Funny stuff!

An over simplification on my part. What is the 256k for that is mentioned on Side site? On-board SpartaDOS X Real-Time Clock Compact Flash card slot Switchable loader and SDX modes Programmable "SIDE button" 256KB external flash application cartridge space With that in mind does MyIDE load ATR?
-
So Side 2 is basically myide 2 but with added RTC. Does side2 load atr without U1MB? I like how it can cycle through tagged atrs so that takes care of disk swaps.
-
Perfect info, thx. Ill dig deeper into Side.
-
I also want the speed gained from the cart/expanion implementations. Neglected to mention that in op.
-
Thanks. I guess for ultimate portability, atarimax is the way to go, sacrificing rtc. Not a huge deal. Side seems to need ultimate 1m to be complete so that leaves the option for ide 2+ Using it externally perhaps in custom box. If i do that, its been a while, is the XL and XE expansion bus compatable? Seems like they are slightly different.

Thanks for the input. 360k was part of the concern. The bigger part was actually getting a program, any program, to the atari to save to a disk.

Anyone know of any Atari or Vintage computing groups in these areas?

I've been put of the Atari community for some time. Im looking to get an interface for using flash storage (SD / CF). There are several options out there and I'm a little up in the air about the best route to take. IDE PLUS 2.0. I really like what I have read about this,, RTC good. SD or CF good. Do these only come naked (no case)? I want my son to use it and dont want it inadvertently shorted. Atarimax MyIDE II. I like this to. Extra sram a plus, usable in reality? Are there any drawbacks to cartridge based interface? Whats different than the expansion ports? RTC? Side 2. I like what Ive seen with this as well. Its encased, a bonus. RTC? For any of them, Here is what I want to do. 1. Use it as a hard drive. Read and write from apps. 2. Portable between XL and. XE. 3. How are disk swaps handled for games that have 2 disks? 4. I want to run SpartaDos, though MyDos would suffice. 5. Needs to be easy enough for a 6 year old since my son will use one too. Whats the best option for my usage needs? Thanks in advance!

Atari in movies and films
Ripdubski replied to Stormtrooper of Death's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
In the movie Sneakers, Dan Akroyd uses an Atari 830 acoustic coupler. 20 seconds in. Edit: guess i should have looked at the links above first. At least my memory was right. -
I recently acquired again the 520 ST I had in my youth, along with a SF354. I know the drive stinks, but its what I had and what I wanted to get again. I wont really be using the system other than to demonstrate it. That being said, it has TOS 1.4. I do not have any software for it period. I do have ST softwareo on my Mac. i plan on getting an UltraSatan or similar in the future but its not a priority. Question. How can i get software to the ST in the interim? I do have sn SX212 modem, but again no software. So Im thinking I have to get my hands on a terminal software disk or cartridge. Ideas?

How to remove yellowing from an old Atari case
Ripdubski replied to mimo's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Find a close color to the keyboard brown and use this to find a compatable color, then look for a paint to match. http://www.colorschemer.com/online.html -
Yes. It was Bi-Lo, a chain in the south east. I used to work for the holding company doing the enterprise monitoring for corporate and retail. I'm going to reach out to some friends and colleagues to see if any one knows. It may be difficult because the chain was acquired last year by Winn-Dixie and allt of the IT was moved. I did google around and didn't find anything right away. I'll post an update if I find out anything.

It wasn't the Bionics. It had a small 9" (?) TV in it. It was a sit down unit with a display in front and the cuff on the side. I knew it was an Atari driving it because the title text was Graphics 2 and had the rotating rainbow effect applied. I wish I remembered more about it, or better yet wish I had taken a picture of it. This was before camera phones.

I also saw a blood pressure machine in a grocery store that was clearly Atari 8 bit under the covers. This was back in about 2001. I dont remember anythng else about it.

-Why did less commercial titles for Atari 8Bit?
Ripdubski replied to Drummerboy's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I wasnt saying the ST killed the 8bit. What I was getting at was Atari itself causing dis-interest through its actions. I absolutely love the 8 bit, and was disappointed by the ST. yes it had more power but it didnt have the "fun" factor - for me. Yes I recall the letter writing campaigns but I thought those occured later, like 87 or so, after the ST had already been sitting on peoples desks a while. Many years after I had moved to the PC, in fact between 97 to 98, I reverted back to the ST because I was tired of the PC always having some piece of software refusing to work, back during the DLL hell days. I never went back to the PC, but instead moved to Mac around 99. I still love the 8 bit. Its the most fun computer i have ever used. It speaks loads to Atari that they managed to keep it alive as long as they did considering how fast technology changes. And I agree this thread is a very interesting read. -
Nice work!

-Why did less commercial titles for Atari 8Bit?
Ripdubski replied to Drummerboy's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Just to add my .08 ... if you go back and look at the Antic, Analog, STart, and STLog's between 84 to 86 it becomes very apparent. 8 bit's lost traction to the the 16 bits. Some of the 8 bit magazine issues during that timeframe had very little actual 8 bit coverage. A big shift in advertising from 8 to 16 bit occurs in this time, wether it be the publishers choice or what I think was just a changing market. You also see how early the ST line was announced before shipping. Who wants to buy when the next big thing is right around the corner. So why the traction loss? No huge improvements other than more memory. The list could get quite long. But really, why is a PC or Mac bought today not so appealing in a year vs the newest ones. I personally think had Atari delivered the 1400 and 1450 with a processor improvement and loads more memory, and as previously stated better disk, 1200 baud modem (300 was too slow by that point, or an option for it), and 80 columns the 8 bits would have survived longer. Yes, 80 columns without RF. At this point it would have been OK to require a composite monitor as the market for these machines had matured enpugh to support it. It was 6/86 when i jumped to the ST side after watching and feeling the 8 bit slide away. That ST machine didnt engage me as much as the 8 bit did, and it wasnt too long after that that I moved to the PC, yes bleck, an even more unengaging machine. But thats where technology was moving. I would love to see some enterprising individual purchase rights to build a proper 1400/1450 today. A niche machine for the retro computing Atari enthusiast. Any unicorn lover would probably buy one. Again just my .08. -
Is the IDE PLUS 2.0 still available (not at Lotharek)

What was YOUR very first computer?
Ripdubski replied to OldSchoolRetroGamer's topic in Classic Computing Discussion
Atari 800 (16k) with 410 cassette in 1980. Later upgraded to 48k. Still have it. Still worked about 10 years ago.
