I've learned to play it now... and it's still a bit crap but we can always forgive one faux pas given that he did write Yars' revenge and star raiders

What kind of problem are you having? Falling into pits? We've explained that many a time #1. If you fall into a pit, if you're fast enough you can hover before hitting the ground.. that usually saves some time #2. When getting out of the pit, once you're out of the pit (i.e. the overhead view) STOP PUSHING UP. If you continue to push up you'll fall back in. Push directly down or left or right instead. It's a snap to get out of any pit once you know that. That's about it as far as I know.. Oh and if you want it easy.. play Game variation 3. that's great - the game is a piece of piss once you know those simple things

so... seeing as we have HSW here... What is the key to ET then? Everybody says 'once you get the hang of it you'll be just fine' but nobody seems to want to explain Yars revenge is a fantastic game though - that and warlords have to be my favourite atari games. thanks man
  4. anddd.... seeing as I'm now drunk and it's customary to attach music to this thread wiz.rmt - the title music to win 'n' Liz - converted and hardly modified (just retuned slightly, but still...umm.. wrong in places). Not entirely sure who by originally. The .mod say 'Rik ede' but I'm told by a reliable (albeit drunken ) source that Matt Furniss did it. pissings.rmt - from a cover .mod I did - relies too much on the original instruments and just sounds a bit crappy really. better than the wimpy c64 version i made using the goat tracker import and crappy homemade instruments though alloyrun.rmt - This one was done by hand. not too bad I thought, just not gotten around to finishing it random_rmt_files.zip
  5. I think 'beams of light' is one of those tunes that needs a *lot* of modification because of the amount of slides in it. It reminds me of my sega mastersystem for some reason (not that it's a bad thing) Where was this tune from originally anyhow - I remember it from being a loader on an Archinedes demo (Riscdream by Armaxess I think)?
  6. I know you don't want to give away anything about the game, but having some idea about what it is would probably help people suggest a suitable platform for it... And so far as graphics/sound/etc. - there's talented people all over these boards who I'm sure owuld be willing to help in some small way
  7. That .mod import is damn good - I've played with the .mod import on GoatTracker (A similar kind of tool for the C64) but this one blows it away. I still think it works better if you rebuild a song from scratch (I just tried doing a mod import on freedom.mod and I can't get it to sound anywhere as good as the custom version I did) - just using the .mod as a general guide and built everything according to what works well on the target machine. But I'm sure there's people who will prefer to do it this way and it's great that there's the option. Anyhoo - here's a quick & dirty .mod conversion I did to see what you can get out of it in around 5 minutes. amegas.zip

I actually *like* the 2600 pacman (If you treat it as a different game from the arcade PacMan itself it's still fun to play) - but ET bugs the bejeesus out of me! it's just one ending up in the pit after another. really pisses me off something chronic. maybe if someone would clue me in as to what I'm supposed to be doing (Seeing as I only have a loose cart and no skill ) I might enjoy it that bit more.
  9. Well I was going to plug those, seeing as TMR never seems to make it beyond the 8-bit forums - but you've saved me a job there
  10. Yeah - It really is the perfect song for that. Especially if you know the smashing pumpkins original ('and I fail/but when I can I will') - has that kind of 'Things aren't going to plan right now - but go back and have another try' vibe to it - which is what game over is, right? I've got a couple of things I'm playing with on the Atari right now (Yes TMR - I will finish those Reaxion tunes sometime this millenium ) which will find their way out into the world in due course. I've also been looking through rasters tunes and instruments for ideas on how to make things sound better too. I'm glad folks like them though
  11. Ahhh thank ye gods! I've been wanting that mono->stereo option since... well... last thursday actually Nice work raster!
  12. But combat is still a common - even in PAL, right?
  13. I mostly end up playing T2K (where the 5 minute game ends up with me losing an hour of my life) or brutal sports football
  14. I use a flashcart for the GBC, a 'Coders cable' for the Dreamcast and an x1541 transfer cable to write cross-compiled code to the c64 diskdrive for testing on the real machine
  15. if we're talking about nice, easy first assembly languages to learn then I would recommend ARM it teaches you a few things that don't really translate to most other CPUs (e.g conditional execution of all instructions) but it's a nice, clean simple language and it gives you the GBA/GP32 as possible targets if you're intrested in console dev. Failing that, if you want to stay 100% Atari there's 6502.
  16. http://www.otakunozoku.com those GBA/GBC cribsheets are an absolute bloody godsend! i can't recommend them enough
  17. I got paid to spend a week in a room full of retro games playing games with 16 year old schoolkids 'This is f***ing s**t - why isn't it 3D?' was a common question about the pacman arcade machine (Their teacher were loving every minute of it though!) Scariest thing was playing 'Jack Attack' on the Commodore 64 - i had the C16 version when it came out and i realised I'd been playing the game for 16 years on-and-off, which incidentally was the age of the oldest kid I taught to play it. suddenly I felt very old, despite only being 22 myself
  18. but nothing beats a few beers and a 4-player game of warlords among friends...
  19. mine was an unboxed (but in good condition) heavy-6 with paddles, joystick, power supply and 5 games and I paid £50 for it. Luckily I got my jag through BIN for £35 with 4 games (including T2K) and my 800XL+diskdrive and a box of software at a computer club meeting fot 10. UK atari prices really are mental compared to the US.
  20. Wow, that's pretty close. Suggestion: The accompaniment voice is not so vibrato on the 64, rather it flips between 2 pitches very quickly (I isolated each voice using SidPlay, then slowed them down to hear the actual effect used). I'm just learning how to use RMT, so I don't have the sound figured out yet. -Bry True - but the SID doesn't go wildly out of tune like the pokey has a tendancy to do, so a bit of adaptation was needed
  21. well for what it's worth I got bored today and started messing with RMT and this is my first attempt at the ingame music based on the C64 version. commando.zip
  22. those are some damn nice sounding .rmt files
  23. well I took the idea of the replacement working as a 5200 joystick, so if you look at my designs each stick is a hybrid made from a 5200 keypad and whatever the adapter in question allows you to use. did I succeed? god knows...
  24. I actually enjoyed watching this, mostly because I'm an immature-prick-who-happens-to-know-6502 so would've embraced that kind of environment. I got a sense that these people were having fun what they did and that fun spilled over into what went out the door for us to play. It was a window into the games business you fell in love with and wanted to work in as opposed to the one that exists right now that I'm currently banging my head against a brick wall to get into. maybe it's better appreciated if seen through the eyes of a developer wannabe instead of a gamesplayer...
  25. I agree that the music is pretty basic, but it's also pretty basic in the arcade version (the 64 music was jazzed up quite a bit). I guess that's what happens when you don't have Rob Hubbard around. -Bry Has anyone thought of the possibility of hacking the RMT player into there in place of whatever music driver it currently uses? If that can be done then getting a conversion of the Hubbard version of the music together is no major problem
