I just gave a live presentation of vintage computers from my collection to a class of college freshmen: an Apple ][ and a TI 99/4A, complete with a demonstration of loading programs from cassette tape. It's always interesting to see their astounded reactions to such "primitive" technology.

  I'm 35 also, and I got my first computer in 1982. It's been an amazing journey to see how they've grown, but also interesting to think of how they've stayed very much the same in certain ways, which is what I tried to impress upon the students.

  You subjected your students to the torture of loading from tape? Ugh. I think that's defined as 'cruel and unusual punishment' in most states. I did that with my C64 for three months and then got a 1541 for Christmas, thank God!
