The original "Star Wars" opened in US theaters 42 years ago today, on May 25, 1977. Also, the original "Alien" was released (on a limited basis) on the same date 40 years ago today: May 25, 1979.
I was not quite 4 when Star Wars came out. So I missed that. Then my grandfather took me to see Empire when I was about 7 and I fell asleep. By the time ROTJ rolled around, though, every kid in my neighborhood had a plastic lightsaber. Good freakin' times.
Besides the movie itself, the things I remember most about ROTJ are: the narrated "Story of Return of the Jedi" record (which I still think is great), the Burger King commemorative glasses, and the "Making of a Saga" TV special, which I must have seen a hundred times as a kid.
