  1. I have the opportunity to pick up a fairly decent Soul Calibur III arcade cabinet from a local arcade for about $500. From what I read, it should be fairly easy to convert to a MAME cabinet, but I need to do some more research before I decide.

Yeah Soul Caliber is a pretty cool game. I'd leave it as is for the game room (or not buy it at all), and then buy a cheaper/crappier game to turn into a MAME cabinet.

Thanks to everyone for the input! I'm not really into fighting games, so I probably wouldn't get much play out of it as-is. I'm thinking of picking it up simply because it's available locally and has a CRT monitor, which I'd really want in a MAME cabinet. I'm afraid that buying a generic cabinet would be too difficult and expensive to ship (especially with a CRT), and I don't really have the means at the moment to build my own cabinet from scratch.

@Keatah: Research into the cabinet. I'm already very comfortable with MAME, but I've only used it on standard PCs. The original hardware in this cabinet seems to be based on a modified Playstation 2, but with a JAMMA adapter, a PC conversion should be a fairly straightforward process, at least according to similar conversion projects I've read about.
