simply avoid the condition where the video chip issues a badline... Off course, I understand, just like generating badline every scanline it should be possible to turn them completely off (I'm not sure about that), but: then the colorcells are not refreshed every charmode row. That is: every row has the same coloring scheme. Off course, like you said about that c64 demo, you can accept that, just to make some funky vertical colorbars, but now we're not talking about gfx enhancement anymore. ----- mux If you turn them off by making sure the 3-bit scroll register never matches the raster line numbers lowest 3 bits the hardware will finish up drawing the current cells and then do nothing until it reaches another match. this is how FLD (Flexible Line Distance) effects work.

Whilst we're discussing RMT. I've been playing with this tune (A By-ear conversion of a tune from the c64 by prosonix). The tune really does need the high notes - it's not up to much without them - but the pokey sounds like (for want of a better explaination) it's screaming it's balls off. I've heard other tunes hit notes in around the same range and do a damn good job of it. can someone shed any light on this? Attached is what I have so far prosonix.zip

so far as instruments go I pretty much use stock instruments from the RMT instruments directory. I just make a few changes like changing the volume envelope from being 'full volume from the start' to '1 frame of near silence and then full volume from then onwards' to make the bass notes more defined. Arpeggios are the only other thing (037/047 for major/minor chords, 07c for something approximating 'power chords', 0c for a 'chime' type sound).... but it's pretty much what comes with RMT for me. It was a quality game though, although I had the Archimedes version...

fish intro - beware oldschool meets g2f...
sack-c0s replied to Heaven/TQA's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Yeah - i noticed that on the emulator too. I'm using waveform mixing to get the 16-bit bassline and drums onto one channel (sounds better than using standard 8-bit bass and having a channel for drums). it sounds fine in the editor and the .sap file, but it sounds a lot more obvious on the emulator (and presumably the real thing too) to the point of making the bass notes sound late. it also sounds tuned down for some reason. I'll have a play with the tune and the RMT playback code to see what it is, but I think this is my bad -
What, like this quick one I tossed off (from the old epic shooter Tyrian)? tyrian.zip

That is really bloody nice I must say. nice use of stereo there! makes me jealous - one of hubbards best tunes (in my opinion anyhow) and it's not even on the C64

So what you're basically saying is that what you create is music if we like it or not, but what everyone else creates only constitutes music if you like it? That's a lot of sway for one person, don't you think? no. what you're showcasing is your particular 'style' and at the end of that day that's all it is - not right, not wrong, just your own personal style. you can't keep claiming to be open-minded about music, then constantly keep ramming your own particular preference down everyones throat claiming everyone else is wrong.
-
You can use any of the tunes which are out there in circulation that I've done really so long as you find one you like If there's a .sap file of mine and there's no matching .rmt file then drop us a line and I'll dig it out.

Yeah - to be honest it's a much better when you hear it live, the recorded version is pretty good but it just seems to be missing something... Can't quite figure out what though. Actually for something a bit quicker maybe 'Rookie' would've worked better. I'll give that a try sometime. I'll have an experiement with it - the bit that was giving me the trouble was the pre-chorus part and the chorus itself. The verse worked out well and the ending part sounded okay. I haven't actually tried to build the intro yet. But it could be good I reckon if done carefully.

One soundtrack, that's all... then it's integration time. =-) ...and I just emailed the thing 10 mins ago, so that's one thing done.

Haven't posted one of these for a whileand I'm bored, so here you go Disco Zax - conversion from the c64 (original by Drax/vibrants). Also there's a 4-pattern loop of a cover of a boysetsfire song I've been toying with. I think these patterns (the verse part if you know the original) are fine, but every attempt I make on the rest of the song sound crap, so I throw it open to be done with as you wish... discozax.zip

Q/ what does this thread and half the children around where I live have in common? A/ It was created accidentally by a quick slip whilst drunk. Any moderators want to nuke it? I can't see how you get rid of the start of a threaq...

Games Revival -> Best Time ever for the A8 ?
sack-c0s replied to andy_bernstein's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
It's nearly there, i have a C64 project that needs to be done as close to Chrimble as possible but after that all i have to do is build the completion screen and a quick fade up/down for the Cosine logo (based on the C16 one i'm using in my avatar right now). Oh, and a certain person needs to get on with converting the other two tunes he hasn't done yet [looks meaningfully at Sack =-] suprisingly enough - I'm actually doing it now -
not being lucky enough to own a nuon or track down a jag CD yet I'm having to hold out for the next-gen VLM in unity. christ on a bike that thing looks nice...
-
Because conversions are normally botched... The C64's strength is it's original software, the stuff that's written to use the hardware. Agreed - just fire up Mayhem in Monsterland and have a look at that
-
I'vt tried playing it without sound and I just can't get into the swing of it. For me the music is pretty important for a zone-out sesh we now return you to the topic in question....
-
actually when i straightened up I did improve it a little, but it's not exactly great is it? it was the theme for 'The Magic Roundabout' - which is probably one of the best bits of TV ever if you happen to be in the state I was in when I did it. methinks I'm going to stick to posting .sap files when I'm less screwed up though
-
for me it has to be river raid on the 2600... T2K on the jag takes entire hours from my life though without me even noticing they're gone.
-
This has pretty much no relevance to anything (apart from the fact it was done in RMT) - but the fact of the matter I am in a state that can only be described as 'stoned as f**k' and it seemed funny to do at the time stoned.zip
-
That's a shame - I've only had one C64 break (heavy-handed brother ripped the modulator off the board) and that's with me using a paperclip as a makeshif reset button and plugging joysticks in whilst it's on. the 1541s tend to blow their 6522s though and the commodore 16s all die of TED failiure (damn I miss mine...)

XBOX using the 5200 Marketing Strategy?
sack-c0s replied to A2600's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Out of the 'big 3' the only one I currently own is the cube (black). I like the nintendo games - there I said it. The X-box admittedly was the one I hated initially - riding on one game and some crappy initial releases but I reckon they've turned it around with some pretty decent games after a shaky first year. There's nothing on the PS2 that I want and couldn't get on the other two, so it doesn't interest me really. besides - i find the pads too small and fiddly. I know Nintendo have a penchant for releasing consoles modelled after lunchboxes - but personally i'll be concentrating on the TV screen So far as the 5200/xbox comparisons go both are big and black, modified home computers with 4 control ports, one was dubbed system-X and the other the X-box. so there's some similarity there I suppose... -
Yeah, but doesn't HardPOKEY sound like a badly translated porn film...? =-) now that you mention it.. hardSID sounds like the male star
-
Ofcourse it is nice. But take note that the Cyber4dot Tune is a very cool one. With cool drums and really different sounding voices. With a better POKEY Emulation it would be much more fun to do some finetune. But this time it is a torture to do so: 0 Load RMT 10 load the song 20 make a small change in the song 30 save the Song 40 export to XEX 50 exit RMT 60 listen the whole song in A800win or o.HW until the change is played 70 goto 0 hardSID was a great way of getting around these problems - maybe a pokey equivalent would go down well?
