  1. I just got some 5200 games from Venezuela. Not only did someone (presumably an inspector) completely trash the boxes while slashing them open, but they even opened one of the cartridges! (The screw is missing, the back is cracked, and the bottom and side are marred with pry marks.)

I thought that turned out to be a hoax?

Oh.  Well, if it did, sorry!  Didn't know that.  They had cop video and everything!

Update: The seller responded and sent a partial refund.  I wouldn't take the full amount back, because what happened was at least partially out of his control.

  2. @napabar: Your subsequent responses (now hidden) have been off-putting and rude. You asked a question and received a perfectly reasonable answer, so why not leave it at that? Any more attitude and the thread gets locked.
  3. As desperate as Atari has been to scrounge up something to show to placate their backers, I'm amazed that they haven't yet posted a John Carlsen style kitchen table video going on and on about the power supply. "Bulk power goes in, video and audio comes out! Simple as that!"
  4. Fair enough. Tommy's response didn't strike me as unduly lengthy, given the points that Flojo raised. But, I can see your point, too.
  5. If Tommy was unwilling to "accept a little bit of friendly doubt and criticism," I doubt he would be here interacting with the community to this extent. I don't think his previous post indicated an "unwillingness" to accept criticism; he acknowledged the criticisms and offered counter-arguments. And I do consider the Amico-related posts to be germane to this thread, because they dramatize the contrast between Intellivision Entertainment's approach and "Atari"'s approach to their respective projects; the contrast is informative and enlightening for those who are following either project.
  6. There's nothing more frustrating than students who blatantly CHEAT, especially after the instructor (me) goes out of his way to be available to answer questions, in and out of class, even answering e-mails late at night.

"Look, I paid for college, so why should I even study? I paid you, now you owe me. If I go anywhere else (restaurant, grocery store, car dealership, etc.), I get something in return for my money. McDonald's doesn't make me take a quiz and refuse to give me a milkshake if I fail."

^ That's pretty much the attitude.  I hear it all the time, especially at the end of the semester: after getting an (already generous) grade of, say, 77% on an assignment, the student will write me back and say "You know, that's pretty close to a 'B.' If I get a 'C,' it might hurt my scholarship, so I'd really like to get a 'B' for this, please."

^ (Actually, that's a slight exaggeration.  They usually don't say "please.")

  7. For what it's worth, I think this is why @Tommy Tallarico and Intellivision Entertainment were wise to refrain from releasing the technical specifications of the Amico hardware up front. If they had done so, they would only have invited unfavorable (and irrelevant) comparisons to mainstream consoles and computers, and then the whole discussion around it would have deteriorated into a debate over the theoretical capabilities of the hardware and other diversions. By keeping the Amico specs under wraps—at least for now—they kept the focus where it should be and needs to be, which is on the games. They've received very good notices for the games they've announced and shown so far, and they're still ten months away from their projected release date. "Atari"—or, rather, the clown car of incompetents who are currently operating under that exalted name, adding insult to injury for those of us who still love it and care about it—went and did the exact opposite. Not only did they announce their hardware specs, but they announced them too early and had to subsequently change them, further delaying the delivery and adding even more uncertainty to a project that had already strained the limits of credibility. They have also failed to say or show anything substantive and verifiable about the games; to this day, we have not yet seen indisputable footage of the final hardware running a single game, or even plugged into a TV and turned on. For a console that is supposed to be shipping in "weeks, not months," that is unacceptable.
  8. You might be referring to Bruce Abbott's Micro Expander (see here). Bruce built a prototype a few years ago (and made some good progress on it, too!), and someone on eBay was selling a PCB set based on Bruce's design. However, it wasn't sold as a completed product; these were just the blank boards that you would assemble yourself with your own components.
  9. Agreed. You have already been asked, tripletopper, to refrain from starting any additional threads about game controllers; it seems as if you already have at least one in almost every subforum on AtariAge. I have retitled this thread and merged the three posts from your new thread into it, along with the posts from yet another new thread on the Odyssey² and Arcadia. Again, no new game controller threads. If you continue to ignore this warning, you will be placed back on moderator preview.
  10. Some later 2600 Jr. consoles (with Rev. 4 motherboards, I believe) shipped with a single chip inside, the C101688, which was a 6507 and TIA/RIOT combined into a single 64-pin package. The ones I've seen have 1987 date codes stamped on them, so this must have been a change made very late in the life of the 2600. Perhaps that's why so few of these so-called "Unicorn" consoles have turned up in the wild. I finally managed to find one "accidentally" when looking for a replacement Jr. motherboard to upgrade to composite; I ultimately found another board and left my Unicorn unmodified.
  11. This is pretty neat!  A transcription of the original Boulder Dash theme, playable in a browser:

That buzzy echoey NES music that is used in just about every NES game gets on my nerves after a while. I'd rather listen to this, which is similar to what is on the musescore.com page:

It's not nearly that echoey on the real game it's just that uploader applied too much reverb to it.

  12. Thank you! I'll probably be getting in touch with you once I re-check my inventory, particularly about the cassettes.
  13. Absolutely! Just send me a PM to remind me, and I'll contact you when I'm ready.
  14. After I scan and archive the materials, I'll make the games available for sale again here on AtariAge, along with the Mini Expander and controllers. Should be some time early next year.
  15. Thank you! I just scooped it up. Some of those materials will be useful for archiving for my (still upcoming) Aquarius website!

I kid, I kid, though I fell asleep to that in the theater about age 11...Lately, my friend showed me a few scenes and without having to watch the whole thing, it sure seemed a lot better than I remember it.   I thought 2001 was Awesome after seeing some scenes with him too, and then seeing it again much later in life.

  17. At the risk of dipping into the Coleco Chameleon well yet again, there's just one more video from @StopDrop&Retro that I'd like to re-post. It considers the backers of the Retro VGS, but many of the exact same statements could be made today of the supporters of "that Ataribox?", so I think it's worth a second look (or a first look, for those who weren't around at the time).
  18. ... because that's exactly what it is (or was). That's just one of the things that makes this video such a transcendent work of inadvertent genius.
  19. With all this talk of the Coleco Chameleon, I need to post this again, just because seeing it never fails to make me happy.
  20. Let's not forget, though, that it wasn't for lack of trying. One of the main reasons his crowdfunding campaigns failed to gain traction was because we "Hater Brigaders" here on AtariAge (among many others) spread the word and warned the larger community, at a time when mainstream "game journalists" were doing little more than uncritically regurgitating Mike's press releases. That probably prevented a debacle on the scale of "that Ataribox?" from happening back in 2016. His Jaguar shells were nice, though; I bought them too, back in the days when he seemed like a credible entrepreneur, because I figured that the money raised would help to directly support his ventures. I didn't realize at the time how convoluted the "Mikeonomics of Retro Land" really were. Speaking of plastic shells ... man, those new VCS shells look like some nasty, cheap, flimsy plastic. They could have at least gone with a textured surface like the originals.
  21. Mentioning someone in a forum post (by adding an "@" to their username) hardly constitutes "stalking" under any sane definition of the word. If receiving a notification when someone mentions you in a topic troubles you that much, simply disable the notifications.
