It just occurred to me that there are many "echoes" of the Odyssey² in the classes I'm teaching this semester. My embedded systems class is based on the 8051 MCU family (the successor of the O²'s 8048), and one of the projects for my programming classes will be a reimplementation of "Crypto-Logic", one of the O²'s pack-in games.

  I always meant to read the 8048 data sheets. My life began with 6502 and then x86.

  It's an interesting little microcontroller. Among many other things, it was used as the onboard controller in IBM's original Model M keyboards; I think my Unicomp Model Ms still use the 8048, at least in the PS/2 versions.
