Interesting replies to this topc & thanks to Anthony Webster on The Verve for the names of the following Atari artists: Cliff Spohn (Combat box designer, so the first), Rick Guidice had worked on space-colony concept art for NASA in the 1970s, George Opperman, the late graphic artist who created the enduring Atari logo, artist John Enright & Susan Jaekel who did the Adventure cover

The definitive list of ALL simultaneous multiplayer games?
armourae replied to godzillajoe's topic in Atari 2600
The greatest multiplayer games and superior to most of the 32bit so called improvements of Xbox etc. This is where Atari come into its own : the apotheosis, the quintessential console: Boxing, Indy 500, Warlords, Combat few things can beat these when you're beating opponents -
Being really renegade here- ET Yes I mean it! Most of the people at my covent school already the Atari in 1977....most of the families were loaded! I got mine foir Christmas when ET came out and like everyone else I found it disappointing But 30 years later ET is a challenging puzzle game. In addition to finding the telephone there is the predicatable collisions with all those damn wells that make it challenging and the FBI agent has the habit of appearing at the wrong moment to stop you finishing the game and there's that 'teleporting' where he appears out of nowhere to stop the spaceship arriving. A game that remains a bit of a challenge and a puzzlr game that makes a change from blasting everything

I'll be trawling ofr more of the Atari 800 artwork. Hopefully most of it is of the same high quality. These machines are overlooked due to the popularity of the 2600. Clearly the same artists were employed. Remember the rhyme- standard adn silver are the best Red cartridge cover art is the worst

Thanks for the list of artists. One of them also did a montage painting of Professor Rubik and his cube. Judging from the style adn layout I'd say it was the same one who did Codebreaker. Braingames is an excellent cover! As is Warlords. One of the review sites for Atari loves the Warlords game forthe trash talk it encourages. The cover of Casino is unusual: instead of a realist montage it's in a graphic design style. The paintings featuring people are more effective than the vehicle or action images, eg Combat, Air Sea Battle Now to go and find some more excellent art of these artists & Flag Capture: terrible game but the art work makes it interesting as it creates an immersive and exciting experience

A great achievement of Atari since 1977 which no other system has beaten is the quality of the artwork. I enjoy the Codebreaker game, and all the puzzle style cartridges had this outstanding artwork: realist paintings superimposed on eachother as a series of images. But who were the artists? Commercial art is notorious for not crediting skilled artists; meanwhile someone who can't handle a paintbrush is feted in a gallery and sells their work for a fortune- my father was a commercial and gallery artist, his commercial work helped the companies but not credited. Drew Suzan who did the Sabbath Bloody Sabbath album cover appears to have done the Raiders of the Lost Ark but the same artist who did Video Chess appears to have painted Night Driver and Haunted House. I'd be interested int the late 80s cartoon artists but only as curiosity. Its's the early years that are classic
