Yeah, my sixteen year old son is sitting here laughing at me so hard he's turning purple. I should make him learn this stuff with me.

Oops sorry.. excuse my retardedness. That's why I'm a noob. Major noob.

I'm guessing that swapping out the powerpack is not an advanced-level undertaking? If anyone has any pointers, I'd be grateful. I'll start looking for threads on it. thanks!

Very good point. And thanks for the correction on iron vs. gun... I am clueless but I love learning, so I probably will get another console AND the soldering iron, etc. Why resist when I know I'm going to fall headlong into addiction with this thing?

I bet you're right... I was just starting to think the same thing. I was in the mindset of "what repair shops have I seen," when really I'm sure I can find someone by asking a few people. I am a bit of a hermit lately, lol.

I hadn't thought of trying to buy a console with no powerpack. Is it easy to swap them out? I live in the BOONIES, so I don't know if there's much hope for finding local help, but I will definitely check around... I wonder if it WOULD just be easier and just as cheap or cheaper to buy a powerpack-less console. By the way, I love this forum... by far the friendliest, most coherent and useful forum I've been to for anything. Thanks for being awesome.

I wish I was comfortable with that... I've never even touched a soldering gun. I really appreciate your advice, though. If I can't find anyone willing to fix it for me I will definitely go buy a soldering gun and try what you did.

Hi everyone --- I used my birthday money this year to buy a 2600 Vader with a few games. No joystick came with it, so I purchased an original joystick from a different seller on ebay, who assured me the joystick had been tested and was in good working order. When I had received everything, I giddily (with flashbacks of childhood) hooked everything up and the first game I played was Space Invaders. It wasn't until I tried another game that required "up" and "down" motions that I realized my "up" didn't work on my joystick.... so I purchased another joystick. This time I bought a brand new joystick that is a replica made to work on the 2600 and some other systems. It looks almost identical to the original. It never occurred to me that this could be a problem on the console... until I tried the second joystick and got the exact same result. Everything on it worked fine except I can't go "up". I have never taken a system apart -- I am not mechanical at all and probably don't have the tools for it. I am willing to try small things that won't likely end in disaster if anyone has any suggestions. Also, if anyone repairs systems for a reasonable fee I would be more than happy to talk to you! I really want this baby to work! LL
