in my 600xl the card edge connector positioning had stressed the black mainboard socket to the point where some of the pins had snapped. i only found this out when i desoldered it as in certain positions it still worked. despite repeated attempts i could not find a permanent sweet spot so i got the iron out.. to cure it i ditched the card with the resistors on altogether and soldered in a dupont pin header to the mainboard side and a ribbon cable from the keyboard. now its 100% reliable!

a valuable piece of kit - highly recommended for repair diagnosis but with an added bonus RAM expansion! -
i think the best years are ahead of us - nowadays we are hardcore fans rather than ordinary consumers these days there is much more custom hardware and software and more on the way plus, i couldnt afford any hardware and only little software as a kid back in the day! hehe

you could try plastic welding? but you'd need to use the same type of plastic too ensure good adhesion ive used the dropcheck 3D printed fascia on a drive i got without one - it fits well enough but it is not entirely 100% accurate around the switch and LED

to get the roms onto it use SIO2SD (device that connects from atari serial port to box with sdcard slot) or SIO2PC (device connects from atari serial port to PC)

many thanks for the info, it was the thought of needing the programmer that put me off

So is the USB programmer device only optional, not necessary? I have a cart (SIC or maybe xegs ramcart) that you use software on your PC to create a list of games and then it compiles it into an .atr file. You then reboot with the cart in the slot, boot this new .atr file and it flashes the 'creation' to the cart Is the maxflash a similar system?

Atari 1050 in kinda rough shape

Looks reasonably clean in there Happy and Mini-Speedy do not require any soldering - they come with extra features besides the double density but can have compatibility issues with original disks. Im told the US Doubler has no compatibility issues. It requires a little soldering but it is also the least costly to do. For a USD upgrade you will have to replace the ROM with a custom 2732 EPROM, remove JP1 and JP3 and solder them into JP2 and JP4 and add a second 6810 chip on top of the existing one - with a couple of tweaks (there are numerous guides on here showing which pins) My USD is shown below -

I can recommend using a 9v AC SNES / NES power supply for the 1050 drive although some people have reported issues Also, a guy on UK ebay sells new power switches for cheap but you have to bend the 3x pins from vertical to horizontal formation (they are designed for the computers but are bend-able for drive use) If you can, post some pics of it's innards so we can get to the nitty-gritty -

Hi, Thanks for taking the time to do this research. I burned the "UsDoubler_ok.bin" to both my Tandon USD drives and they work great! The seek times are much better than the ROM I used previously All the best Nick

it might be worth looking into the socket in case some debris fell in or a pin is adrift?
