^ Well, remember, this was recorded in 1988.  At that time, Hubble hadn't yet been launched, and it was unclear whether there was enough matter in the universe to cause a "big crunch."  Since then, it's been observed that remote galaxies are accelerating, so the consensus (last I heard) is that the universe will continue expanding forever.

It's also possible that it expands and contracts, kind of like a gigantic version of breathing in and out. Whoever is alive if that ever happens isn't going to have a nice day.
