Pole Position II and Elevator Action were in some late Atari catalogs and also announced by Datasoft. I have Elevator Action as RX8070. I saw Sinistar mentioned in another catalog, don't remember where... There was a review of this unreleased version in Atari Explorer. I have it as RX8118 (MIDI Maze is RX8124). ++ RC ++ -

I can think of three: Pang, Dynakillers, Tekblast. Tekblast is wonderful and deserves a cartridge edition ++ RC ++ -
"Lost prototypes" finally to be released?
Randy California replied to davidcalgary29's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I think MIDI Maze has been "out there" for some time now. Also Commando, Xenophobe, Mat Mania Challenge, Mean 18 among others. It would be fun to find a Picnic Paranoia cartridge with a 1987 or 1988 copyright... So, after Epyx, Electronic Arts, Broderbund Software, it seems Atari bought the rights to Synapse Software and Datasoft games. Talk about being cheap... How about some more speculation on unreleased software? Maybe I'm being optimistic but I assume these titles exist (or have existed) in a more or less finished form: Access - 10th Frame Atari - Elevator Action - Jungle River Cruise - Pole Position II - Sinistar - TumbleWeeds - Warlords - educational titles Electronic Arts - Adventure Construction Set - Skyfox LucasFilm Games - Labyrinth Romox - many... ++ RC ++ -
Let's try the good old market by market approach to track down the causes of the demise... US A lot of people thought the Atari 8-bit computers reached their technical peak in 1984-5 with Ballblazer, Alternate Reality... Lack of support in the US after 1986 did the rest (see one of my previous posts). UK I'd say one of the biggest problems in the UK from the beginning was with distribution (can you confirm this JBJ?). Not only did Atari completely blew it there but the magazine effort was pointless (no Zzap! or Crash to boost sales or development)... Sure, there was some stuff from the budget houses, big titles from time to time (Trailblazer, Gauntlet, Arkanoid...), Zeppelin Games but that's about all... Forgot about Red Rat Software and English Software but half of their catalog was a bit shitty... Germany The A8 was very successful in Germany (and the Netherlands) but (correct me if I'm wrong emkay) I think there weren't big software companies to push the computer at the time. Apart from Ariola, I can't think of another big publisher in 1984-5... Big club (ABBUC...) and magazine involvement there. Eastern Europe The Atari 8-bit line sold like hot cakes in Eastern Europe, which led to the creation of a REAL demo scene (now that's one thing that helped the C64 a lot) and software companies (LK Avalon, Mirage Software, ASF...). Technically, the stuff was a step forward, even if half of the games lacked originality or were direct rip-offs or quick conversions (check Special Forces on the Atari and Operation Hanoi on the C64 to see what I mean...). A lot of these coders came from the demo scene, probably an explanation to the budget-like appearance of some of the games. All these factors leading to no progress or regression in the programming techniques. Comments? ++ RC ++

Snowball intro by T. Liebich probably... ++ RC ++

You have a point there... No "serious" Atari 8-bit game development took place in the US after 1986 and nothing was done to feed the thousands of North American users. I wish Antic or ANALOG had done something to import European software or attract small developers but most of what the US and Canada got was stuff written in BASIC or type-ins, hence no creativity or technical breakthroughs to be found... ++ RC ++

Don't you think the Atari 8-bit deserved better magazine support in the UK? Most of the Atari publications had a passive attitude and I was never really excited when reading the magazines. Monitor was good but too confidential, the rest was quite low-level most of the time... ++ RC ++
-
What I feel is that many people still regard 1982-3 games as the technical standard. Proof has been given that the Atari 8-bit can do better than that so why be so regressive? ++ RC ++
-
I mostly agree with emkay: this attitude has hurt and continues to hurt the Atari 8-bit. For one thing, always referring to the past is negative. I sometimes feel we're still stuck in the eighties... Why is it that so few people want technical PROGRESS? C64 users are really smarter: more thinking, more views, more complex games, nicer graphics... Look at what's been done! Watch those European demos! There are tools available to do more than 1982-like games. This is year 2003 and the resources are numerous! Listen to people like emkay, Heaven, JBJ, Fox, Raster...: they know their stuff! Open up! Classic games are OK but this is getting ridiculous. If people think a more complex program on the Atari necessarily has less playability, they're heading for the wrong direction. I'm not saying better graphics make for better gameplay but more ambition will benefit the entire community. Heck, if some of you don't want anything better, don't bother, just take your VCS! Sorry if I sound aggressive but I've been an Atari 8-bit nut for twenty years and it's always the same old song... ++ RC ++
