thing is, that as long as the picture is in memory one can easily load version 1.1 and save the picture in uncompressed format and then load version 1.2 and save in compressed format (or the other way around). But, if the picture is not in memory, loading an uncompressed CIN picture with only 123 sectors results in an error ($88 or 136) and then displays garbage. Of course, since I got this CIN picture from the Forever5 disk, it was not in memory but had to be loaded from disk and thus appeared as garbage. The only solution I had then, was loading the CIN / Gr. 15+11 picture as an interlaced Gr. 9+11 pic. via Apacview. This way I could guess at last what the picture should have looked like (because of its much lower resolution then)...
maybe someone can contact the author (who has the original picture) and tell him to save the CIN pic again with version 1.1 uncompressed or version 1.2 compressed... greetings, Andreas.
-
Well,
the funny thing is, that if you wanna boot Gauntlet only, you have to boot without Basic. If you wanna boot/load the Deeper Dungeons, you have to boot Gauntlet with Basic first and then insert the Deeper Dungeon disk(since the Deeper Dungeon disk contains a patch program, written in Atari basic)... maybe that was your problem ?!? -Andreas.
-
Well,
I think that Chris Thompson (hopefully the lead singer of Manfred Mann`s Earth Band, not just someone with the same name) did some music for Atari in the 90s - for Atari Jaguar. Afaik, he did the music for Hoverstrike CD (Unconquered lands; recorded as audio tracks, so one can listen to them with any CD player)... Nowadays you also find many pop, rock and hip hop bands that mention Atari in their music videos (with Pong, Pacman, etc.). Not to forget the many films and series at tv and cinema where Atari is mentioned...
I also remember that Atari often had "musical guests" at their big shows in Germany in the early 80s (groups like Fleetwood Mac and others). They did not sing anything Atari related, but boy that was pretty cool then, visiting an Atari show and listening to some great rock or pop groups...
-Andreas.
-
Well,
Atari itself (as a daughter of Time-Warner or Warner Bros.) did record several Vinyl Singles and LP`s. I have two Vinyl singles at home, they are "Pacman Fieber" (german version of Pacman Fever!) and "Space Invaders". From a friend (Sijmen Schouten, author of MyIDE) I got several audio CD`s with approx. 20-26 Vinyl singles, he recorded. Alas, I only have an old PC at home, that cannot burn CD`s (how to do that under MS DOS 6.22 and a 240MB harddisk?) nor MP3`s... So, I cannot send any copies via Internet... -Andreas.
-
Well,
at least "Scramble" is available as an Atari Vinyl Single (those strange black things for the phonogram with 45 RpM), Super Cobra is not...
-Andreas.

Well,
I owned both the disk and tape version of Karate International (or International Karate), well known as World Karate Championships in America. The versions I had were produced by System 3 and sold by various companies and vendors. the Cheats "ADZM", Break Key and such all worked in both versions. Alas, the tape version had only 3 scenarios per side (3 on side a, 3 on side b, thats six scenarios overall). Think the disk version had 7 scenarios/backgrounds... -Andreas.
P.S.: There are also cracked versions of the game, if it is a bootdisk, then it is most likely the disk version, wheras if it is a disk-file, then it is most likely one of the tape versions (side a or b)...
-
Wow,
the page loads as fast as my atari tape recorder. It is only missing the typical "beeeep, beeep" sound...
-Andreas. -
Well,
there exists an A8FAQ maintained by Michael Current and published every 2 months at comp.sys.atari.8bit It contains a section about paddle programs (I know, because I wrote most of it)... greetings, Andreas.

Well,
depends on the DOS - and as you know, there are quite many Atari DOS versions... just some examples:
- 90k: DOS 1.0, DOS 2.0s, DOS A+, DOS XL (older versions), DOS 2.5, DOS 3.0, DOS 4.0, MyDOS, Turbo-DOS, Sparta-DOS, Bewe-DOS, Mach-DOS, Super-DOs, Top-DOS, Bibo-DOS, DOS II+D Ver. 4.5, DOS II+D Ver. 6.x, Smart-DOS, Happy-DOS, Warp-Speed-DOS, DOS XE, etc. etc.;
-130k: DOS 2.5, Turbo-DOS, Bibo-DOS, Mach-DOs, Top-DOS, MyDOS, Sparta-DOS, Bewe-DOS, Super-DOS, DOS II+D Ver. 4.5, DOS II+D VER. 6.x, DOS 3.0, DOS 4.0, DOS XE, etc. etc.
- 180k: DOS 2.0d, DOS XL (newer versions), Turbo-DOS, Bibo-DOs, Super-DOS, Top-DOS, My-DOS, Smart-DOS, Sparta-DOs, Bewe-DOS, DOS II+D Ver. 6.x, DOS XE, DOS 4, Happy-DOS, Warp-Speed-DOS, Mach-DOS, etc. etc.
- 360k: Turbo-DOS, Bibo-DOS, Super-DOS, My-DOs, Top-DOS, Sparta-DOS, Bewe-DOS, DOS XE, DOS 4, etc.
- 720k: My-DOS, Top DOS (Prof.), Sparta-DOS; DOS 4 ? (at least a patched version of DOS 4)...
- 1440k: My-DOS (requires a patch!), TOP-DOS Prof., Sparta-DOS;
all other densities, up to 16 Megabyte partitions: MyDOS, Top-DOS Prof., Sparta-DOS;
Well, thats enough, isn`t it ?!? greetings, Andreas.
P.S.: Please note that there are quite some incompatibilities concerning the disk format (DOS 2.x, DOS 3, DOS 4, Sparta, DOS XE, etc.) and the disk density (used/unused sectors in Medium/Enhanced density for example)...
-
Well,
if you use MyDOS 4.50 or 4.51 then the Ramdisk driver must be named Autorun.Sys. With version 4.53 or newer one can use any filename and the extender .AR0 for the first Autorun, .AR1 for the second, etc. up to .AR9 for the 10th autorun file. By the way, the original Ramboot3 program is very buggy, there are several patches available as well as a completely new Ramdisk driver for MyDOS by Lee Barnes (MyRAMD1.COM and MyRAMD2.COM). Want to know more about the Ramboot bugs ?!? Ok, the Ramdisk driver is *relatively* slow, a faster version has been done by the author of XL2 (John Picken?). Next, in some cases the ramdisk driver (or MyDOS) may format your disk in drive 1, rather than formatting drive 8 / the ramdisk. Since this could not be corrected with only a new ramdisk driver, Lee Barnes made an update of MyDOS (version 4.54 and 4.55) as well as a complete new ramdisk driver.
Hmmm, I do not know where these programs are available today. Lee was so kind and sent them to me via e-mail. For some time the programs were also available at Mathy van Nisselroy`s homepage (but I am not sure if they still are)... So, if you are interested in the update of MyDOs and the new Ramdisk driver, simply e-mail me: amp#abbuc*de (where # = @ and * = .) greetings, Andreas.
P.S.: For a little bug test, do the following: Take a new/unused disk (or disk image), format it with MyDOS, write MyDOS on disk (configured for no Ramdisk!), copy the Ramdisk driver as an Autorun file or *.ARx on this disk or image. Now boot the new created disk or image and watch MyDOS formatting this disk automatically... Nice Bug, isn`t it ?!? Do the same with DOS 2.5 - and it will not format your disk...
-
Yep,
I even know the programmer (Mirko Sobe) and met him several times at various Atari meetings here in Germany. The BOSS-X is a nice sort of desktop or GUI, alas everything is written in Turbo-Basic XL (no chance for a cart. version of BOSS-X). Nevertheless, Mirko uses his GUI on a 16MB harddisk under MyDOS 4.5x ... greetings, Andreas.
P.S.: There is a german manual on the BOSS disk. Afaik, Mirko also tried to do an english version of BOSS (not sure if it is still available)...
-
Well,
Dynakillers by GMG (Slovakia) is already available as a cartridge at Video 61 (Lance Ringquist)... Hmm, I forgot to mention some applications (some of them require a DOS, no problem for a cart...):
- Fampy 6.1 (a MOD or better MD8 player);
- Inertia 4.5 (a MOD player);
- Megaplayer 1.6 ( a sound player);
- Megaplayer 2.0 (a snd player and gfx viewer);
- Visage 2.7 ( a gfx viewer);
- Analogs text-Editor T:Edit (by BBK);
and some more applications which I use quite often... -Andreas.
-
Well,
I guess you drive your harddisk with SpartaDOs - don`t you ?!? alas, most if not all programs by Jeff Potter (Apacview, Jview, Colorview, ILBMread, Degasread, etc.) use the RAM under the OS, so with the disk versions of Sparta, they will not work... Maybe you can give Bewe-DOS a try. Just copy the file XBW130.DOS to your harddisk and make it bootable. Then load any RGB converter (like apacview or Jview) with that (sparta compatible) DOS, this should work... -Andreas.
-
Well,
you also forgot the german DOS versions:
- Bibo-DOS (by Compyshop, max. DSDD / 360k; supports 320k memory);
- Turbo-DOS (by Reitershan, max. DSDD / 360k; supports 320k memory);
- X-DOS (updated version of DOS II+D by Stefan Dorndorf, max. DSDD / 360k; supports up to 1 MB; now DOS 2.5 ED or MyDOS ED comp.);
- DOS-XF (pre-version of Turbo-DOS, DSDD and 320k memory);
and a few others. Thus I selected "other", since I use Turbo-DOs most often... greetings, Andreas.

Yes agreed !!
You can convert / port any AMC game to any other computer or console you wish. Some of the AMC games are already ports (Tales, Bilbo, etc.)... You don`t have to ask me for this. The only limitation is for the A8 - if you port any of the games to A8 cart. format please be so kind and give me a copy of it (meaning: give me one complete cart per game)... thats all. greetings, Andreas Magenheimer.
-
Well,
I would like to see the following games on cart:
- Alternate Reality
- Bard`s Tale
- Elite
- Herbert 1+2
- Tales of Dragons and Cavemen
- Bilbo
- 3d-Pac
- Conan (by datasoft)
- Winter Challenge / Winter Olympiad 1988
(disk/ tape by Tynesoft)
- Winter Events (by Anco)
- The Brundles (by KE-Soft)
- Taipei ( a great Shanghai/Mahjong clone by PPP)
- Kenny Dalglish Soccer Manager (by Zeppelin Games)
- the "other" soccer manager (World Soccer?) by Zeppelin Games;
- Mirax Force by tynesoft
- Henry`s House by mastertronic
- Mouse Trap (the comic-like game) by micro-Value / tynesoft
- Fort Apocalypse - should be available as an XL/XE cart !!
- Kangaroo (originally by SUN if I remember correctly)
should also be available as an XL/XE cart!!
- Demon Attack - as an XL/XE cart !!
- Space Harrier - asap...
- Super mario 3 asap...
- a good conversion of Sonix...
Enough for now. If you need the AMC games as .COM files (except for Herbert 1+2), let me know... greetings, Andreas Magenheimer.
P.S.: Yes - I am a cart collector (but only A8 carts)...
-
Hello !!
Maybe you guys do not know, but when Armin Stuermer (chief of AMC-Verlag) died at Feb. 5th 1998, I got all the rights of the AMC programs. Thus I am the copyright holder of Jinks (the AMC version), as well as of Herbert 1+2. Anyway - you are allowed to create cart versions of any AMC game IF YOU GIVE ME A COPY OF THAT/THESE CART/S... Thats all I ask for. You may even sell the carts at any price you want, but as said before I would like to get a copy !! Furthermore I would like (!) to see no hacker/cracker intros in the cart versions ("cracked by ..."). thats fair - isn`t it ?!? greetings from Germany, Andreas Magenheimer.
-
Well,
I guess it is the version from AMC-Verlag, Germany... You can read the story behind it here at atari-age forum... The game has 4 levels (each with 4 colors plus dithering), a title screen and a title music. I am not sure if Lance used the easy title screen (without a title picture intro) or the enhanced title screen (with title picture intro)... Lets wait and see...
After you have finished the four levels, the game gets harder and faster - but no new levels appear. afaik, the game also has an interlude (I don`t like it), where one can "choose" which level to play next...
Anyway, the game was originally programmed around 1984-1986 (allthough the copyright says 1991 - that was when AMC Verlag got the rights for their own and unreleased game back!) and in my eyes it is quite boring, allthough I am the copyright holder of all AMC programs...
-Andreas.

Well,
maybe you did not know, there are two versions of Capture the Flag:
1) the phantastic 3D version by Sirius
2) the simple 2D type-in listing by Antic or Analog
Both are named "Capture the Flag" and do have the same gameplay (except that the 3D version is much much better in my eyes)... -Andreas.
