      @cyber... the discs in that box set of yours are all the original theatrical cuts.

      ^ Yes, if it's TMP on Blu-ray, it's (unfortunately) the theatrical version. I'm glad to have that, too, but it's clearly in an unfinished state. The changes with the Director's Edition addressed real issues with the movie; they weren't just stupid tinkering, like making poor Greedo say "Maclunkey!" for no reason.

      And 40 years later, I still remember how disappointing it was. I'd been excited about it for months, cutting out movie ads from the newspaper and taping them on my wall. But it was just painfully boring when we went to see it for my birthday. The subsequent "Extended" cuts on home video didn't help.

       

      The 2001 Director's Edition (DVD only) is a vast improvement over the theatrical cut. It's never been released on Blu-Ray though, since the new effects footage they created was all done prior to HD. I met David Fein (the Producer) around that time and got to talk with him about it. It looks like this summer Paramount was considering a 4K version of the Director's Cut, but I haven't seen anything more recent about it.
