It just occurred to me that there are many "echoes" of the Odyssey² in the classes I'm teaching this semester. My embedded systems class is based on the 8051 MCU family (the successor of the O²'s 8048), and one of the projects for my programming classes will be a reimplementation of "Crypto-Logic", one of the O²'s pack-in games.

Sometimes I think that classic computers will "die" with those of us who grew up with them, but I also think they'll enjoy a "renaissance" when we all retire and FINALLY have enough free time to tinker with them.

Yay! Another year, another "end times" prediction, this one for 2015! http://articles.philly.com/2013-05-29/news/39582351_1_harold-camping-ebible-fellowship-judgment-day

Attention, Internet: There is NO SUCH WORD as "origanil". It's spelled O-R-I-G-I-N-A-L! If you can't remember that, at least learn to use a spell checker!

I finally had the chance to fire up my new Weller WESD51 soldering station this evening. Such a pleasure to use! A real step up from my old Radio Shack pencil.

My Thanksgiving project this year (besides eating dinner): restoring a 7800! I had to replace the TIA, the 6532, and all the console switches, but it's working now! The last step is installing an A/V mod ...

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! If you're having trouble with your turkey, look no further than The Onion for advice (expand for link) ...

Does anyone else remember "Braingames", the 1983 HBO series of animated shorts for kids? I've been watching them again this evening for the first time in 20+ years, and I'm so glad I found them. Brings back some good memories ... https://archive.org/search.php?query=subject:"Braingames"

"Many of us already feel as if we're handcuffed to our computers. With its new smart watch, unveiled today in California, Apple is hoping to turn that figure of speech into a literal truth." - Nicholas Carr

I'd love to see a Fairchild Channel F Flashback, complete with authentic controllers.

I'm all for raising awareness, and in the case of the Ice Bucket Challenge, it seems to be working. I've never been more aware of buckets of icy water.
-
I hadn't even heard of it until about three days ago, but I'm already tired of the Ice Bucket Challenge.

The 2015 edition of Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide will apparently be the last. I'm very saddened by this; I still see the benefits of printed books, and I've always liked the Movie Guide in particular: http://deadline.com/2014/08/r-i-p-leonard-maltins-movie-guide-internet-kills-iconic-print-paperback-after-45-years-821849/

I just finished one of my more annoying summer projects: a complete teardown and rebuild of my main workstation. I'll probably be busy re-tweaking it for weeks, but it's good to finally get the rebuild over with (my poor machine was long overdue for it). Now, on to my network server!

Why will OpenOffice never replace Microsoft Office? Because other applications are so intertwined with the Office APIs that they just assume that you have Office installed, even when it shouldn't be necessary. Case in point: to add a threaded hole to a plate in Autodesk Inventor, you MUST have Excel installed. Even though creating a threaded hole has NOTHING whatsoever to do with spreadsheets.
-
Okay, so I installed MS Office, and when I go to create a threaded hole, Inventor is now able to populate its drop-down lists of thread sizes and the corresponding US and metric dimensions.
So apparently, Autodesk couldn't even write their own lousy unit conversion calculator for Inventor (which costs $10K per seat!); they just invoke Excel to do the math instead, and if you don't have an extra Excel license handy, screw you!
(Excuse the pun.)

@atarian63: Google Docs is just as bad. If you have a Google account and are immersed in their ecosystem, you won't notice; but send a link to someone who doesn't, and all of a sudden, they have to jump through all manners of hoops and devious "sign-up" pages just to view a stupid memo! Oh, and don't get me started if you enabled Ghostery or disabled JavaScript--you won't even know why things don't look or work as expected.

I just got an amber monochrome monitor (a 12" Amdek 310A) in like-new condition, complete with glare filter, and I managed to find a Hercules compatible graphics card as well! It's still my favorite type of PC display. Time to build a 386 PC and load it up with DOS games!
-
For me, the classic PC of the early era was/is the 486. Software bloat wasn't a problem yet - but was getting there.
I also agree that one-time setups were a plus. Today you're always having to dick around with something or other.
Too bad this wasn't made a thread.. Because PC's of that era are going to become classics real soon if not already.

I'm thinking of designing some simple robots, interfaced through the Atari 800 joystick ports, that can be controlled from Atari LOGO. I think it would be a fun way to teach my nephew about programming and electronics.

"The Second Day of July 1776 will be the most memorable Epoch in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding Generations as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shows, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more."

"I'm not talking about just a new tablet ... but, like, a tablet. A gamified tablet. It's not what we are going to do, but think about something like that! Like, a new type of tablet is something we 'could do.' A tablet, branded, where you don't have just an 'ordinary tablet.'"
