I wish I was a better informed kid in the late 80's, early 90's, that way I could have supported Atari over Nintendo. Oh well, guess I hopped on the bandwagon like everyone else..

  Don't beat yourself up over this... I played Atari and only Atari throughout the 80's, and I still prefer Atari games to NES ones. Having said that, Nintendo was at the top of their game during the late 80's/early 90's and Atari was sadly running on fumes. Atari's awful decisions pre-Tramiel had already sealed it's fate.
