I just received a batch of ENTER magazines from 1984-1985. My family had a subscription in those years, and it's great to flip through them again. It was the best possible time to be a kid who liked computers.
-
Great. Now I've got the song "Idiot Control Now" stuck in my head! (The MSTies here will understand.)
-
I visited a self-storage unit I'm renting and found that someone had apparently cut the lock. Thankfully, nothing inside was missing; I've got a large part of my collection in there! I replaced the lock and will tell the owners tomorrow. Very strange ...
-
These storage places are shit. They have minimal or no real security. When ours was busted into we closed the account. By some strange coincidence I had moved the bulk of valuable material just weeks before. And we had the locker rented for quite some time! What luck. What was still there was of no interest to whomever broke in.
We wrote the company complaining about security, and when they didn't respond favorably we canceled our account.

I'm watching TRON tonight ... on LaserDisc! My first LD movie! I'm glad to know my player works ...

This week's 25th Anniversary MST3K episode is "K12: Fugitive Alien"

The most important question about Microsoft's new CEO: can he scream like a maniac and sweat bucketfuls through his armpits while jumping around on stage to a Gloria Estefan song?

I just found a Computer Shopper catalog from November 1991, which features: "20 Powerful 486SXs! 9,600-bps Modems for Under $600! Hot Optical Drives!"
-

-
@SoulBlazer: Shocking indeed. About a year before that catalog was printed, I was 13 years old and saving up for my first PC, a 12MHz 286 that I built from a mix of new and used parts for about $350. It had a 20MB hard drive, a 14" VGA monitor (my first color monitor that wasn't a TV!), and one whole megabyte of RAM.
That same amount of money would buy a whole lot more capacity and computing power today.

Well, they just closed school here because of snow. I'm waiting for about an hour before I head home, though, because the roads are still clogged with inexperienced Southern drivers who don't know how to handle winter weather.

Well, I brought my first Android tablet "back from the dead" today. My nephew's XO Tablet became unresponsive (wouldn't power on or charge), so I pried it open to check it out. The battery seemed fine, so I clipped the battery leads, let it sit for an hour, soldered them back on, and now it's as good as new!

The XO is an interesting little tablet inside, by the way; I was struck by how small the mainboard is. Here's the processor it uses:
-
@Jess Ragan: I couldn't make an informed guess, except for the obvious one that the display is defective. Condensation on the back side of the screen, perhaps?
Unfortunately, these tablets are definitely not user serviceable electronics. You're supposed to buy new ones, not fix the old ones when they develop problems. Seems pretty wasteful to me.

This week's MST3K episode is "K09: Phase IV".

Great. I just found a scorpion (of the "southern unstriped" variety) wandering around in my room. I guess I was done with sleeping peacefully tonight anyway.

Microsoft's Windows Update web site (used by Windows 2000 and XP) seems to be deteriorating more and more every day. Grab the updates you need while you still can.

Quick question: anyone know of a source for plastic Atari-style joystick connectors? http://atariage.com/forums/topic/220434-sources-for-bulk-plastic-db-9m-joystick-connectors/

Happy birthday, Albert!
-
No 25th-anniversary MST3K today, obviously, so I'm watching a classic: "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians". Have a Patrick Swayze Christmas, everybody!

If you like Winamp, you'd better grab it while you can ... the site will be unavailable after tomorrow: http://www.winamp.com/media-player/en

This week's MST3K episode is "K05: Gamera" (Original Air Date: 12/11/1988)!

Yes! Joel really took one for the team on that episode, watching the whole movie by himself. He still works in some good lines and has fun playing with the screen, so it only makes you appreciate his improv talents even more. But the theater segments definitely suffer from the absence of Trace and Josh.

Starting today, I'm going to watch each of the original (KTMA) episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000, 25 years to the day after their original air dates (about one episode a week over the next ~20 weeks). This week's episode is "K04: Gamera vs. Barugon", which originally aired on 12/4/1988.

Just finished the experiment!
It's interesting to see all the elements in place, albeit in a less-developed form, so early in the series. The robots' voices still need work at this point, especially Servo's "Kermit the Frog" voice, and they're still finding their riffing rhythm in the theater segments. But, even this early, one can see flashes of brilliance.
