My Internet service at the house is currently with AT&T DSL. We had a lightning strike on Wednesday that damaged the modem. Ever since, I've been trying to get a tech to come out and replace it, and they've now botched two appointment attempts. I'm seriously thinking of switching to HughesNet satellite service (which I happily used for years before we "upgraded" to DSL).

  Oh, God, no. Under *no* circumstances should you go to HughesNet. Their billing is a mess, and actually getting someone to come out and realign the dish (say, after a storm) is a nightmare. Ditto equipment replacement. My parents went through hell with them and as soon as cable was available where they are they signed up and never looked back.
  
  Seriously, avoid HughesNet at all costs.
