Teaching a class on 8-bit microcontrollers (the 8051 family) makes me realize afresh how far removed from the inner workings of computers today's college students are, even those majoring in computer science. Getting them to think about bits and bytes and registers and clock ticks is like teaching them a second language.

It's actually an embedded system security class, and microcontrollers are one of the platforms we're using to explore lightweight IoT cryptography. But to be able to program them, I have to spend the first few weeks introducing the students to the architecture, and programming firmware in C is alien territory to them.
