The Space Shuttle Challenger exploded 35 years ago today. I was one of the kids watching it live on TV. I was nine years old.

I remember for every single shuttle launch, the teacher would stop class and we would watch them live. On that day though for some reason we didn't (shuttle launches becoming too common?) so we all had to go outside for recess. I was really upset about it at the time.
Once we came inside the TV was on but the reporters said something happend to the Challanger and it took them a while before they shown the actual explosion...which would have been more terrible to see it happening live.
After that, we never seen anymore shuttle launches in school again. It truely was the end of an era.

I was 17 years old and a senior in HS. School was canceled for a predicted ice storm that never occurred so our drama teacher called us in for an unscheduled rehearsal for an upcoming show. I was in the theater when another kid came in and gave us the news. None of us believed him because he had a rep as a BS'er and tall-tale guy but we quickly found out he wasn't lying this time.
