  1. Well,

here is another demo influenced by Uridium. This was one of the intros for Abbuc Magazin 20 in 1990 (there were two more intros, one by P.Sabath and the winner intro by Gnome Design). The demo/intro was made 30 years ago by D.Johannsen, who is also the author of Yoomp, errrm, Jump!

     Jump!

It was never intended to be a game, just an intro for Abbuc magazine and therefore it should have been short and not require the full diskette...

  2. Hmmmm,

looks like I do not like most of the available Uridium clones, so far we have these on the A8:

    - Astromeda

    - Mirax Force

    - Oxygene

    - The Last Guardian

    - Thunderfox

    - Vanadium

    - Oxygene Be / Oxygene 2

    - and one more...

One more: Well, Uridium is also just a clone - a clone of "Dreadnought Factor".

I've been wondering - as features and amount of data grow, kinda of starting to realize not being able have all at of it once on stock 48k atari. It is definitely not final thing but what do you think about having sound and music on XL devices and no sound at all on 48k?

    Well,

it's always a good thing for a game, if you can choose between music or silence (or sfx) by pressing a key ;-) Thus, even if one has 64k RAM, it would be nice if one can choose to play the 48k or 64k version.

And maybe in a few months you realize that you require min. 128k RAM and the question becomes redundant ;-)

Of course, I can only speculate that all this is the reason for tmp's photo collage until he replies to my PM. I'm a little puzzled, since the SIDE loader which runs on his own hardware has the exact same UI as the SIDE3 loader, and yet he suddenly felt inspired to present a comparison hours after I uploaded a video describing how to use SIDE3.

Maybe Mr. Robot is right and tmp only wanted to show that the SIDE3 loader also works on the AVG cart ?!?

As you've already said, both AVG and SIDE-3 carts are so good, there is nothing of substance to complain about.

AVG, cart with amazing features, really could use some esthetically updates. Side loader is milestones ahead when it comes to User Interface and looks.

I never scroll through windows, but simply type a keyword or part of that, so I don't care for screens with more titles listed. Search facility on Side loader is really fast. On a cf or sd card with thousands of titles 24 lines is still not much...

Why did you post that comparison?

    My guess...

    AVG* cart. simple screen display...

pro: displays more titles, displays more chars. of the full title name (afair does not scroll)

con: looks extremely simple (cheap, antique like a typewriter...)

    * has a search function; black text on white background (some prefer that-readability);

    SIDEB* cart. prof. screen display:

    pro: looks very good/professional (eye-catcher)

con: displays less titles, displays less chars. of the full title name (think it scrolls?)

    * has a search function; white text on black background (some prefer that-readability);

My subjective opinion: If you know the contents of your card and simply type a keyword or part of that, then the number of titles on the card or the length of the title (chars. displayed) for sure does not matter. But, errrm, let's say you just copied someone else's card or downloaded thousands of titles from the internet (or e.g. hundreds of AVF movies and PDM soundfiles) and do not know the content and therefore want to scroll through the contents, then a display with more titiles or more chars for the title name is maybe better- isn't it ?!?

On the other hand, after a while you surely know (or partially know) what's on your card, but as someone once said, to be able to successfully search for something, you already have to know what you are searching (part of the name, etc.). I am not sure if the search function of the AVG or SIDEB cart. is case sensitive or not, if it accepts SAGA as well as S.A.G.A., etc. so you may have to type in search strings precisely.

(That's something I quite often fail at atarimania's search function and therefore have to search manually by going through all titles under a certain letter, especially if I do not know if a title is one word or two words, two words with hyphen or two words with space, a title with the article "the" or without article, etc. - and if one of these things is wrong, then I get zero results...)

  6. Found some small "errors" in the comparison table, regarding AVG cart...

    a) regarding CAS it says no, but it should be a yes with § note (can be loaded with optional/additional SIO-cable)

    b) plugs into says cartridge slot, one could add "(+SIO-port if optional SIO-cable is added)"

    c) for speed, besides very fast one could also add "(+SIO-speed if optional SIO-cable is added)"

    "Yar's Revenge"
     "Yar's Revenve"

    Good Lord.

The name is "Yars' Revenge", the apostrophe is in the wrong place in both accounts, and the latter word is 'Revenge', not 'Revenve'.

Why do so many people STILL get this wrong after so many decades, when it's so easy to research and find the actual name, when you have the internet at your fingertips?

Have some respect, and type the names correctly. Surely it's not too much to ask, is it?

"Yar's Strike" should be "Yars' Strike". It's not about an individual Yar, it's the whole RACE of Yars. Why do people still not know this? How long does it have to take until people get it right?

"It's a remake from the classic Yar's revenge from the atari 2600. "

    So much wrong here.

It's a remake _OF_ the classic "Yars' Revenge" (apostrophe in the wrong place, 'Revenge' should be capitalized) ON (or even FOR) the Atari 2600 (Atari should be capitalized, as it is a NAME, have some respect, please!)

Do you think you can just type "from" instead of the correct articles in english and get away with it?

Maybe you should not only read what he is writing, but also notice where he is coming from, e.g. take a look to the left where it says "Location: Karlsruhe, Germany".  I would accept your complaint if he had written here in german language (ignoring the fact that this is an american forum), but since he wrote everything in (d)english, you could at least understand what he wanted to say...

It is not easy for us germans to use the correct prepositions in english ("from" instead of "of" is one of many typical german mistakes and there are dozens of others). Besides, I am also using the wrong english prepositions quite often and make other spelling and grammar mistakes. Luckily for us, german grammar is much harder, hahaha!

Huh, I just received my Venture cartridge from Video61 yesterday, and it does have the sound problem starting after the tune plays once in the hallway. Once, it even glitched into an unplayable state at the same time the sound went screwy in the hallway. So, I suppose there's still a bug.

Hmmm, is it possible to switch-off the ingame sound (e.g. in the menu/titlescreen) and then maybe get rid of (or bypass) the sound problem that way ? I do not own that game and therefore cannot test...

Personally I think if people release buggy software and don't fix it in a reasonable period of time (two years is WAY more than reasonable) it is fine to dump the cart and post it here for the community to fix. You've done everything you can to get a working product from them but still don't have it, it seems fair to ask for help from others at that point.

Lawyers of Atari, Activision/Blizzard, Disney, Electronic Arts, Nintendo, UbiSoft, Sega, Sony, etc. will be very happy when you do that. But you surely will not be happy afterwards...

(On the other hand, we are not talking about actual PC/console software, but about A8 software here...)

Told this a million times to Peteym5. This is exact the reason, as long as they do cart only, that I will never buy a single game from V61 ever again.

    Their games are

    * NOT betatested on REAL hardware

    * NOT betatested by skilled people who try to find real existing problems

    * proven FULL OF BUGS

    * Unfixable since on a fixed medium (a cart!)

It's a pity that you found out after you bought the game. It is even more a pity that @video61atarisales does not do ANYTHING to prevent this crappy experience in the future. They should stop with their outdated 'cart only' policy, since games (and any other software) is ALWAYS buggy, and ALWAYS needs to be fixed. Even with a decent test phase things might go wrong in the future. With a disk or file, or even a FLASH CART (and then sending a flasher for updates of course!) all these trouble could be prevented.

It is unbelievable that reported bugs (like this sound issue you describe) are NOT fixed, even though these bugs are reported OVER and OVER again. The bug is not new, at least 2 years ago I already mentioned at Peteym5 (author of game).

Total disrespect to customers. My advice: never buy anything from V61, unless they change their attitude towards customers.

They simply sell you a game with bugs, while they KNOW it is buggy. Sounds almost like a crime to me.

    Well,

simply replace all mentions of Peteym5 and Vide61 with Atari or Sega or Nintendo or ... and read the text again. It is still true...  ;-)

It becomes even more true if you instead use "Atari" and "Atari Jaguar", hahaha...  ;-)

  11. Today I got FS II as a Hong Kong type cart. (okay, the label still says made in Taiwan, but the cart case was a Hong Kong one). To my surprise it had two thick manuals which I only knew from the sublogic disk release. So I looked at my collection and the new purchase and found this:

    - two thick manuals, a) Pilot's Operating handbook and Airplane Flight manual, b) Flight Physics and Aircraft control, for the XE cart. released by Atari in 1987 (shown e.g. at atarimania); they used glossy paper there; ink appears black on the paper, screenshots extremely dark (e.g. on the title cover);

    - only one thick manual (Pilot's Operating handbook and Airplane flight manual) for the XE cart. released by Atari in 1988 (not shown at atarimania); they did not use glossy paper; ink appears in dark grey on the paper, screenshots not so dark (e.g. on the title cover);

Since I could not find any differences regarding contents (except the last page / back cover which says 1987 on one and 1988 on the other manual) my question is, am I only missing the second manual in my collection which was made by Atari in 1988 -or- was Atari so cheap and once more saving costs by only printing one of the two FS II manuals in 1988 ?

I recomended Homesoft www where you can found many games greatly rebuilded from atr to one xex which works with 128kb. For example there are karateka, Koronis rift and may others, just write to search window 130, 256 or 320 :)

    http://www.mushca.com/f/atari/index.php?idx=9

Yep, as of yet no entries for 576 and only one entry for 1MB (Atari Blast). But many entries for 128k and 320k...

  13. Haha, caught!

You probably got it from the 1MB image "Demos22.ATR" which I did several years ago for Sven Gleich. The megademo images were updated by me with MyPicoDOS and I also added dozens of new demos. Some of these demos were originally multi-file/multi-disk demos which I simply made into one file demos by using DOS and copy + append function.

With many demos (e.g. Numen) this worked fine, but alas, it seems not to work with Pacem in Terris. Guess I never watched the single file version until the end, so I never noticed that it is buggy. Hopefully someone can create a fully/bug-free working XEX, e.g. by using the multi-ATR version above...

  14. Yep,

I also read somewhere that a 1MB RAM upgrade cannot be done as pure external (PBI/ECI) device, it requires a few cables to be soldered internally...

But maybe that was (only) true some years (or decades) ago and nowadays there are new possibilities, e.g. add a RPi like device to the PBI/ECI (or a box similar to the 1090) and you not only have lots of XRAM, but also dozens of other connections or upgrades...?!?

  15. Afaik,

all Covox programs work with $D600, but only a few ones (e.g. NeoTracker 1.8) work with other mem. areas like e.g. $D280.

We already had a discussion in the RAM320XE (+ Covox) or IDE-2 (+ Covox) topic that $D600 would be the better solution - not only because more software supports that, but also because $D280 is the Pokey shadow register and therefore creates a lot of unwanted noise.

But maybe this is not the case with the PokeyMax board ? Cannot tell, since I do not have Covox or a PokeyMax board...

You can find some Covox software (e.g. posts #5, #12 and #14) here:

  16. An external AIO board - all in one:

    (for PBI or Cart+ECI)

    - XRAM (256k or 512k or 1024k)

    - Covox

    - Stereo-Pokey

    - Harddisk interface or SIO2xyz interface

    - whatever I forgot

The RAM 320 / 576 XE by ctirad already had XRAM onboard and was optionally also available with Covox. RAM 320XE Maybe someone could use this as a starting point for a larger AIO board...?!?

  17. Welllllll,

the Abbuc magazine is the diskette (since the beginning of Abbuc) and you are right that some basic information, like membership expiration, member number, etc. is not to be found on the diskette. BUT: This information is not only printed on the envelope, it is also in the paper-magazine... afaik, since paper-magazine 139...

Read page 2 of the paper magazine:

    (directly under the contents)

    Paypal-Adresse

Auf dem Briefumschlag stehen die Mitgliedsnummer und das Datum, bis zu dem Deine Mitgliedschaft bezahlt bzw. überfällig ist.

=> Which translates to (in my own words, deutsch+english=denglish):

    head of the club

    Sascha Kriegel

    adress

    phone number

    E-Mail

The membership is 2,60€ each month (31,20€ each year).*

(* Note, that's the price for german members, international members have to pay 2,67€ each month or  2,67€ x12 = 32,04€ each year; yes it is 0,84 Euro more for internat. members)

    bank

    IBAN

    Swift-BIC

    Paypal adress

On the envelope your member number is printed and the date up to which you paid or until your payment is (over)due.

This information on page 2 is available since paper-magazine 139, afaik... and errrrm, at least the paper-magazine 141 was available in english, not sure if the paper-magazines 139, 140, 142 were/are already available in english. (I started to do some translations german-english, but then was very busy with issue 142 and special-issue 52. Maybe I will do some more translations in the next weeks, but I absolutely need someone to proof-read my translations, since I use denglish and weird grammar quite often...)

EDIT: Just read page 2 of the english issue 141 of the Abbuc magazine and there they have all the details printed (in english) I mentioned here. And they "rounded" the membership to 32,00 Euro (I guess in USD, pounds, etc. it will not be such an even sum anymore)...
