  1. Maybe I'm just out of touch, but I'm not getting the massive appeal of Minecraft. Whenever I see my nephews and their friends play it, all they do is make buildings and other shapes out of the blocks. If you take the "Video Graffiti" mode of 2600 Surround, make it 3D, change the background into a green field, and add different-colored blocks, you've pretty much got Minecraft, as far as I can tell.

      Not every game is for every person, and being able to see the appeal of a game isn't always clear unless you like the same things. For instance, I don't really get the massive appeal for FPS games, multiplayer or not.

      Don't get me wrong, I appreciate creative building games. I *still* love Lode Runner and Boulder Dash Construction Kit and the like. But at least with those, there's an element of challenge because they're puzzles and you get to play them when you're done.

       

      As it usually seems to be played, Minecraft barely qualifies as a game; it's more like a video toy, or as others said, virtual Legos. Fun for what it is, I guess, but not worth all the hype.
